[1. CONVENE]

IN THE EVENT OF A MURDER, AN EMERGENCY.
IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, THE EXIT IS THE SAME DOOR THAT YOU CAME IN.
IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF THE RESTROOMS, THEY'RE OUT THE DOOR AND UP THE STAIRS.
I FEEL LIKE A FLIGHT ATTENDANT.
I'M HOPING NO OXYGEN MASKS WILL BE DROPPING FROM THE CEILING DURING OUR MEETING.
SO ANYWAY, WITH THAT, WE'LL MOVE ON.
AND IF YOU'D PLEASE JOIN ME IN A SALUTE TO THE FLAG, WHICH IS IN THE BACK OF THE ROOM.
I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.
NEXT, WE HAVE THE LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND GABBY.
THANK YOU. SO NEXT ON OUR AGENDA IS THE ACTUAL ADOPTING OF THE AGENDA.
[2. ADOPTION OF AGENDA [GC-4.7]]
AND SO AT THIS POINT, THE CHAIR WILL EITHER ENTERTAIN CHANGES TO THE AGENDA AND OR A MOTION TO ADOPT SUCH.SO, I REQUEST THAT WE PULL THE SUPERINTENDENT CONTRACT FOR DISCUSSION.
OKAY. ANY OTHER REQUESTS FOR CHANGES TO THE AGENDA? OKAY HEARING NONE, THEN I WILL GO AHEAD AND CALL FOR A VOTE ON ADOPTING THE AGENDA AS PRESENTED WITH THE ONE CHANGE OF PULLING THE SUPERINTENDENT'S CONTRACT FROM THE CONSENT AGENDA TO DISCUSS AND VOTE ON SEPARATELY.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
AYE. ALL OPPOSED? SO, THE REVISED AGENDA IS THEN ADOPTED.
SO THAT BRINGS US ON TO ITEM 4.01, WHICH IS ALWAYS AN EXCITING TIME.
[4. SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS]
AND FOR THAT WE WILL WE ARE GOING TO BE SWEARING IN OUR NEWEST BOARD MEMBER.AND SO, HARLENE, IF YOU WOULD JOIN ME.
OKAY? WHERE? WHERE DO YOU WANT US? OKAY, SO IF YOU'LL RAISE YOUR RIGHT HAND AND REPEAT AFTER ME.
HARLENE MOLLY. DO SOLEMNLY SWEAR.
THAT I WILL SUPPORT THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES.
THAT I WILL SUPPORT THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES.
THE CONSTITUTION AND LAWS OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON.
THE CONSTITUTION AND STATE LAWS OF WASHINGTON STATE.
AND THE POLICIES OF FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
AND THE POLICIES OF FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
DURING MY TERM, I WILL FAITHFULLY.
I WILL FAITHFULLY AND IMPARTIALLY AND IMPARTIALLY DISCHARGE THE RESPONSIBILITIES.
CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME TO THE BOARD.
THANK YOU. AND NOW YOU COME SIT WITH US.
[00:05:12]
IT'S ON. IT'S LIVE.IT'S GOOD TO HAVE YOU ON THE BOARD.
NEXT ON THE AGENDA TONIGHT IS THE RECOGNITION OF THE 2024 BUSINESSES OF THE YEAR.
AND FOR THAT, I WILL TURN IT OVER TO KRISTI.
I AM VERY HONORED TO GET TO RECOGNIZE TWO AMAZING BUSINESSES THIS EVENING.
WE HAVE SUPERFEET AND FERNDALE LAUNDRY.
DO YOU WANT TO COME HELP ME? SO, IF I CAN HAVE THEM BOTH COME ON UP HERE.
THIS WAS ACTUALLY A VERY EASY DECISION.
AND WE JUST WANT TO THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO IN SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS, WHEN IT CAME DOWN TO WHO WE WANTED TO REACH OUT TO AND WHO WE WANTED TO CENTER, AND WE JUST SAID, WHO'S DOING SOME REALLY AMAZING THINGS FOR OUR KIDS.
AND YOU BOTH CAME UP FOR ALL YOUR WORK WITH OUR COMMUNITY TRANSITIONS PROGRAM.
AND I UNDERSTAND AND I BELIEVE WE HAVE; DO WE HAVE A PHOTO? OH, YEAH, WE'RE WORKING ON GETTING IT.
WE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WERE GIVEN A NICE SURPRISE BY THE STUDENTS.
WE'VE TOLD THEM THEY CAN BE OFF.
AND SO, I'M GOING TO FIRST START OFF WITH THANKING FERNDALE LANDRY FOR OPENING YOUR BUSINESS ON A REGULAR BASIS TO MAKING OPPORTUNITIES POSSIBLE FOR OUR STUDENTS.
YOU'VE DONE MORE THAN YOU CAN KNOW.
ONE PIECE. WAS THE BOARD APPROVED NOT LONG AGO, ABOUT A YEAR AGO, THAT WE SAID THAT WE WERE GOING TO BE ABLE TO PURCHASE THE AMERICAN LEGION BUILDING AND HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE A SPACE.
AND IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART.
I DON'T KNOW ABOUT MANY PEOPLE WANTING TO GO BACK TO HIGH SCHOOL AFTER THEY GRADUATE, AND THE BOARD ALLOWED US THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE A SPACE FOR OUR CCT PROGRAM, AND THEN YOUR AMAZING OPPORTUNITIES AND DONATION HAVE MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR THEM TO TURN THE SPACE INTO A HOME.
AND SO, THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH FOR YOUR ONGOING COMMITMENT TO OUR KIDS.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
AND WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A PHOTO.
I KNOW THERE'S PLENTY OF BUSINESSES EVEN BEYOND THE FERNDALE LAUNDRY AND SUPER FEED.
THEY'VE DONE A GREAT JOB AND I APPRECIATE OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS.
SO, THANK YOU. SO, WITH THAT BRINGS US ON TO ITEM 5.0, WHICH IS TO RECEIVE PUBLIC COMMENT.
[5. PUBLIC COMMENT [GC-3.3]]
EXCUSE ME. PUBLIC COMMENT IS A TIME WHEN THE BOARD IS ABLE TO HEAR FROM THE COMMUNITY WHAT IS ON THEIR MIND AND IMPORTANT TO THEM.IT'S NOT A TIME OF DISCUSSION, IT'S A TIME FOR THE BOARD TO LISTEN.
BOARD MEMBERS MAY INTERJECT TO ASK CLARIFYING QUESTIONS AND OR MAY AND OR MAY DIRECT SOMEONE, MOST OFTEN THE SUPERINTENDENT, TO TAKE FUTURE ACTION RELATED TO THE STATEMENTS. BUT AGAIN, IT IS NOT A TIME FOR DISCUSSION.
[00:10:01]
OUR SILENCE IS NOT A SIGNAL OF AGREEMENT OR DISAGREEMENT BUT IS MEANT TO RESPECTFULLY HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY.PLEASE NOTE THAT PUBLIC COMMENT IS NOT THE ONLY WAY TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE BOARD.
OUR CONTACT INFORMATION IS READILY AVAILABLE ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE.
ANY SPEAKER WHOSE COMMENTS EXCEED THE THREE-MINUTE LIMIT MAY SUBMIT THEIR ENTIRE OR REMAINING COMMENTS IN WRITING, TO ENSURE THAT THE BOARD HAS ADEQUATE TIME TO ADDRESS ALL OF THE ITEMS ON OUR AGENDA.
PUBLIC COMMENT IS LIMITED TO A TOTAL OF 45 MINUTES.
SO, THE FIRST PERSON I HAVE SIGNED UP FOR PUBLIC COMMENT TONIGHT IS PATRICE VALENTINE.
THERE WE GO. BETTER? YES. ALL RIGHT.
I DID ALSO SEND THIS IN AN EMAIL, SO I'M JUST REALLY COVERING MY BASES HERE.
BUT I SENT AN EMAIL AND SAID SOME OF THE INFORMATION THAT WAS IN THAT BOOK, BUT WHAT THE WHAT I WANTED TO DO TODAY WAS JUST REALLY PUT ON KIND OF AN OUT THERE IN THE PUBLIC IS THAT YOU DO HAVE COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR CHANGING THE CELL PHONE POLICY.
I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT IS IN THE HIGH SCHOOL RIGHT NOW, BUT I DO KNOW WHAT I HEAR FROM MY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF WHAT IS GOING ON WITH CELL PHONES, AND IT IS RAMPANT USE IN THE BATHROOMS. IT IS CHEATING ON TESTS.
SO, FOR WHAT? WHAT I WANT TO PUT OUT THERE AS FAR AS THE PUBLIC GOES IS YOU HAVE COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND CHANGING THIS POLICY.
AND IN ONE EXAMPLE, SOME OF THE SCHOOLS DOWN IN THE SEATTLE SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND THERE ARE SOME NOW IN LA COUNTY THAT IS ALSO PUT OUT THEIR PLAN FOR WHAT THEY'RE GOING TO DO WITH CELL PHONES AND THEY'RE DOING THOSE LOCKED BAGS.
I THINK YOU ALL HAVE SEEN THOSE.
AND IN LIMITING THEIR CELL PHONE USE AT SCHOOLS, I UNDERSTAND IT'S GOING TO BE INCREDIBLY HARD TO MAKE THIS CHANGE, PARTICULARLY FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS. NO KID WANTS TO GIVE UP THEIR CELL PHONE RIGHT NOW.
I KNOW WHEN I HAVE TO PUNISH MY CHILDREN.
THE CELL PHONE IS THE FIRST THING TO GO AND THAT THAT'S THEIR LANGUAGE, RIGHT? SO, FOR THEM, IT'S GOING TO FEEL LIKE A PUNISHMENT.
BUT I THINK AS ADULTS, IT'S OUR OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW THEM THAT IT ISN'T A PUNISHMENT.
IT'S ACTUALLY AN INVESTMENT IN THEIR FUTURE TO TAKE THOSE THINGS AWAY FROM THEM AND ALLOW THEM TO GET AN EDUCATION AND ALLOW THEM TO FEEL THAT SENSE OF BELONGING THAT FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT SO VEHEMENTLY PUTS OUT THERE.
SO, ALL I'M DOING TODAY IS JUST LITERALLY GIVING YOU MY VOTE OF SUPPORT AS A COMMUNITY MEMBER AND VOWING TO YOU THAT IF THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD DECIDES TO TAKE ON, THAT YOU WILL HAVE MY WHOLEHEARTED SUPPORT AND I'M QUITE VOCAL WHEN NEED BE.
GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS DON PHAM.
I IDENTIFY MYSELF AS A FERNDALE RESIDENT ON BARD ROAD.
THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION EARLIER THIS YEAR SET A PRECEDENT WHEN THREE OF THE SIX VOTER INITIATIVES WERE PASSED BY THE STATE LAWMAKERS, AND INITIATIVE 2081, ALSO KNOWN AS THE PARENTS BILL OF RIGHTS, WAS ONE OF THEM.
HOWEVER, ONE DAY BEFORE THE INITIATIVE BECAME LAW, ON JUNE 6TH, STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION CHRIS RADEL ISSUED A NEWS RELEASE TELLING SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO IGNORE IT.
[00:15:06]
APPARENTLY, RADER BELIEVES THAT HE IS AUTHORIZED TO DECIDE WHAT IS CONSIDERED LAW AND WHETHER TO FOLLOW IT.FOR EXAMPLE, HE CHOSE TO ENFORCE THE UNCONSTITUTIONAL MASK EDICT BY THE GOVERNOR IN THE FIRST TWO YEARS OF COVID BUT REFUSED TO OBEY THIS NEW LAW SIMPLY BECAUSE HE DISAGREED WITH IT.
EDUCATION CENTER DIRECTOR AT THE WASHINGTON POLICY CENTER.
LIVE, LIVE! FINN SAID IT BEST IN HER STATEMENT.
SUPERINTENDENT RADER HAS CROWNED HIMSELF SUPREME RULER OF EDUCATION POLICY IN WASHINGTON STATE, ABOVE THE PEOPLE, THE LEGISLATURE AND NOW THE COURTS.
RADER CLAIMED THAT BECAUSE OF CONFLICTS BETWEEN THE NEW LAW AND PROTECTIONS PROVIDED IN FEDERAL PRIVACY LAW SUCH AS HIPAA, CERTAIN INFORMATION, QUOTE, CANNOT BE DISCLOSED WITHOUT THE STUDENT'S CONSENT, UNQUOTE.
THE CRITICAL QUESTION IS WHAT ABOUT THE PARENTS' CONSENT TO THE GENDER TRANSITION TREATMENTS FOR THEIR CHILDREN? HE ALSO STATED, IF A STUDENT DOES NOT FEEL SAFE COMING OUT TO THEIR FAMILY AND TURN TO A TRUSTED ADULT AT THEIR SCHOOL FOR SUPPORT, THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO RECEIVE THAT SUPPORT WITHOUT FEAR OF BEING OUTED BY THEIR SCHOOL.
IT IS THESE REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO TRAMPLE ON PARENTAL RIGHTS AND TO DRIVE A WEDGE BETWEEN PARENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN THAT GAVE RISE TO THE INITIATIVE 2081, AS WELL AS THE PARENTAL RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE.
IN CLOSING, I'M GOING TO LEAVE YOU WITH THIS QUOTE FROM WASHINGTON GOP CHAIR JIM WALSH.
THE DISTRICTS WILL BE THE ONES SUED AND HELD LIABLE IF THEY FOLLOW HIS DUMB ADVICE.
WASHINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICTS IGNORE CHRIS RADER.
DOM. SO THAT IS ALL THE FOLKS THAT I HAVE ON THE LIST FOR TONIGHT.
AGAIN, JUST BECAUSE PUBLIC COMMENT IS CONCLUDED DOESN'T MEAN THAT OUR EARS ARE CLOSED.
WE CERTAINLY APPRECIATE HEARING FROM PEOPLE.
[6. SHARING [GC-7.E.]]
AND FOR THAT I WILL TURN IT OVER TO KRISTI.SINCE I SAW YOU THE LAST TIME SCHOOL HAS RELEASED FOR SUMMER.
AND SO I WANT TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT THE END OF THE YEAR LOOKED LIKE.
AND SO THERE WAS REALLY SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.
AND IT WAS JUST AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT, YOU KNOW, GRADUATION, WE OFTEN TALK ABOUT IT BEING THE SENIOR YEAR, BUT IT'S A CULMINATION OF 13 YEARS OF AN INVESTMENT THAT A CHILD AND THEIR FAMILY HAS MADE.
WE, ALSO THIS LAST WEEK, WE HAD OUR FINAL BOND OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE MEETING.
STEVE WAS THERE, AND IT WAS A WONDERFUL CELEBRATION.
THAT IS AS I SHARED THAT NIGHT, I'VE BEEN ON SEVERAL I COUNTED THAT NIGHT.
PRIOR TO FERNDALE, I HAD BEEN ON EIGHT BOND PROJECTS, AND IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT I HAD EVER BEEN PART OF ANYTHING LIKE THE BOND OVERSIGHT, AND I FELT A LITTLE BIT LIKE A GUEST, BECAUSE I CAME IN AT THE END AND GOT TO BE PART OF THE OPENING OF THE SCHOOL, BUT I DIDN'T GET TO BE PART OF A LOT OF THE OTHER PIECES. BUT JUST TO WATCH HOW THIS TEAM WORKED TOGETHER.
AND WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT SCHOOLS BEING A HUB OF A COMMUNITY, THIS BOND OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE REALLY.
[00:20:01]
PHENOMENAL. SO I JUST I CAN'T THANK THAT TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS ENOUGH.AND THEN THOSE WHO SUGGESTED HAVING THIS COMMITTEE MEETING, I DON'T THINK WE'VE HEARD YET, BUT I KNOW WE'VE APPLIED TO SPEAK AT WASEDA BECAUSE I THINK WE HAVE SOMETHING TO SHARE WITH THE REST OF THE STATE.
IT'S THE TECHNICAL PART OF THE DAY, GOING ON AND ON AND THEN GRADUATION.
I DIDN'T GET AN ACTUAL TIME, AND YOU KNOW, THE BOARD, YOU ALL GOT TO BE PART OF THIS AS WELL.
BUT HAVING THE GRADUATION IN OUR OWN STADIUM JUST FELT SPECIAL.
AND AS I WAS TALKING TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE, EVERYONE, THE STAFF AND STUDENTS SHARED THAT ALIKE, THAT IT JUST FELT REALLY GOOD TO BE IN OUR OWN HOME CELEBRATING OUR STUDENTS.
THE WEATHER COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE PERFECT.
AND SO, IT WAS JUST A TREMENDOUS CELEBRATION, NOT ONLY FOR OUR STUDENTS, BUT FOR THEIR FAMILIES.
AND, YOU KNOW, NO STUDENT GRADUATES ALONE.
THEY'RE PART OF A TEAM WHEN THEY GO THROUGH THAT.
AND SO, TO BE ABLE TO HOST THAT.
AND THEN TO HAVE THEM ON SITE FOR IT AND THEN I KNOW SOME OF OUR SENIORS WENT TO AN OVERNIGHT.
I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY DID IT. I FELL ASLEEP DURING MY SENIOR PARTY, SO I VERY HATS OFF TO THEM.
AMAZING. ONE THING I WANT TO LET YOU KNOW IS WE TRIED THIS LAST YEAR, AND WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING IT AGAIN THIS YEAR THAT THE DISTRICT OFFICE, WE, YOU KNOW, WE'RE A YEAR-ROUND BUSINESS.
AND SO, BUT WE WILL BE CLOSED ON FRIDAYS DURING THE MONTH OF JULY.
IT ALLOWS OUR STAFF WHO WANT TO TAKE A DAY OFF.
THEY CAN DO THAT WITHOUT US NEEDING TO HIRE A SUB.
IT ALSO PROVIDES THOSE WHO WORK ON FRIDAYS THE OPPORTUNITY TO JUST HAVE UNINTERRUPTED TIME.
OUR SCHOOL BUILDINGS ARE CLOSED FOR THE SUMMER, AND THERE'S LOTS OF ACTIVITY.
JAMIE AND HIS TEAM ARE BUSY, BUSY, BUSY IN OUR BUILDINGS.
JAMIE GOING AFTER OKAY. SO, I'M GOING TO SWITCH.
AND THEN ONE THING WE ARE GOING TO DO TONIGHT IS JAMIE'S HERE TONIGHT.
WE'RE GOING TO GIVE A FACILITIES UPDATE.
SO, I'M GOING TO INVITE HIM TO COME TO THE TABLE NOW.
BUT IN THE MEANTIME, I'M GOING TO TURN THIS OVER TO OUR STUDENTS TO GIVE THEIR UPDATES.
OKAY, SO FOR MY UPDATE FINISHED MY JUNIOR YEAR, WHICH IS A LITTLE BIT CRAZY.
I GOT TO WORK GRADUATION AS AN USHER WITH THE REST OF THE NEWLY ELECTED SENIOR CLASS ASB, AND IT WAS REALLY EXCITING TO SEE PEOPLE I'VE KNOWN SINCE LIKE FIRST GRADE, THIRD GRADE WHO'VE BEEN WITH ME, LIKE THROUGH MY ENTIRE JOURNEY AND LEADERSHIP AND ON THE BOARD, LIKE MALLORY AND KWABENA GRADUATE.
AND HERE ARE SO MANY OF THE LIKE, HEART TOUCHING, INSPIRATIONAL SPEECHES THAT THEY GAVE.
IT WAS A REALLY COOL EXPERIENCE AND IT'S ACTUALLY THE FIRST GRADUATION I'VE EVER BEEN TO.
AND SO, I THOUGHT THAT WAS REALLY COOL TO SEE.
AND I LOVED IT. HAVING IT LIKE IN OUR HOME STADIUM.
IT'S EXCITING THAT SCHOOL'S OUT FOR THE SUMMER.
BUT THERE ARE LOTS OF SUMMER SPORTS STILL GOING.
SUMMER SEASONS, SPRING SEASON VOLLEYBALL'S BEEN TO A COUPLE ROUND ROBIN SCRIMMAGES.
WE'RE DOING LIKE, LIFTS AND OPEN GYMS. AND I KNOW FOOTBALL ACTUALLY HAD A SCRIMMAGE YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW AT SQUALICUM WITH LIKE SIX TEAMS. SO, I'M ASSUMING KIND OF ROUND ROBIN STYLE.
SO, THE STUDENT ATHLETES ARE STILL PRETTY ACTIVE IN THOSE PROGRAMS. IT'S NICE TO HAVE THAT AS LIKE A SUMMER OUTLET TO GET YOU OUT OF BED AND INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE.
ALL RIGHT. AS FOR ME, THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL.
OR I WAS WORKING ON FITZ, WHICH WAS OUR FUN IN THE SUN.
LAST DAY OF SCHOOL, FIELD DAY AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
I WAS WORKING ON IT SINCE SPRING BREAK.
WITH A SENIOR WHO'S NOW GRADUATED, KYLER BOWEN.
[00:25:07]
AND SO MANY STUDENTS JUST FOUND WHAT THEY WANTED TO DO OUTSIDE, SO IT WAS REALLY FUN.I MEAN, IT WAS JUST SOMETHING SPECIAL BEING IN OUR OWN STADIUM AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
SUMMER, LIKE GABBY MENTIONED, WE HAVE SO MANY SPORTS GOING ON.
I'M DOING THIS TENNIS CAMP IN BELLINGHAM.
THAT'S GOING TO BE REALLY AWESOME.
BUT YEAH, I THINK THAT'S REALLY ALL FOR MY OWN UPDATE.
SELENA AND I TOOK HARLEEN AND GABBY OUT TO LUNCH YESTERDAY TO CELEBRATE A LITTLE BIT AHEAD OF TIME.
WE TALKED ABOUT A QUARTERLY UPDATE.
AND IN ORDER TO DO THE UPDATES TO CREATE A DOCUMENT, WE ACTUALLY NEED SOME BASELINE.
AND SO, I'VE INVITED JAMIE TONIGHT, AND I KNOW THAT STEVE'S BEEN PART OF THIS PROCESS, BUT WE'RE DOING A DEEP DIVE INTO WHAT WE KNOW IS THE CURRENT REALITY.
AND THEN FROM THERE WE'RE GOING TO BUILD OUT.
SO, I'M GOING TO PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY HERE FOR JAMIE TO SHARE.
IT'S THE SECOND MOST SCINTILLATING TOPIC OF THE NIGHT, BEHIND THE BUDGET, I'M SURE.
SO, I KNOW WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR OUR FACILITY.
CAPITALS FACILITY RENEWAL PLAN OR OUR ASSESSMENT OF OUR CURRENT FACILITIES.
I'M JUST GOING TO GIVE A RUNDOWN OF KIND OF WHERE WE'RE AT WITH THAT PROCESS.
I MET WITH STEVE ON, I THINK IT WAS JUNE 12TH TO GIVE HIM A PREVIEW OF THIS.
THIS IS SOMETHING THAT'S BEEN GOING ON IN THE BACKGROUND FOR QUITE SOME TIME.
WE, LIKE MARK HAD SAID, WE WENT THROUGH A TRANSITION WHERE WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON THIS WITH CSG FOR QUITE SOME TIME. THE GUY THAT WAS PRETTY PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS AT CSG RETIRED.
DYKEMAN HAS TAKEN OVER A LOT OF THE WORK BEHIND THE SCENES.
BASICALLY, WHAT WE HAD DONE IS WE HAD CONSULTANTS, PROFESSIONALS, AND A LOT OF DIFFERENT FIELDS COME IN AND EVALUATE OUR FACILITIES. SO, FROM ENVELOPE, FROM ELECTRICAL, FROM PLUMBING, FROM CIVIL.
DID I SAY PLUMBING? SO, LOT HVAC, SO A LOT OF DIFFERENT FIELDS.
THEY CAME AND GAVE US THEIR PERSPECTIVE ON THE LIFE CYCLE OF THINGS THAT WE HAVE IN OUR BUILDINGS, REPLACEMENT CYCLES AND PLANS.
AND THEIR FIRST RUN AT IT WAS THIS EXCEL SHEET THAT JACOB FROM DYKEMAN PUT TOGETHER THAT WE FEEL LIKE, NEEDS SOME TWEAKING TO MAKE IT A REALISTIC PLAN AND DOCUMENT THAT WE CAN LOOK AT MOVING FORWARD AND STARTING WITH THE FACT THAT FOR SOME REASON, WE STARTED IN 2022.
SO, THIS FIRST PAGE IS JUST A SUMMARY OF EXPENDITURES THAT THEY BELIEVE WE NEED TO SPEND ON OUR FACILITIES TO KEEP THEM UPDATED AND IN GOOD CONDITION.
SO, IT WAS A LITTLE OVERWHELMING WHEN YOU FIRST LOOK AT THIS TO REALIZE WE'RE IN 2024.
AND ON THIS WE'RE $43 MILLION BEHIND ALREADY.
SO, IT'S NOT A REALISTIC GOAL FOR US TO COME UP WITH $43 MILLION IN OUR BUDGET YEAR.
SO, MARK, MYSELF, JACOB AND KEN MET ORIGINALLY TO GO THROUGH THIS FORMAT AND TALK ABOUT SOME TWEAKS WE COULD MAKE TO MAKE THIS A REAL, LIKE I SAID, A REALISTIC DOCUMENT THAT WE CAN USE MOVING FORWARD.
SO, THE FIRST THING WE DID WAS THE NEXT VERSION OF THIS THAT YOU WILL SEE WE'LL START IN 2025, BECAUSE WE'VE ALREADY HAD MADE OUR BUDGET FOR 24 AND 25.
THE SECOND THING THAT WE REALIZED AS WE STARTED LOOKING AT THESE THINGS, YOU CAN SEE AND I'LL SHOW YOU AN EXAMPLE FROM VISTA IN 2023, YOU CAN SEE THERE'S $11 MILLION OF WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE.
AND WHAT HAPPENED WAS THEY ARE GOING STRICTLY BY A LIFE CYCLE PLAN.
WHAT WE MET WITH MYSELF, KEN AND JACOB WERE, WE DECIDED TO GO THROUGH THIS AND SEPARATE IT OUT INTO
[00:30:10]
THINGS THAT WE CAN DO IN OUR YEARLY BUDGET, FOR THE MOST PART.SO, IT WOULD BE YOU KNOW, MAYBE ROOFING, MAYBE A PARKING LOT, SOME THINGS THAT WE CAN SEPARATE OUT AND THEN PUT OTHER THINGS THAT ARE REALLY PROJECTS THAT WOULD NOT BE DONE UNLESS THEY'RE INVASIVE, UNLESS YOU WERE DOING A REMODEL OF THE BUILDING.
SO, IT MADE SENSE TO SEPARATE THOSE THINGS OUT.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN YOU SEE IT NEXT TIME IS WE'LL HAVE THIS PART AT THE TOP, WHICH WE'RE HOPING TO BE A YEARLY PLAN FOR MAINTENANCE AND THE BUDGET MONEY WE NEED.
THAT WILL HOPEFULLY BE PRETTY CONSISTENT YEAR TO YEAR, DOLLAR WISE.
AND SO, IT'LL BE REALISTIC TO KEEP UP WITH THOSE THINGS.
AND THEN DOWN BELOW, WE'LL HAVE THE MORE INVASIVE PROJECTS THAT WOULD REALLY BE PART OF A REMODEL OR A BIGGER PROJECT AT A SCHOOL.
AND IT ALSO MIGHT DICTATE TO US WHEN WE NEED TO GO OUT FOR A CAPITAL PROJECTS BOND OR A BOND TO DEPENDING ON COSTS.
SO, I'M GOING TO GO TO VISTA SO YOU CAN SEE.
WHOOPS. WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT IN THE GENERAL.
AND THEN YOU CAN SEE THERE'S A TAB FOR EACH SCHOOL AT THE BOTTOM.
THIS BREAKS DOWN THE WORK THAT THEY BELIEVE WE NEED TO DO SPREAD OUT OVER THE NEXT ROUGHLY 20 YEARS.
AND THE FIRST BIG ONES, I'LL JUST HIGHLIGHT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM UPGRADE WAS ALMOST $1 MILLION.
AND AGAIN, THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN WITHOUT DOING A MAJOR REMODEL WITH, YOU KNOW, GETTING INTO WALLS AND ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU'D HAVE TO DO IT MADE SENSE FOR SOMETHING LIKE THAT TO BE PART OF A RENOVATION.
THEN THE NEXT, THIS 2023 YEAR.
LOOKS LIKE IT GOT HIDDEN, BUT THAT WAS OR.
MODERNIZATION, RENEWAL AND REPLACEMENT OF THE DISTRICT.
MECHANICAL SYSTEMS SUCH AS PIPING SYSTEMS. AGAIN, YOU'RE GOING IN CEILINGS.
OUR COOLING TOWERS AND HEATING AND VENTILATION SYSTEMS. SO AGAIN, VERY INVASIVE PROJECT THAT YOU'RE GOING TO CAUSE A LOT OF OTHER WORK THAT WOULD HAVE TO BE DONE TO RESTORE THE SCHOOL BACK TO WHERE WE COULD USE IT, SO THAT THAT WOULD BE PULLED FROM THAT AND THEN BROUGHT DOWN BELOW TO A PROJECT THAT WE WOULD DO AS PART OF A MODERNIZATION OR RENOVATION.
BUT THIS JUST KIND OF SHOWS ALL THE DIFFERENT ELEMENTS THAT THEY WERE EVALUATING.
SO, YOU CAN SEE IT JUST BREAKS IT DOWN INTO THE NITTY GRITTY.
WE CAN SHARE THIS ONCE WE GET THE FINALIZED PLAN FIGURED OUT.
ANY OF YOU CAN TAKE A LOOK AT IT AND DIVE AS DEEP AS YOU WANT INTO HOW THESE COSTS WERE FIGURED OUT AND, AND THE LIFE CYCLES OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT REPLACING.
STEVE. AM I LEAVING ANYTHING OUT FROM OUR CONVERSATION? NO. I THINK YOU'VE DONE A GREAT JOB.
MY COMMENT WOULD BE JUST TO REITERATE.
SO JUST TO GIVE SOME UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE.
AND THAT LIFESPAN, FOR EXAMPLE, COULD BE LIKE A HOT WATER HEATER.
IT'S GOING TO LAST TEN YEARS AND THEN IT'S GOING TO FAIL.
SO, THESE PROJECTED NUMBERS UNDERSTAND THAT THESE ARE PROJECTED FAILURE RATES, BUT THAT DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN IT'S GOING TO FAIL. AND SO, YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THIS FROM A PERSPECTIVE THAT YEAH.
[00:35:07]
MAYBE THEY'RE SAYING THAT THE LIFE CYCLE IS, YOU KNOW, THIS, BUT IT COULD POSSIBLY, DEPENDING ON HOW YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR FACILITY, COULD LAST MUCH LONGER THAN THAT. SO, YOU KNOW, IT'S HARD TO PUT A NUMBER ON THIS WHEN IT'S A PROJECTED NUMBER.SO, I JUST WANT TO MAKE CLARIFICATION THAT SOME OF THE BIG NUMBERS THERE.
BUT IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN THAT, YOU KNOW, THAT'S A TRUE NUMBER WE'RE WORKING WITH.
IT DEPENDS ON HOW WE, YOU KNOW, MAINTAIN OUR FACILITY AND.
YEAH. SO, I JUST WANT TO MAKE THAT CLARIFICATION FOR YOU.
QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? WE'RE HOPING TO HAVE THIS FINISHED BY NEXT MONTH.
AND SO, IT'LL JUST BE VERY CLEAR, LIKE, THIS IS NOW TIME TO GO CHECK ON THIS.
SO, IT'S LIKE A LESSON PLAN ON HOW TO TAKE CARE OF OUR FACILITIES.
WHAT I APPRECIATE ABOUT IT IS IT ALLOWS US TO BECOME MORE PROACTIVE INSTEAD OF REACTING AND WAITING.
THIS ALSO, YOU KNOW, YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THE BUDGET FOR NEXT YEAR.
WE'RE ALREADY LOOKING AT PLANNING FOR THE BUDGET FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR.
SO, I JUST I REALLY DO APPRECIATE IT.
AND, STEVE, THANK YOU FOR PROVIDING YOUR EXPERTISE IN THIS PROCESS AS WE'RE DEVELOPING THE SYSTEM.
SO, YOU KNOW, JAMIE'S ABLE TO SAY, THIS IS HOW MANY HOURS WE SPENT.
THESE ARE THE PROJECTS WE'LL BE LOOKING AT DOING IN THE NEXT QUARTER.
AND SO, HIS TEAM'S BEEN AMAZING AND IN GOING IN THIS ROUTE.
SO, WE HAD OUR MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE GET BOUGHT OUT.
AS WE'RE LOOKING AT TRANSITIONING HERE.
SO, WE WENT THROUGH THREE DEMOS OF OTHER MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE.
THE WEEK BEFORE LAST WITH SEVERAL PEOPLE.
WE'RE ALSO TRYING TO INTEGRATE FACILITY SCHEDULING.
SO, FOR RIGHT NOW, EACH SCHOOL DOES ITS OWN FACILITY SCHEDULING.
WE SOMETIMES HAVE THINGS THAT WE'RE UNAWARE OF THAT ARE HAPPENING AT OUR SCHOOLS.
SO, WE WANT TO GET AS PART OF THIS TWO OF THE ONES WE LOOKED AT ALSO HAVE A FACILITY MODULE ON IT THAT WE CAN GET SOMETHING SO WE CAN GET OUR FACILITY RENTALS ON OUR WEB PAGE.
WE CAN GET IT OUT TO THE PUBLIC.
SO, WE KNOW ACROSS A DISTRICT WHAT'S GOING ON A DAILY BASIS? THEY WILL EVEN TALK TO OUR MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE.
SO, THEY WILL CREATE A WORK ORDER BASED ON WHO'S RENTING THE FACILITY AND WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE SO THAT IT AUTOMATICALLY GENERATES SOMETHING THAT CAN GO TO THE CUSTODIANS THAT SAY, HERE'S HOW THIS ROOM NEEDS TO BE SET UP FOR THIS RENTAL.
SO, THERE'S SOME PRETTY COOL THINGS THAT TWO OF THE THREE THAT WE LOOKED AT HAD THAT WEREN'T JUST PART WEREN'T JUST MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE. ALSO, SOME VERY GOOD REPORTING FACETS OF IT THAT WILL HELP US AS WE TALK TO YOU GUYS.
SO, IT'S A BIG PROJECT TO PUT ALL THAT TOGETHER.
[00:40:03]
SO, I APPRECIATE THE WORK YOU GUYS ARE DOING AND THE PROACTIVE APPROACH THAT WE'RE GOING TOWARDS.SO THAT TAKES US ON TO ITEM 7.01, WHICH IS THE REVISED GOVERNANCE, CULTURE POLICY 6-E ANNUAL WORK
[7. MATTERS FOR BOARD ACTION]
PLAN. AND FOR THAT, I WILL TURN IT OVER TO KRISTI AND HER PROPOSAL.SO, YOU WILL SEE IN ON THE AGENDA THAT THERE ARE TWO PLANS.
SO, THIS IS WHAT YOU VOTE ON EVERY YEAR THAT DICTATES TO MYSELF AND MY TEAM WHAT MONITORING REPORTS YOU WILL EXPECT TO SEE AND WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON. I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO REALIZE THAT THE MONITORING REPORTS, EVEN THOUGH THIS IS WHEN YOU SEE THEM, ALL OF THESE ARE BODIES OF WORK THAT ARE HAPPENING ALL THE TIME. WE DON'T STOP DOING WORK IN ORDER TO ANSWER ONE.
BUT IT'S ALREADY CHANGING BY THE TIME YOU HAVE LOOKED AT IT.
SO, THE DIFFERENCE WITH THESE OPTION A AND OPTION B ONE PIECE THAT CAME UP LAST YEAR THAT WE SHIFTED TOWARDS WAS THE VERY BIG REPORT WHERE WE TALK ABOUT ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH AND SCIENCE.
WE ALSO HAD SOCIAL STUDIES IN THAT REPORT LAST YEAR.
IT'S NOT PART OF A STATE ASSESSMENT.
SO, IT KIND OF FELT LIKE AN ADD ON.
AND ONE OF THE EXECUTIVE TEAM HAD MADE THE RECOMMENDATION THAT WE MOVE SOCIAL STUDIES TO LET ME LOOK AT THE REPORT THAT YOU WOULD FIND SOCIAL STUDIES IN A DIFFERENT LOCATION.
WE WOULD WE WOULD PULL IT OUT OF THERE.
AND SO WHAT WE ARE PROPOSING IS THAT WE WOULD PREFER OPTION B AS AN EXECUTIVE TEAM FOR YOU TO VOTE ON.
SO NEXT YEAR YOU ARE GETTING THE JUNE REPORT AND THEN IN JULY YOU'LL GET GLOBAL EXPECTATIONS.
YOU WOULD THEN GET TECHNOLOGY CAREER.
WE ALSO MOVED THE LARGE REPORT TO OCTOBER.
WHAT WE FOUND LAST YEAR IS WE GAVE IT TO YOU IN SEPTEMBER, AND IT REALLY WASN'T ENOUGH TURNAROUND FROM THE TIME THAT WE GET ALL OF THE DATA FROM THE STATE IN THE WAY THAT THEY PUT IT TOGETHER. SO, PUTTING IT IN OCTOBER GIVES US A LITTLE MORE TIME TO GO IN DEPTH.
I JUST DON'T THINK IT'S AT THE QUALITY OF REPORTING THAT THE BOARD WOULD LIKE TO SEE.
SO, WITH THAT, ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TWO? THE DIFFERENCE? IT REALLY JUST COMES DOWN TO THAT SOCIAL STUDIES PIECE.
AND ALSO, THE ACTUAL MONITORING REPORTS MAY SHIFT A BIT AFTER THE AUGUST 3RD BOARD RETREAT, BUT THIS WILL GIVE US AN INDICATOR OF WHAT WE'RE PLANNING FOR.
SO, ON THIS OPTION B, IT ALSO SAID BOARD RECOMMENDATION TO DELETE OUR 2.4 TECHNOLOGY EMBEDDED INTO THE OE11 FACILITIES.
YEAH, THE TECHNOLOGY ONE, IF YOU REMEMBER, THERE WAS THE TECHNOLOGY OF LEARNING, WHICH IS A RESULT.
AND THEN THERE WAS JUST THE INFRASTRUCTURE.
AND SO THAT WAS WHAT THAT WAS REFERRING TO.
I WAS JUST WONDERING ABOUT THE REMAINING PART, THE EDUCATIONAL PART OF IT.
WILL THAT STAY WHERE IT IS THEN, OR IS THAT GOING TO BE INCORPORATED INTO SOMETHING ELSE? BECAUSE TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION IS A THING SEPARATE FROM THE MATERIALS THAT ARE USED TO HAVE THE EDUCATION.
IT'S NOT NECESSARILY, YOU KNOW, LIKE WE DON'T IT'S SOMETHING THAT'S EMBEDDED.
SO, THE STUDENTS WE COULD AND THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE CAN TALK ABOUT THAT RETREAT.
WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IT? WHAT WOULD THE INDICATOR BE? IT'S CURRENTLY WRITTEN MORE AS A.
CURRENTLY IS WRITTEN AS AN OE.
AND SO, I THINK IT'S ONE THAT WE NEED TO LOOK AT DURING THE RETREAT.
SO, PRIOR TO THE RETREAT, YOU'LL BE ABLE TO SEE WHAT SOME OF THOSE REFRESHERS WOULD BE.
ALSO, THE EXECUTIVE TEAM AS WELL AS BOBBY WILL BE AT THE RETREAT, SO YOU'LL HAVE THE EXPERTISE.
BUT, YOU KNOW, IT'S ULTIMATELY YOUR DECISION.
[00:45:01]
WE WILL JUST BRING FORWARD SOME DIFFERENT IDEAS.SO, ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? OKAY. SEEING NO OTHER QUESTIONS IS THE CHAIR WILL ENTERTAIN A MOTION AS TO WHICH OF THESE OPTIONS WE WOULD LIKE TO ADOPT. I'LL MAKE A MOTION TO ADOPT OPTION B.
FIRST, WE'LL HAVE OUR STUDENT ADVISORY VOTE.
SO, ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
AYE. ALL OPPOSED? OKAY, SO STUDENT ADVISORY VOTE IS IN FAVOR OF THE MOTION.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
AYE. ALL OPPOSED? SO, MOTION CARRIES, AND WE HAVE ADOPTED THE REVISED OPTION B.
OKAY, THAT BRINGS US TO ITEM 7.02, WHICH IS THE SUPERINTENDENT EVALUATION.
EACH JUNE, THE BOARD WILL CONDUCT A FORMAL SUMMATIVE EVALUATION OF SUPERINTENDENT.
THIS SUMMATIVE EVALUATION WILL BE BASED UPON DATA COLLECTED AND DECISIONS MADE BY THE BOARD DURING THE YEAR, RELATED TO THE MONITORING OF RESULTS AND OPERATIONAL EXPECTATION POLICIES.
THIS POLICY IS FURTHER IS AN EXTENSION OF B/SR-4, WHICH STATES THAT THE BOARD CONSIDERS SUPERINTENDENT PERFORMANCE TO BE IDENTICAL TO DISTRICT PERFORMANCE DISTRICT ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE BOARD'S POLICY, BOARD'S RESULTS, POLICIES, AND DISTRICT OPERATIONAL OPERATION.
ATTACHED ON BOARD DOCS IS A SUMMATIVE, A SUMMARIZATION OF THE MONITORING REPORTS THAT THE BOARD HAS ACTED ON OVER THE LAST YEAR AND THE ACTIONS TAKEN, AND SHOWS THAT THE DISTRICT HAS FOUND TO BE IN COMPLIANCE ON ALL EIGHT OPERATIONAL EXPECTATION POLICIES THAT WERE REVIEWED, MAKING REASONABLE PROGRESS ON TWO OF THE THREE RESULTS POLICIES THAT WERE REVIEWED, NOT MAKING REASONABLE PROGRESS ON ONE OF THE RESULTS POLICIES REVIEWED AND ONE RESULTS POLICY MONITORING REPORT STILL PENDING ACTION AT TONIGHT'S MEETING.
WHILE IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE THE DISTRICT MAKING REASONABLE PROGRESS ON ALL RESULTS POLICIES, IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE RECOGNIZE THAT THERE IS THERE IS MORE WORK TO DO AT THIS TIME. THE CHAIR WILL OPEN THE FLOOR TO DISCUSSION ON THE SUMMARY.
SUMMARY OF OUR 20 2324 MONITORING REPORTS, WHICH ALSO REPRESENTS OUR SUPERINTENDENT'S EVALUATION.
SO, THE ONE THAT WAS QUESTIONABLE WAS THE TWO, YOU KNOW, THE SUBJECTS, THE ACADEMIC SUBJECTS.
AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW DO WE HAVE RESULTS FROM SOME OF THE IREADY TESTS AND FROM SBAC? WHAT? YOU KNOW, WHAT ARE THEY SHOWING RIGHT ABOUT NOW? BECAUSE THOSE ALSO SUPPORT THE INFORMATION FROM THESE REPORTS.
I'M GOING TO ACTUALLY ASK KELLY TO TALK ABOUT IREADY A LITTLE BIT.
BUT IN TERMS OF THE STATE TEST, THAT DATA IS STILL JUST IT'S VERY RAW DATA.
SO, HE WILL BE COMING BACK TOWARDS THE MIDDLE OF JULY.
THE STATE WILL START PUSHING OUT REPORTS FOR US.
AS WITH EVERYTHING, YOU KNOW, WE'RE MAKING SOME GAINS IN SOME AREAS.
AND I WOULD SAY WE'RE NOT GOING BACKWARDS NECESSARILY.
WE ACTUALLY, EAGLE RIDGE ELEMENTARY WAS JUST ACKNOWLEDGED BY THE STATE OSPI FOR BEING AN EXEMPLAR SCHOOL IN THE AREA OF CLOSING GAPS FOR OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS.
[00:50:02]
I THINK THE OTHER PIECE THAT I'M LOOKING AT IS I CAN WE CAN LOOK AT ENGLISH, MATH, SCIENCE, WE CAN LOOK AT ALL OF THOSE THINGS.BUT UNTIL STUDENTS FEEL CONNECTED, I THINK OUR PUBLIC COMMENT TONIGHT ABOUT THE INTERFERENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA, THE PEER GROUPS ALL OF THOSE PIECES, THOSE ARE ALL PART OF THE SCORE.
SO, THE SCORE BY ITSELF IS NOT A STANDALONE.
FERNDALE HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST, WHICH IS INTERESTING IN A LOT OF WAYS.
ONE OF THE HIGHER MCKINNEY-VENTO POPULATIONS.
SO, STUDENTS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS HERE IN WHATCOM COUNTY OUR WHEN WE LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS OUR ABSENTEEISM IS AT, WE HAVE SOME SUBGROUPS THAT HAVE A CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM OF 48%.
YOU CAN'T LEARN IF YOU'RE NOT AT SCHOOL.
AND SO, IT'S NOT, YOU KNOW, THERE'S NO SCORE THAT'S A STANDALONE.
WHAT I'VE APPRECIATED ABOUT THE BOARD IS ASKING PEGGY ABOUT THAT QUESTION.
BECAUSE THE SBAC I DIDN'T PASS, I WOULD HAVE NEVER PASSED THAT.
AND I THINK I'VE SHARED THAT BEFORE.
I'M GOING TO ASK KELLY IF SHE HAS SOME.
SURE. I CAN SHARE JUST SOME, YOU KNOW, KIND OF BRIEF DATA.
REGARDING IREADY, IF THAT'S WHAT YOU'D LIKE TO HEAR.
SO THAT IS SOMETHING THAT'S WHY KRISTI DID SHARE WITH THE GROUP HERE.
THAT'S WHY WE HAVE A DESIRE TO MOVE TO OCTOBER BECAUSE KIND OF MID-SEPTEMBER IS WHEN THOSE RESULTS ACTUALLY COME OUT OF THAT EMBARGOED STATE, WHEN WE CAN START ANALYZING THEM WITH OUR TEAMS. SO THAT'S WHY WE CAN'T REALLY TOUCH BASE ON THAT.
BUT WE STARTED THE YEAR WITH 15% OF OUR STUDENTS IN THE AREA OF READING THAT WERE MID OR ABOVE GRADE LEVEL, AND WE FINISHED THE YEAR WITH 32%. WE STARTED THE YEAR WITH 16% OF OUR STUDENTS THAT WERE EARLIER ON GRADE LEVEL, AND WE FINISHED WITH 22%.
THAT HAS BEEN AN ONGOING GOAL FOR US AS A DISTRICT.
AND SO, WE ARE SEEING THAT INCREASE AS WELL.
SO THAT'S AN AREA THAT WE'RE CONTINUING TO FOCUS.
THANK YOU KELLY. I THINK THE OTHER THING THAT WE NEED TO REMEMBER FROM THAT AND NOT TO NEGATE, YOU KNOW, WE'RE ALL LOOKING TO SEE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IMPROVE.
BUT THE WAY THAT INDICATOR WAS WRITTEN, IT WAS PRETTY HARD TO, QUOTE UNQUOTE, MAKE REASONABLE PROGRESS, BECAUSE IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, IT SAID ALL STUDENTS WILL, YOU KNOW, ACHIEVE. AND I LOVE THE GOAL, BUT ALL IS A PRETTY LIMITING TARGET.
SO, THIS IS SOMETHING WE'RE GOING TO BE REVISITING AT THE RETREAT BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT SMART GOALS THAT ARE MEASURABLE, ACHIEVABLE, YOU KNOW AND TIME BOUND.
SO THAT IS GOING TO BE AN ONGOING, YOU KNOW.
AS FAR AS THIS REPORT GOES, AS FAR AS THE MONITORING GOES, WE ARE.
YEAH, WE HAVE A FEW REPORTS THAT WE NEED TO LOOK AT THE WORDING.
WELL, KRISTI, IF I COULD ALSO ADD IN.
YEAH. OUR INDIVIDUAL SCHOOLS ALSO SET SMART GOALS EVERY YEAR WITHIN THEIR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN.
SO THAT IS SOMETHING THAT IS MEASURED REGULARLY BY THE INDIVIDUAL BUILDINGS.
AND THEY HAVE INDIVIDUAL TEAMS THAT ARE MONITORING THAT PROGRESS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AS WELL.
AND WE HAVE CLASSROOM TEACHERS OUT THERE WHO CAN ATTEST TO.
AND ONE OF THE AREAS THAT WE HAVE ON OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS IS DEFINITELY ATTENDANCE, AS KRISTI WAS MENTIONING, AND SOME REALLY SIGNIFICANT AND INTENTIONAL EFFORTS IN THAT AREA AS WELL.
[00:55:01]
SO, I NOTICED THAT FURTHER DOWN ON THE AGENDA IS THE ACCELERATED THE PLAN FOR HIGHLY CAPABLE.YOUTH. HAS THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS IN THOSE PROGRAMS BECAUSE I THINK IT'S MORE THAN ONE PROGRAM.
HAVE THEY? HAS THAT BEEN ON THE RISE? WHAT'S? THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION.
AND THAT'S ONE OF THOSE QUESTIONS THAT I KNOW AHEAD OF TIME THAT WAS GOING TO BE ASKED.
I COULD HAVE GOTTEN THAT DATA.
I DON'T I CAN'T JUST WHIP THAT DATA UP.
NO. AND I DON'T NECESSARILY EXPECT THAT BECAUSE IT WAS KIND OF AN OFF THE WALL QUESTION.
SO OTHER QUESTIONS REGARDING THE EVALUATION.
AND SO, A LOT OF OUR EVALUATION IS DONE AT THE TIME WE DO THE MONITORING REPORTS.
AND THAT HELPS TO KEEP IT TIMELY.
THEY APPRECIATE AND LIKE SO AND CERTAINLY IT HAS BEEN A BENEFIT FROM GOING FROM THE OLD SYSTEM WHEN WE DID THE SUPERINTENDENT EVALUATIONS AND IT WAS LIKE, OH, GREAT, IT'S JUNE.
OKAY. WHAT HAS BEEN GOOD, BAD AND OTHERWISE? BUT THIS SUMMATION TELLS WHAT'S GOING ON AND GIVES US A CHANCE EACH MONTH, ESSENTIALLY TO GIVE SOME FEEDBACK.
SO OTHER COMMENTS THAT PEOPLE WOULD.
PEGGY. YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.
THERE'S A BUNCH OF THESE INDICATORS THAT WE HAVE KIND OF KICKED DOWN TO THE DOWN THE ROAD TO THE RETREAT, SO WE HAVE TIME TO HASH THEM OUT AND, AND WORK ON THEM BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT SOMETHING THAT ARE SIMPLE.
SO I KNOW IT'LL TAKE US SOME TIME TO GET THROUGH IT.
I THINK ALSO WE'VE MADE SOME CHANGES AS FAR AS THE.
WE'VE MADE SOME CHANGES THERE.
MOST OF THEM ARE ANNUAL, I BELIEVE, AT THIS POINT, WHICH IS.
PROBABLY AGGRESSIVE. BUT AS WE MOVE DOWN THE ROAD AND WE GET BETTER CLARIFICATION AND MORE PRECISE, PERHAPS WE CAN START PUSHING THAT OUT FURTHER. ABSOLUTELY.
I THINK AS WE HAVE INDICATORS, I MEAN, SOME OF ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE WE MENTIONED AS WE WERE DISCUSSING SOME OF THOSE INDICATORS, IT'S, YOU KNOW, SOME OF THESE THINGS ARE LEGAL. YOU KNOW, YOU CAN'T SPEND MONEY YOU DON'T HAVE OR VARIOUS THINGS AS AN EXAMPLE, YOU KNOW, DO WE NEED TO REVIEW THAT EVERY YEAR? WELL, IT'S PRETTY OBVIOUS IF OUR FUND BALANCE IS POSITIVE THAT WE HAVEN'T SPENT MORE MONEY, YOU KNOW, SO WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT WE CAN KIND OF STREAMLINE SO THAT WE CAN FOCUS ON SOME OF THE MORE IMPORTANT STUFF? BECAUSE IT WOULD BE VERY AGGRESSIVE TO DO THESE EVERY YEAR.
THEY DON'T HAPPEN BY THEMSELVES AND OVERNIGHT.
YOU KNOW, JUST AS YOU KNOW, YOU SAY WE SHOULDN'T FOCUS EXCLUSIVELY ON ACADEMICS.
YOU KNOW THAT THERE'S MORE TO YOU KNOW, STUDENT PROGRESS AND SUCCESSFUL REPORT CARD OF SORTS.
I DON'T FEEL LIKE OUR MONITORING REPORTS ARE SUFFICIENT TO COVER EVERYTHING.
I MEAN, IT'S LIKE I THINK THERE ARE OTHER, OTHER INDICATORS, OTHER ASPECTS OF PERFORMANCE THAT THAT COULD ALSO BE INCLUDED ON HERE THAT ARE NOT IT'S JUST NOT AS HOLISTIC, I GUESS, AS.
AND I DON'T KNOW, YOU KNOW, IS THIS SOMETHING THAT WE CAN DISCUSS AT THE RETREAT IN TERMS OF, YOU KNOW, PULLING SOME OF THESE OTHER, OTHER THINGS IN? DO YOU HAVE AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT YOU'RE.
I MEAN, I THINK THAT THAT'S A GREAT IDEA.
I'M JUST TRYING TO WELL, YEAH.
THERE'S LIKE, YOU KNOW, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.
THERE'S THE, YOU KNOW, THE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT IS ONE OF THE.
[01:00:01]
ONE OF THE AREAS.AND I WOULD HAVE TO LOOK OFF OF BECAUSE OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD I CAN'T SAY.
BUT PART OF THAT IS BECAUSE WE DO HAVE IT ON A TWO-YEAR CYCLE.
THERE ARE SOME OF THOSE LIKE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COMMUNITY COMES UP IN FEBRUARY OF THIS COMING YEAR AND IT'S ON A BIANNUAL BASIS.
SO, WE WOULDN'T HAVE COVERED IT THIS YEAR IN THIS CYCLE.
BUT AGAIN, IT'S TRYING TO FIND THAT BALANCE, BUT CERTAINLY A TOPIC OF CONVERSATION.
AND WSSDA HAS AN EVALUATION SHEET AS WELL.
RIGHT? I MEAN, THEY HAVE A TEMPLATE THAT YOU CAN USE FOR.
I DON'T KNOW, OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD.
BUT THEY HAVE TEMPLATES FOR MOST EVERYTHING.
SO, I SUSPECT THAT THAT THEY DO.
OKAY. THE SCENE AND HEARING NO OTHER COMMENTS.
YOU KNOW, I WOULD PUT FORTH THAT BASED ON THE SUMMATION OF THE REPORT AND THE MONITORING REPORTS THAT WE'VE LOOKED AT OVER THE YEARS OR OVER THE YEAR THAT OUR SUPERINTENDENT IS DOING A GREAT JOB.
IS THERE WORK TO BE DONE? YES. AND SHE'LL BE THE FIRST TO SAY THAT.
BUT I'M GLAD TO HAVE HER HEADING UP THE TEAM.
MOVE THAT WE ACCEPT THIS MONITORING SUBMISSION REPORT AS A POSITIVE REFLECTION OF OUR SUPERINTENDENT'S PERFORMANCE OVER THE COURSE OF THE LAST YEAR.
SO, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE INFORMATION FOR THE NEXT TIME AROUND.
WHEN WE DO THIS, I FEEL LIKE WE ARE MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION BECAUSE I HAVE HEARD SOME POSITIVE THINGS, BUT I WISH WE HAD A LITTLE BIT MORE SOLID EVIDENCE IN TO BACK UP THE ACADEMICS.
SO THAT IS THE REPORT YOU WILL GET IN OCTOBER.
AND YOU CAN EXPECT TO SEE THAT EVERY OCTOBER.
AND THEN, YOU KNOW, THE TEAM BACK HERE.
I KNOW ANY TIME YOU WANT TO SAY, WHAT'S THE DATA GOING, WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH I-READY THAT IS AVAILABLE ALSO OUR SCHOOL'S IMPROVEMENT PLANS, JUST AS KELLY SAID, THEY HAVE THAT DATA ALL THE TIME.
SO, IT'S NOT DATA YOU CAN'T HAVE ACCESS TO.
SO, IF YOU EVER HAVE A QUESTION OR A WONDER, JUST ASK.
AND MY QUESTION IS WOULD THOSE REPORTS BE WHERE WE COULD JUST FIND THEM WITHOUT HASSLING ANYBODY? NO. YOU I MEAN, THE REPORTS BELONG TO THE BUILDING.
I GO MEET WITH OBADIAH AND THE TEAM.
I GO SIT IN THEIR STAFF MEETINGS WHERE THEY'RE HAVING CONVERSATIONS.
THEY HAVE A FRIDAY MEETING WHERE THEY PULL OUT DATA.
I GO SIT IN CLASSROOMS. THAT'S WHY I'M IN SCHOOLS ALL THE TIME, BECAUSE IF I WANT TO KNOW HOW OUR SCHOOLS ARE FUNCTIONING, I GOT TO BE WITH THE PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING THE WORK EVERY SINGLE DAY.
AND WE HAVE TWO STUDENTS HERE ALL THE TIME THAT YOU KNOW, I HAVE A STUDENT ADVISORY.
EVERY SCHOOL HAS A LEADERSHIP TEAM THAT I SIT AND ASK THEM, HOW ARE THINGS GOING, WHAT'S WORKING WELL, WHAT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED? AND IF YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW WE'RE REALLY DOING, ASK OUR KIDS, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HOLD BACK.
SO, I THINK, PEGGY, ANY OF THAT INFORMATION CAN BE GIVEN TO YOU.
[01:05:01]
SORRY. CAN PARENTS CONTACT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TO GET THAT KIND OF, YOU KNOW, REINFORCEMENT THAT, YES, INDEED.YOU KNOW, YOUR KIDS' CLASS IS THAT THEY'RE MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, THAT, YOU KNOW, PARENTS JUST NEED TO CALL THEIR SCHOOL AND, AND THEY WILL HAVE THE SAME ACCESS OUR STAFF MEETS WITH.
YEAH, OUR STAFF MEETS WITH FAMILIES ALL THE TIME.
THAT'S, YOU KNOW, THAT'S THE DOOR THAT'S OPEN.
I CAN'T ACTUALLY REMEMBER WHAT THE TOPIC WAS OR WHAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT, BUT THE THROUGH LINE WITH EVERY ONE OF THOSE TEACHERS THAT THEY TALKED ABOUT WAS THE WORK THAT THEY DO WITHIN PARTNERSHIP WITH FAMILIES.
THAT'S THE THING THAT THE FAMILY IS.
AND SO, PARENTS JUST HAVE TO CALL THE SCHOOL.
THEY CALL ME AND SAY, HEY, CAN YOU KNOW, I ASK YOU ABOUT THIS? SO YEAH, THE DOOR IS OPEN.
IT'S JUST A MATTER OF ENGAGEMENT.
AND I THINK ABOUT ALL OF THE PARENTS SQUARES THAT GO OUT TO INDIVIDUAL FAMILIES, WHICH I APPRECIATE THAT MODALITY BECAUSE IT SHOWS UP IN A FAMILY'S INBOX IN THEIR HOME LANGUAGE. AND SO, WE'VE EVEN REMOVED THE BARRIER OF LANGUAGE SHOULDN'T BE A BARRIER.
KRISTI HAD ALSO MENTIONED THAT AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, I CAN SPEAK TO THIS SPECIFICALLY, BUT THREE TIMES A YEAR PARENTS RECEIVE A SPECIFIC REPORT FROM BOTH I-READY AS WELL AS THE ERLE AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL.
SO THOSE ARE PUT IN EITHER PROGRESS REPORT OR THEIR SEMESTER ONE AND SEMESTER TWO REPORT CARDS.
AND EVEN WHEN YOU DON'T GET THE PHYSICAL REPORT ANYTIME, LIKE IF YOU HAVE A KID IN THE DISTRICT OR IF YOU ARE A KID IN THE DISTRICT, YOU CAN JUST GO ON TO SKYWARD AND LOG IN TO YOUR ACCOUNT AND SEE YOUR GRADES AND YOUR TEST SCORES FOR YOURSELF.
IF YOU'RE A STUDENT, OR IF YOU'RE A PARENT AND YOUR CHILDREN IN THE DISTRICT AND THOSE HAVE TEST SCORES DATING BACK TO KINDERGARTEN, LIKE A COUPLE MONTHS BACK, I WAS ABLE TO GO AND I WAS ABLE TO FIGURE OUT MY KINDERGARTEN MATH MAP SCORE.
SO, ONE MORE QUESTION ON A PROMISE.
SO I NOTICED IN THE BUDGET THAT, YOU KNOW, THERE'S AN EXTRA MONEY HAS BEEN EARMARKED FOR THE HIGHLY CAPABLE, YOU KNOW, WHICH WOULD BE ACADEMIC EMPHASIS ALSO ON THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER, YOU KNOW, CLOSING THE GAP.
I SAW MORE DEDICATED TO THAT IN THE BUDGET.
WHAT OTHER AREAS, YOU KNOW, IN THE BUDGET ARE YOU MAKING ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT OF FOCUS? IN THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF OUR STAFF.
THEY ARE THE FIRST TEACHERS IN THERE.
AND AND THE RESEARCH IS VERY CLEAR.
THE STRONGER THE TEACHER, THE HIGHER THE OUTCOMES.
AND SO WE INVEST IN OUR STAFF TO GIVE THEM THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO DO THE JOB.
THEY'RE THEY'RE MAKING THE DIFFERENCE.
YOU KNOW, I CAN I CAN HAND ANYBODY A CURRICULUM AND ASK THEM TO TEACH IT.
BUT IT'S OUR STAFF WHO'S SHOWING UP WITH HEART, WHO'S WALKING ALONGSIDE FAMILIES.
THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO THE STUDENT OUTCOMES.
THAT'S THE NUMBER ONE THING A SCHOOL ORGANIZATION CAN DO.
AND IT WAS A FUN ENVIRONMENT WHERE YOU ALSO GOT TO LEARN.
YEAH. AND IF I COULD ADD ON TO WHAT GABBY WAS SAYING, I THINK EVEN IF I DON'T LOVE THE SUBJECT, JUST SEEING THE PASSION THAT MY TEACHERS HAVE FOR TEACHING THAT SUBJECT, IT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE. AND IT MAKES ME WANT TO COME TO SCHOOL, AND IT MAKES ME WANT TO TALK TO THEM.
AND I THINK THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO OUR EDUCATION.
I THINK, TOO. AND I DIRECTOR MACHADO, I'M THINKING OF YOUR OWN KIDS.
A LOT OF OUR KIDS DON'T NECESSARILY COME TO SCHOOL FOR THE ACADEMIC PARTS, THOUGH.
WE WANT TO SAY THAT'S WHY THEY'RE THERE.
[01:10:02]
BUT THEY'RE COMING FOR THIS.THIS ATHLETICS, FOR THE DRAMA, THE MUSIC, THE ART.
SO WE INVEST IN THOSE THINGS, TOO.
WE HAVE MORE AS AS YOU HEARD AT THE CTE NIGHT, WE HAVE MORE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES THAN ANY OTHER DISTRICT IN WHATCOM AND SKAGIT COUNTY. THERE'S A REASON THOSE ARE SO POPULAR.
IT'S BECAUSE THEIR HANDS ON THE WAY THAT WE'RE THINKING ABOUT EARLY LEARNERS AND MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE INVESTING IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION IN A WAY THAT WORKS WITH THE WAY THE BRAIN IS DEVELOPING.
SO IT'S THOSE TYPES OF THINGS.
FOR SOME, IT'S EDUCATION FOR ALL.
SO YOU KNOW, I THINK WHAT PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE AND, AND I'LL SHARE THIS STAT STATISTIC JUST BECAUSE I TAUGHT KINDERGARTEN IN EVERY KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOM EVERY YEAR, AND I CAN LOOK AT ANY DISTRICT AND I HAVE DATA TO SHOW THAT, AND I'M HAPPY TO SHARE IT.
THERE IS A NINE YEAR AGE SPAN.
NINE YEARS AGE SPAN ACROSS THE ACADEMICS, EVERY SINGLE KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOM.
AND SO THE MAGIC OF THAT INSTRUCTION HAS TO BE TO TAKE THE CHILD WHO'S SHOWING UP IN A DEVELOPMENTAL AREA THAT'S CLOSER TO A CHILD THAT'S ONE, AND BEING ABLE TO SHOW UP AND SUPPORT A CHILD WHOSE DEVELOPMENTAL CONTINUUM IS CLOSER TO A CHILD OF NINE YEARS OF AGE, AND BE ABLE TO CLOSE THAT GAP.
AND SO A HIGHLY SKILLED TEACHER.
SO THAT'S WHY WE INVEST IN OUR PEOPLE.
OKAY. ANY OTHER COMMENTS? THEN WE WILL GO AHEAD AND MOVE FORWARD WITH VOTE ON WHETHER WE ACCEPT THIS MONITORING REPORT AS SUPPORTIVE OF POSITIVE PERFORMANCE BY OUR SUPERINTENDENT.
SO WE'LL START WITH THE ADVISORY VOTE FOR THE STUDENT REPS.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING I.
OKAY. AND SO THEN, BY THE ELECTED BOARD MEMBERS, ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
AND. THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR A GOOD DISCUSSION.
SO SPEAKING OF GOOD DISCUSSION, WE WILL NOW MOVE ON TO AN INTERESTING TOPIC.
AND THAT IS ITEM 7.03, WHICH IS CELL PHONE USE IN SCHOOLS.
IT WAS INTERESTING TO READ THE CURRENT POLICY, WHICH WAS ADOPTED IN JANUARY 28TH OF 2014, AND I SENT A NOTE TO KRISTI GOING, WELL, MAYBE WE JUST, YOU KNOW, ENFORCE IT BECAUSE ITEM A SAYS THAT TELECOMMUNICATION DEVICES WILL BE TURNED ON AND OPERATED ONLY BEFORE AND AFTER THE REGULAR SCHOOL DAY AND DURING THE SCHOOL STUDENTS LUNCH BREAKS.
I HAVE A FEELING THAT THAT POLICY MAY BE.
SO ANYWAY YEAH, THIS HAS BEEN AN INTERESTING TOPIC.
I JUST FINISHED UP READING THE ANXIETY GENERATION BOOK.
I WOULD I KNOW NANCY RECOMMENDED IT LAST WEEK OR LAST MONTH.
I WOULD FULLY ENDORSE IT AS WELL.
THE OTHERS DID NOT GET THEIRS TILL COLLEGE.
IT DEPENDS ON YOUR PERSPECTIVE.
BUT WITH THOSE THINGS, IT WAS INTERESTING.
SOME OF THE DATA THAT IS BEING SHOWN AS THE IMPACT AND AS I WAS READING THE BOOK AND THINKING ABOUT THIS TOPIC, I DON'T KNOW THAT, YOU KNOW, I DON'T WANT TO CRIMINALIZE CELL PHONES.
PROBABLY EVERYBODY IN THIS ROOM HAS ONE.
[01:15:02]
GOOD FOR OUR SOCIETY.CONCLUSION. SO TONIGHT ARE PART OF OUR DISCUSSION WAS JUST TO INTRODUCE AND TALK ABOUT THIS A LITTLE BIT AND SEE IN SOME OF THE CONVERSATIONS I'VE HAD WITH KRISTI ABOUT THIS, I DON'T KNOW THAT WE AS A BOARD WANT TO JUST GO, HEY, WE'RE GOING TO ENACT OUR OLD POLICY OR A NEW ONE.
I THINK IT'S MORE CRITICAL THAT WE GET BUY IN FROM BOTH THE COMMUNITY HOPEFULLY EVEN FROM STUDENTS, AS WE PRESENT SOME OF THE DATA TO THEM AND SHOW, YOU KNOW, IT REALLY IS A, YOU KNOW, THERE ARE SOME, SOME THINGS THAT GO ON WITH CELL PHONES, PARTICULARLY WITH SOME OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA AND HOW THE ALGORITHMS ARE NOT DESIGNED TO SUPPORT STUDENTS, BUT THEY'RE AND OR ADULTS.
I WAS READING THE BOOK AND I WAS ALSO AT YELLOWSTONE.
SO LAST WEEK I WAS IN YELLOWSTONE.
IT'S VERY INTERESTING WATCHING GEYSERS AND MUD POTS WHILE IT'S SNOWING.
THAT'S AN INTERESTING CONCEPT, BUT WE WENT FROM SNOWING TO NICE, NORMAL WEATHER.
BUT ONE OF THE IT WAS KIND OF APROPOS AS I WAS READING THE BOOK AT THE PART I WAS ON WAS SAYING, DON'T BE SO CONNECTED WITH YOUR CELL PHONE IN THE WORLD AROUND YOU THAT ALL YOU'RE DOING IS TAKING PICTURES TO POST THINGS, ENJOY THE MOMENT.
AND IT REALLY DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
SO AGAIN, I'LL SHUT UP AND LET THE REST OF YOU GUYS GIVE YOUR INPUT.
BECAUSE AGAIN, ULTIMATELY OUR GOAL IS TO DECIDE, DO WE WANT TO CONTINUE THIS TOPIC AND CONVERSATION AND GO SOMEWHERE WITH IT? OR IS IT LIKE, NO, WE DON'T WANT TO TOUCH THIS WITH A TEN FOOT POLE.
SO. I'M IMMEDIATELY SECONDING YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THE NOT JUST TAKING PICTURES TO POST THEM BECAUSE I SWEAR I DO NOT HAVE A SINGLE PICTURE OF ANY OF LIKE THE BEST MOMENTS AND BEST EXPERIENCES IN MY LIFE, BECAUSE THOSE MOMENTS HAVEN'T BEEN TIED TO A CELL PHONE.
AND I THINK THAT THIS IS DEFINITELY A POLICY THAT WE SHOULD EXPLORE IN THE FUTURE AND WORK DEEPER ON, BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH IT'S GOING TO BE CONTROVERSIAL, ESPECIALLY WITH STUDENTS I THINK IT'S DEFINITELY SOMETHING THAT WILL HAVE A HUGE IMPACT ON THEIR LIVES, NOT JUST IN SCHOOL, BUT IN LATER LIFE AND OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL DURING THAT TIMELINE.
AND I THINK IT'S DEFINITELY SOMETHING THAT THE DISTRICT SHOULD HAVE A UNITED STANCE ON AND DO MORE RESEARCH ON SO THAT WE CAN HAVE A WELL BACKED UP PLAN FOR HOW TO DEAL WITH THIS.
I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO REFLECT ON THE FACT THAT YOU REFLECT ON THE BOOK AND, AND SOME OF THE PASSAGES THAT ARE SPELLED OUT IN THERE.
I THINK OUR FOCUS SHOULD BE THE EFFECTS IT HAS ON STUDENTS AT SCHOOL.
AND LET'S CUT OUT WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SCHOOL OR AT HOME.
THAT'S A PARENTAL THING AND WE DON'T WANT TO INTERRUPT THAT.
THAT'S UP TO THE PARENTS AT HOME.
BUT I THINK OUR FOCUS NEEDS TO BE ON THE EFFECTS IT'S HAVING ON OUR STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL, PERIOD.
OUR FOCUS SHOULD BE THE EFFECTS IT HAS ON OUR STUDENTS AT OUR LEARNING CENTER.
AND SO I JUST WANT TO MAKE THAT CLARIFICATION.
YOU KNOW, OUR FOCUS AS THE BOARD NEEDS TO BE HOW IT AFFECTS SCHOOL.
AND AS WE WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT WITH ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE, HOW IT IMPACTS THAT TOO.
SO YEAH, SO I AGREE TO AN EXTENT.
THE EFFECTS THAT WE SEE OF CELL PHONE USE AT THIS AGE.
BOTH AFFECT LIFE AT HOME AND AT SCHOOL.
SO UNDERSTANDING WHY IT'S EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO US HERE IN THIS ROOM AND I THE REASON I WAS A STRONG PROPONENT FOR US DISCUSSING THIS, THIS IS A PROCESS, RIGHT? AND WHEN WE HAVE A A PROCESS, IT REQUIRES DIFFERENT STAGES.
[01:20:04]
WE NEED TO DISCUSS IT.THERE HAS TO BE A PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD.
WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT PEOPLE THINK ABOUT IT.
THAT IS THE WHY, YOU KNOW, UNDERSTANDING.
WHY IS IT THAT THAT WE'RE DOING THIS, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO? WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO IS HELPING OUR KIDS ACHIEVE MORE.
THAT'S THE PART THAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO DURING SCHOOL.
WE NEED A STUDY AND AND EVALUATE.
WHAT PROCESS? WHERE WHERE WE FOCUS AND INTERACT AND THINK ABOUT WHAT IS IT THAT WE'RE GOING TO DO.
SO WE'RE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF THIS.
AND THIS IS THE THE SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND IN ME.
THE TRAINING THAT I HAVE IS THAT I WANTED TO UNDERSTAND WHY IS IT THAT THIS IS SO DETRIMENTAL TO OUR YOUTH? I HAVE THREE KIDS.
THEY ALL GO TO THE FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
RIGHT. AND YOU, YOU MAY ALL KNOW THEM, BUT IT IS THERE'S A STUDY BY HARVARD THAT'S IS TITLED WINDOWS OF DEVELOPMENTAL SENSITIVITY TO SOCIAL MEDIA.
YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE SURPRISED THAT WHEN THEY WHEN A HUMAN BEING IS MOST SENSITIVE TO SOCIAL MEDIA FOR FEMALES IS AGES 11 TO 19, MALES 14 TO 19, KIND OF MAKES SENSE TO ME.
YOU KNOW, KIDS, BOYS ARE MORE LIKE, YOU KNOW, THEY WANT TO PLAY SPORTS.
AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY GET INTO SOCIAL MEDIA AND THEN THEY GET YOU KNOW JUST ENGULFED IN IT.
THEN THERE'S ANOTHER STUDY THAT IT'S CALLED THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON MENTAL HEALTH.
IT'S NOT SURPRISING THAT FINDINGS IN THIS RESEARCH INDICATE THAT DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, AND LOW SELF ESTEEM ARE MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS ASSOCIATED WITH HEAVY CONSUMPTION OF SOCIAL MEDIA.
OUR KIDS ARE IN SCHOOL, AND WHILE THIS IS A TOOL FOR ME AND AND IT IS A GREAT TOOL.
IN SCHOOL, WE ARE BEING DISTRACTED FROM OUR MOST IMPORTANT ACTIVITY, WHICH IS LEARNING.
OUR TEACHERS ARE NOT BEING ABLE TO TEACH BECAUSE OUR KIDS ARE DISTRACTED.
SO I AM A VERY STRONG PROPONENT.
I TALKED TO MY KIDS AND I ASKED THEM, WHAT IF WE TAKE CELL PHONES AWAY? AND AND THEY WERE ALL IN FAVOR OF IT? THE ONLY.
CALL IT NEGATIVE THAT I HAVE HEARD THE ONLY ONE AND I HAVE THOUGHT OF THIS SO MUCH IS MAYBE A PARENT SAYING, WELL, I'M NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH MY KIDS AND IT'S NOT A NEGATIVE.
YOU KNOW, WE HAVE SCHOOLS THAT WE CAN CALL.
I HAVE DONE IT AND THERE'S NO PROBLEM.
WE DID IT WHEN WE WERE GROWING UP.
I'M GOING TO SAY I AM GUILTY OF THIS BECAUSE I GREW UP IN A DIFFERENT GENERATION, THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE PHONES, AND I WAS THINKING THAT I WAS JUST PROVIDING MY KIDS WITH THE TOOLS THAT THEY NEEDED.
BUT THE MOMENT THAT MY KIDS PUT THEIR PHONES DOWN, THE MOMENT THAT THEY ARE HAPPIER, THE MOMENT THAT THE MOMENT THAT THEY'RE THEY'RE MORE FOCUSED, THE MOMENT THAT THEY ARE MORE ACTIVE.
I WENT TO A BRUNO MARS CONCERT.
I HAVE TO PUT MY CELL PHONE IN A LITTLE POUCH.
IF BRUNO MARS KNOWS THIS AND I DON'T.
I AM MAKING A BIG MISTAKE, ESPECIALLY FOR MY KIDS, WHEN THEIR FUTURE DEPENDS ON THESE FORMATIVE YEARS AND IT'S HANGING ON IT, WHY NOT DO THE RIGHT THING? I UNDERSTAND THAT THE KIDS THERE'S GOING TO BE SOME PUSHBACK, BUT THAT'S WHY WE CAME HERE TO THIS WORLD BEFORE THEM, TO LEARN AND TO BE ABLE TO HELP THEM UNDERSTAND. AS THIS STUDY FROM HARVARD SAID, THEIR DEVELOPMENT, THEIR MENTAL DEVELOPMENT IS NOT QUITE THERE.
AND THEY ARE EXTREMELY SENSITIVE, EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO SOCIAL MEDIA AND SEEING SOMEONE.
PORTRAYING THAT THEY'RE HAVING FUN WITH OTHER OF THEIR FRIENDS.
WHEN YOU ARE BORED AT HOME, IT GETS YOU.
OR WHEN YOU'RE AT SCHOOL AND WHEN YOU'RE STAYING BECAUSE YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND MORE MATH AND YOU SEE SOMEBODY HAVING FUN PUTS PRESSURE ON YOU, AND THEN YOU DON'T DO WHAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING.
SO I JUST WANT TO LEAVE THAT THERE FOR YOU GUYS.
[01:25:03]
I ALSO WANTED TO ADD ON TO THIS BY SAYING THAT I COMPLETELY AGREE.I THINK THAT, YOU KNOW, IN ONE OF MY CLASSES, IT'S VERY ENFORCED THAT WE DON'T HAVE OUR PHONES.
AND LIKE I'VE, YOU CAN'T TAKE IT OUT AT ALL.
IT CAN'T BE SEEN. AND I CAN ASSURE YOU IN THAT CLASS, ALL THE STUDENTS HAVE FUN.
BUT I THINK OVERALL LIKE SOMEONE MENTIONED EARLIER TODAY, IT'S AN INVESTMENT IN OUR FUTURE.
AND I THINK THAT I, YOU KNOW, WHEN I GROW UP AND THE STUDENTS AROUND ME GROW UP AND WE LOOK BACK, WE'RE GOING TO BE HAPPY THAT WE THAT SOMEBODY TOOK THE TIME TO COME UP WITH A STRATEGIC PLAN TO MAKE SURE THAT, YOU KNOW, WE WERE OFF THESE DEVICES AND WE ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW, WERE CONNECTED TO THE PEOPLE AROUND US.
AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES SCHOOL SO MUCH FUN IS WHEN YOU GET TO SCHOOL AND YOU CAN TALK TO THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU, YOU CAN TALK TO YOUR TEACHERS THAT THAT ONE PERSON THAT SITS NEXT TO YOU HAVE LUNCH WITH THEM.
AND IF AS A SUPERINTENDENT, I AM ASKING THE BOARD TO INVEST IN THIS CONVERSATION.
THEY TRY TO GET THE PHONES, PLEASE PUT THE PHONES AWAY.
SO WHEN YOU WERE ASKING WHAT'S AN INVESTMENT WE CAN DO TO IMPROVE SCORES? THIS IS ONE OF THEM.
IT IS A PROCESS AND I APPRECIATE THAT.
ANTONIO, I, I HAVE TO THINK THROUGH ALL THE DIFFERENT PIECES, AND DIRECTOR COCHRAN AND I MET WITH A DISTRICT DOWN SOUTH THAT PUT TOGETHER A PLAN THAT SUPERINTENDENT TOOK THE APPROACH OF.
THEY WERE NOT GOING TO TAKE PHONES.
SO IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO THE PHONE WHILE IN OUR CARE, WE HAVE TO KNOW THAT.
SO THEY CHOSE NOT TO GO THAT ROUTE.
THEY TOOK THEIR POLICY AND THEY ELEVATED IT AND IT BECAME VERY PUBLIC.
IT WILL JUST BE GETTING IMPLEMENTED DISTRICT WIDE THIS FALL.
I DON'T WANT IT TO BE AN INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL THING.
IF IF WE'RE GOING TO DO THIS, I WANT IT TO BE ABOUT FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND WE'RE ALL IN.
I HAVE BEEN TALKING TO FAMILIES WHO DON'T AGREE WITH THIS.
AND PART OF IT IS YOU KNOW, WE ESPECIALLY AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, PARENTS ARE FEARFUL OF THEIR DID MY CHILD GET TO SCHOOL? HOW CAN I KNOW WHERE MY CHILD IS? AND SO THEY'RE TRACKING THEIR CHILDREN.
THEY'RE ABLE TO TRACK WHERE THEY ARE BY USING A SMARTWATCH OR THE PHONE.
THEY CAN, YOU KNOW, I DO IT NOW.
I DO DON'T TELL MY KIDS THIS IS ONLINE, BUT I DO THIS NOW ON THEY'RE IN COLLEGE AND I'VE GOT FIND MY PHONE AND I'M, I KNOW WHEN THEY'RE BACK IN THEIR DORM OR WHEREVER. SO I GET THE FEAR PART.
AND, STEVE, I DO APPRECIATE THAT WE CAN'T CONTROL.
RIGHT? I CAN'T I CAN'T MAKE A KID LEARN.
I CANNOT MAKE A STUDENT COME TO SCHOOL.
WE CAN ENCOURAGE AND WE CAN EDUCATE.
AND SO THAT'S THAT'S PART OF THE PLAN.
WHEN THE TEAM AND I HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS AND I'M TALKING ABOUT WITH CHRIS AND THE COUNSELORS WHAT DOES THE PARENT EDUCATION SIDE OF THIS KNOW? BECAUSE PARENTS WANT TO KNOW.
AND SO WHAT CAN WE DO TO HAVE A CAMPAIGN THAT EDUCATES FAMILIES? AND I, I TALKED TO THESE TWO YESTERDAY.
I WAS ASKING THEM ABOUT THEIR OPINIONS ABOUT HIGHLY CAPABLE AND CELL PHONES.
WE NEED TO BRING STAKEHOLDERS IN.
SO I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW IF THE BOARD SUPPORTS THIS CONVERSATION.
I'M ASKING YOU TO SUPPORT THIS CONVERSATION.
I'M ASKING THIS TO BE A FOCUS OF OUR.
OVER THE NEXT YEAR, I WOULD LIKE TIME WITH MY TEAM TO DEVELOP A PLAN OF ACTION.
[01:30:05]
SO THERE'S A REPRESENTATIVE FROM YOUR GROUP HAVING THAT CONVERSATION.BUT IT CAN START BY MAKING SURE THAT WE HAVE A SOLID POLICY IN PLACE THAT HAS SOME TEETH, THAT TEACHERS CAN HOLD THAT UP AND SAY, THIS IS WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IF YOU ABUSE THE POLICY AT THIS TIME, OR THIS IS HOW WE'RE GOING TO SUPPORT YOU.
SO I, I WOULD LOVE IT IF THE BOARD WOULD BE WILLING TO BACK THIS CONVERSATION.
ONE OF THE FALLOUTS THAT I FIRST THOUGHT OF TOO, WAS IN MY WORLD.
YOU LEAD BY EXAMPLE, AND I'M JUST WONDERING WHAT THE FALLOUT WILL BE WITH FACULTY AND ADMIN AND THOSE PEOPLE, BECAUSE THERE ARE LEADERS AND THEY'RE GOING TO NEED TO LEAD BY EXAMPLE, AND SO ARE THEY GOING TO BE ABLE TO, YOU KNOW, SET THEIR PHONES ASIDE AND BE ABLE TO GIVE A POSITIVE EXAMPLE TO OUR STUDENTS THAT, HEY, I, I DON'T NEED THIS.
YOU KNOW, I THOUGHT OF THAT TOO.
YOU LEAD BY EXAMPLE AND OUR LEADERS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, THINK ABOUT THAT.
I THINK AS WE GO FURTHER INTO DISCUSSING THIS, AN IMPORTANT THING IS ENTERTAINING THE IDEA OF COMPROMISE, NOT NECESSARILY IN COMPROMISING THE IDEALS BEHIND IT, BUT.
IT'S AN EXAGGERATION, BUT LIKE.
I KNOW A LOT OF STUDENTS ARE TOTALLY RECEPTIVE TO NOT HAVING THEIR PHONES IN CLASS, BUT IN ADDITION TO THE STUDENTS WANTING TO BE ON THEIR PHONES LIKE AT LUNCH, THERE'S ALSO THE IMPACT OF THAT IS ANOTHER WAY TO A SEWAGE PARENT.
FEARS IS, HEY, YOU CAN CONTACT YOUR KID AT LUNCH TIME.
THEY ARE ABLE TO RESPOND TO YOU AT LUNCH TIME.
THAT'S NOT LEARNING TIME. THAT'S THEIR TIME.
AND THAT IS WHEN YOU CAN GET SOME LIKE CONCERNS TALKED OUT.
IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GO THROUGH THE OFFICE ABOUT TRANSPORTATION.
I THINK THE BIG THING, YOU KNOW, AS I WAS LOOKING AND AS I WAS READING THIS BOOK, I THINK EDUCATION IS OUR IS OUR BUSINESS IS OUR THING. AND WHEN YOU LOOK AT THAT EDUCATING PEOPLE, I THINK PEOPLE CAN SEE THAT AND GO, WOW, I DIDN'T REALIZE THIS WAS AFFECTING LEARNING. IT WASN'T.
AND HOW IT'S IMPACTING THE EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING.
AND I THINK THE PROBLEM IS, IS IT'S EASY.
YOU KNOW, I WATCH IT EVERY DAY WHEN I'M IN AT WORK, YOU KNOW, PARENTS IS THERE.
THEY'VE GOT THEIR PET. THEY'RE TRYING TO MANAGE THEIR PET AND THEIR KID.
THE EASY THING TO DO IS YOU GIVE THE KID THE CELL PHONE BECAUSE THAT DISTRACTS THEM.
THEN YOU ONLY HAVE ONE THING TO WORRY ABOUT.
AND THEY JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE IMPACT IS.
SO. ANY OTHER COMMENTS? GOOD DISCUSSION.
I'M SENSING THAT WE HAVE A POSITIVE SUPPORT, BUT I WOULD LIKE US TO.
TAKE A VOTE AS FAR AS IS THERE A MOTION OR THAT THAT SOMEBODY WOULD LIKE TO PUT AS FAR AS SUPPORTING THIS? FURTHER DISCUSSION AND EXPLORATION OF.
STRENGTHENING OUR CELL PHONE EDUCATION AND POLICY.
AS YOU ALLUDED TO IN THE BEGINNING.
KEVIN EXHIBIT A ON THE POLICY.
YOU KNOW, I MEAN, YOU KNOW, ENFORCEMENT OF THAT WOULD BE A START.
YOU'VE ALREADY HAVE THE POLICY IN PLACE.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT ADDITIONS OR SUBTRACTIONS YOU NEED TO DO FROM THAT.
IT'S PRETTY CLEAR TO ME WHAT THE INTENT OF THAT WAS.
[01:35:02]
YOU KNOW, FUTURE ENFORCEMENT POSSIBLY.YES. CHRIS AND I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT THIS POLICY AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE ADDED OR SHIFTED.
YOU'LL BE ABLE TO SEE THIS POLICY WITH THE NEW ONE.
BECAUSE I WOULD AGREE WITH YOUR EARLIER COMMENTS.
IT'S SHOULDN'T BE UP TO OUR EDUCATORS TO BE DISCIPLINAS.
THEY THEY'VE GOT ENOUGH TO DO IN THE CLASSROOM THEN WORRY ABOUT STUDENTS AND CELL PHONES.
I MEAN, THAT'S A THAT'S A HUGE DISTRACTION ITSELF AND A WASTE OF TIME.
SO. WE SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT THIS RESPONSIBILITY DOESN'T FALL ON THEIR SHOULDERS.
SO DOES ANYTHING REALLY NEED TO BE DONE WITH THE POLICY, OR DOES THERE NEED TO BE A 32 £0.45 THAT JUST BACKS IT UP AND SAYS EXACTLY HOW WE'RE GOING TO ENFORCE IT? I WILL GET BACK TO YOU ON THAT IN JULY, BECAUSE I'D LIKE TO NOT JUST MAKE THAT DECISION IN A SILO.
I THINK THERE ARE. I MEAN, IF YOU LOOK AT THIS POLICY, IT HASN'T BEEN UPDATED SINCE.
WHAT WAS IT, 2014? YEAH, IT HAS PAGERS AND BEEPERS ON IT, SO THERE IS SOME UP TO DATE PIECES.
I DO THINK, TOO, THAT THERE'S SOME DISTRICTS WHO HAVE PUT IN CLEAR UNDERSTANDING.
SO WHEN IT SAYS STUDENTS WHO VIOLATE THIS POLICY WILL BE SUBJECT TO DISCIPLINARY ACTION, WHAT DOES THAT REALLY MEAN? AND SO THERE NEEDS TO BE A PROCEDURE CREATED AS WELL.
AND SO WE DO HAVE SOME WORK ON OUR END TO DO TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS IS UP TO DATE.
AND SO WE'LL HAVE A MORE UP TO DATE.
IT MAY BE VERY LITTLE THAT CHANGES, BUT THAT WILL BE AVAILABLE TO YOU IN JULY.
AND THEN WITH SOME SUGGESTIONS.
LIKE I SAID, I ALSO WANT TO PROVIDE A SURVEY TO FAMILIES.
MY APPRECIATED THE PUBLIC COMMENT EARLIER TONIGHT IN SUPPORT.
I CAN TELL YOU I HAVE SPENT TIME ON THE PHONE WITH FAMILIES WHEN THEIR CHILD LOST THEIR CELL PHONE AND I SPENT A GOOD AMOUNT OF TIME LISTENING TO A VERY UPSET PARENT BECAUSE IT WAS A FEAR THAT IF I NEED TO GET AHOLD OF MY CHILD, I WON'T BE ABLE TO.
AND SO IT'S THAT RETRAINING, YOU KNOW, FOR YEARS NOW, THEY CAN JUST CONTACT THEIR CHILD.
AND SO HOW DO WE RETRAIN AND HELP PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THOSE PIECES? BUT IT'S ALSO A LITTLE MORE COMPLICATED.
AND SO I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE GATHERING THE INPUT OF OUR STAKEHOLDERS.
I REALLY THINK THIS POLICY IS GOING TO BE.
AND 2014 SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY TO ME.
AND IF WE ARE TRYING TO DO A GOOD JOB, WE'RE GOING TO DO A THOROUGH JOB.
AND WHEN YOU DO THINGS RIGHT, TO PROVIDE THE STRUCTURE TO THE TEACHERS SO THAT THEY ARE NOT FOCUSED ON ENFORCEMENT, BUT THEY ARE, THE IDEA IS SO THAT THEY'RE FOCUSED ON TEACHING.
RIGHT? SO WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO DO A VERY GOOD JOB.
AND IF YOU WANT ME IN THAT COMMITTEE, I WILL DO IT SO THAT THEY ARE DEFINITELY.
AT THE SAME TIME, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND AND WHERE IN THOSE TIMES WHERE WE DON'T KNOW.
IF WE'RE BEING AFFECTED OR BENEFITED WHEN IT COMES TO CERTAIN ITEMS. SO IN THIS CASE, RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT HEAVY USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IS COMPLETELY DETRIMENTAL TO MENTAL HEALTH.
I THINK THAT WE WE CAN HELP THAT OUT.
HELP UNDERSTAND ALL THE STAKEHOLDERS, YOU KNOW THAT'S THAT'S GOING TO BE OUR, OUR HEAVY WORKLOAD TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR STAKEHOLDERS UNDERSTAND THAT OUR TEACHERS FEEL SUPPORTED AND THAT WE CAN DO A DO A JUSTICE SO THAT IT'S NOT IT'S NOT CHAOTIC.
I WOULD AGREE WITH SOME OF THAT.
BUT I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT THIS IS THIS IS A CULTURE CHANGE AND THIS IS BABY STEPS.
[01:40:04]
I DON'T THINK YOU JUMP IN WITH BOTH FEET.MAYBE JUST AN AWARENESS THAT THIS POLICY IS OUT THERE MAY BE ENOUGH.
BUT I, I, I DON'T SEE DOING ANY DRASTIC CHANGES.
I THINK JUST BRINGING AN AWARENESS TO THE SUBJECT AND LET TIME TAKE EFFECT, BECAUSE THIS IS A CULTURE CHANGE AND IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN OVERNIGHT.
IT'S GOING TO BE OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME.
SO I WOULD HATE TO SEE YOU DO ANY DRASTIC CHANGES TO THIS POLICY.
THE ONES THAT I BELIEVE CHRIS SUGGESTED.
SO KEEP IN MIND THE POLICY REVIEW WILL BE NEXT MONTH.
IT WILL GO ON. SO THE PUBLIC HAS A MONTH TO PROVIDE INPUT.
AND I THINK STEVE, YOUR YOUR POINT IS WELL TAKEN IN THE FACT THAT THEN WHEN WE PROVIDE A COMMITTEE, PART OF WHAT'S GOING TO GROUND THAT COMMITTEE WORK IS LOOKING AT THE POLICY.
SO IT MAY BE THAT POLICY HAS CHANGES OVER TIME.
BUT I THINK IT WAS ONE SENTENCE IN THERE.
AND WHEN I WAS TALKING TO THE DISTRICTS DOWN SOUTH.
THEY LEFT THE BEEPERS AND PAGERS IN.
AND SO IT'LL BE WE'LL HAVE IT IN THE NEXT AGENDA FOR REVIEW.
AND THEN YOU WOULD VOTE ON IT IN AUGUST.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS? IT'S DEFINITELY WILL WOULD BE WILL BE A CULTURE SHIFT.
YOU KNOW THE WHY IS IMPORTANT.
THANK YOU. I THINK THE GENERAL CONSENSUS IS YOU'VE GOT OUR SUPPORT.
OKAY. WE WILL GO AHEAD AND MOVE ON.
KEVIN. OH, MAY I, MAY MAY I? YEAH. DID WE APPROVE THE MINUTES? NO. NO.
SOMEHOW I MANAGED TO SLIP BY THAT.
SO WE CAN BEFORE WE MOVE ON, WE'LL MOVE BACK.
YEAH, I HAVE I HAVE A QUICK REQUEST ON THE MINUTES.
COULD I HAVE THAT TAKEN OUT? BECAUSE I DON'T THINK I DID THAT.
I THINK THAT THAT CAN CERTAINLY BE EDITED.
IT'S ALWAYS INTERESTING BECAUSE THE TYPICAL ROBERT'S RULES OF ORDER THAT EVERYONE IS USED TO MOTIONS TYPICALLY REQUIRE A SECOND, BUT WITH A SMALL BOARD AND SCHOOL BOARD THINGS, THEY AREN'T REQUIRED.
SO IT ALWAYS KIND OF THROWS THINGS OFF, BUT THEY SOMEHOW THAT PULLS OUT OF BOARD DOCS TO MAKE THOSE.
BUT I THINK THAT CAN EASE, LIKE I SAID, EASILY BE CHANGED.
SO WE WILL MOVE BACK TO ITEM 3.01, I GUESS.
[3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES]
I WAS SO EXCITED TO GET ARLENE UP HERE THAT I JUST BOUNCED BY IT.SO IS THERE A MOTION TO ADDRESS THE MINUTES? MOTION TO APPROVE THE MINUTES.
OKAY, SO IT HAS BEEN MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES.
ASSUMING WITH THE CORRECTION THAT PEGGY HAS REQUESTED STUDENTS, I'LL ASK FOR YOUR VOTE FIRST.
ALL IN FAVOR, SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
AYE. ALL OPPOSED? OKAY, SO THE STUDENT ADVISORY VOTE IS TO PASS THE APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES AS CORRECTED.
ELECTED BOARD. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
AYE, AYE. ALL OPPOSED? OKAY, SO THE MINUTES HAVE BEEN APPROVED.
MY APOLOGIES FOR THAT OVERSIGHT.
[8. FOCUS ON STUDENTS]
OR R-3 CIVIC ENGAGEMENT.MY THANKS TO THOSE BOARD MEMBERS THAT DID COMPLETE THE GOOGLE SURVEY FOR THIS MONITORING REPORT.
AND SO THE FLOOR IS OPEN TO DISCUSSION.
[01:46:14]
I DO HAVE A QUESTION.OKAY. SO THIS IS ABOUT CIVIC ENGAGEMENT.
AND YOU KNOW, THE POLICY STATES PARDON MY EYESIGHT.
THEY WON'T EXERCISE SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT, WHICH I THINK CELL PHONE POLICY WOULD CONTRIBUTE TO.
LEADERSHIP WAS A LOCAL COMMUNITY.
AND WE WE DO HAVE A CIVICS REQUIREMENT AS FAR AS LEARNING ABOUT CIVICS.
I DON'T THIS QUESTION WAS ASKED BY NANCY TO ME AS WELL.
SO REALLY, WHEN WE LOOKED BACK AT THE FORMER POLICY FORMER WRITEUPS AND THE CURRENT ONES, AND WHEN THE TEAM MET, IT WAS REALLY ABOUT HOW DO YOU WORK IN A DIVERSE COMMUNITY? HOW ARE YOU ENGAGING WITH PEOPLE? HOW ARE YOU INTERACTING NOW? CIVICS, WHICH HAPPENS ALL DAY LONG THROUGHOUT, IT WASN'T NECESSARILY TIED.
IF THE BOARD WANTS TO SEE THAT, THEN HAVING A DIRECT INDICATOR WOULD NEED TO BE ADDED IN.
BUT IT REALLY DIDN'T LEND ITSELF TO THAT.
SO HOW DO YOU LISTEN TO WHAT SOMEBODY ELSE HAS TO SAY? RESPOND TO IT.
YEAH, I KNOW, BUT I JUST REALIZED IN READING THROUGH THIS POLICY THAT I DIDN'T SEE ANYWHERE IN ANY OF THE ACADEMIC INDICATORS THAT THERE WAS CIVICS EDUCATION AS PART OF THAT.
IT'S JUST PART OF LIKE SOCIAL STUDIES AND HOW THEY WORK IN LEADERSHIP.
THIS I CAN TELL YOU THAT I'VE WATCHED THESE TWO EVEN JUST EVEN THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL, WHEN THEY WERE THINKING ABOUT HOW TO HAVE THIS BIG FUN DAY AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
A LOT OF CIVICS EDUCATION STANDARDS WENT INTO THAT.
SO TEACHERS ARE TEACHING IT ALL THE TIME.
BUT WE COULD PROVIDE EXAMPLES OF THAT GIVEN IF THERE WAS AN INDICATOR TIED TO THIS POLICY.
SO THIS WAS ONE THAT I WAS GOING TO SUGGEST YOU EXAMINE IN AUGUST.
AND IT'S ALMOST ALWAYS INCREDIBLY EMBARRASSING.
AND I JUST DON'T WANT THAT TO BE OUR STUDENTS.
THEY'RE LEARNING. THEY ARE LEARNING THAT IN OUR IN OUR SCHOOLS AND AND NOT JUST IN HIGH SCHOOL.
THERE'S MIDDLE SCHOOL LESSONS ON IT AND THERE'S ELEMENTARY LESSONS ON IT.
I MEAN, I GO TO ASSEMBLIES WHERE YOU SEE STUDENTS PRESENTING BASED ON CIVICS.
IT'S ALSO DEPENDING ON THE TIME OF YEAR, MAYBE THERE'S A HOLIDAY.
AND SO THERE'S DIFFERENT, DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES.
I BELIEVE I SENT THE BOARD ALL THE CIVIC STANDARDS.
DID YOU ALL GET THAT? I GAVE A RESPONSE TO DIRECTOR BUTTON, AND I THINK I BCC'D ALL OF YOU.
I WILL ALSO SAY IN REGARDS TO THAT VIDEO COMMENT, I'VE SEEN A LOT OF VIDEOS ABOUT ADULTS, LIKE GROWN ADULTS BEING ASKED GOVERNMENT AND GEOGRAPHY QUESTIONS IN AMERICA, AND THOSE ARE PRETTY EMBARRASSING.
[01:50:04]
YES THEY ARE, AND THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAUGHT WHILE THEY WERE IN SCHOOL.I MIGHT SURMISE THAT SOMETIMES THOSE VIDEOS, THEY MAY NOT BE REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLES, BUT.
AS FAR AS THIS, I WAS IMPRESSED IN READING THROUGH THE REPORT.
JUST THE THE MASS OF OPPORTUNITIES, MUCH LIKE THE CTE PROGRAM.
YOU KNOW, THERE ARE LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS TO ENGAGE IN COMMUNITY SCHOOL, LOTS OF ACTIVITIES WHERE THEY LEARN, WHERE THEY PUT THOSE THAT CIVICS TRAINING INTO ACTION.
ONE EXAMPLE. AND IT IT'S NOT NECESSARILY IN HERE, BUT I JUST THINK ABOUT SO THE KIWANIS CLUB FERNDALE EVERY YEAR PROVIDES A, A TURKEY DINNER OR A IT'S A LIKE A THANKSGIVING MEAL, BUT WE DO IT IN FEBRUARY.
AND EVERY YEAR, THE LEADERSHIP TEAM FROM EAGLE RIDGE, THE STUDENTS COME AND THEY SPEND TIME AT THE SENIOR CENTER HELPING GREET PEOPLE, YOU KNOW, HELPING THEM SIT, SERVING THEM.
THOSE ARE THE TYPES OF THINGS THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE ENGAGING WITH.
SO I, I APPRECIATE IT'S NOT ABOUT A LESSON, BUT IT'S ABOUT A WAY OF BEING.
AND I DO THINK THIS REPORT GETS TO THAT.
CAN I ASK A TANGENTIAL QUESTION? HEY, KEVIN, DO THEY STILL DO PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE? DO THEY STILL OFFER THAT THROUGH FFA? OH YEAH, THERE STILL ARE THE COMPETITIONS AND SUCH.
IF YOU COME TO THEIR ANY OF THEIR BANQUETS, THEY ARE FRONT AND CENTER MODELING THAT.
THAT'S HOW THEY RUN THE EVEN THE BANQUET.
WITH THAT, I'LL MAKE A MOTION.
TO ADOPT THE MONITORING REPORT FOR RESULTS POLICY.
THREE. CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AS SHOWING REASONABLE PROGRESS.
SO IT HAS BEEN MOVED THAT WE ADOPT RESULTS POLICY OR THE MONITORING REPORT FOR RESULTS POLICY THREE FOR CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AS MAKING REASONABLE PROGRESS. STUDENTS IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
AYE. OPPOSED? OKAY. AND OUR OTHER BOARD MEMBERS.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
SO THANK YOU. OKAY, THAT BRINGS US ON TO ITEMS 8.02 THROUGH 8.04.
THESE ARE THREE POLICIES THAT HAVE BEEN REVISED.
THESE REVISIONS WERE PRESENTED TO THE BOARD LAST MONTH TO GIVE US AND THE COMMUNITY TIME TO READ AND RESPOND TO THE CHANGES, AND THEY'RE HERE BEFORE US TONIGHT TO DISCUSS AND TO ACT UPON.
AND SO THE FIRST ONE IS POLICY 2410.
THAT IS A REVISION OF THE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS.
AND SO ANY DISCUSSION AND OR QUESTIONS IN REGARDS TO THE CHANGES THAT WERE MADE TO THIS POLICY.
I GUESS I HAD A QUESTION ABOUT THE WORDING IF IT WAS A LITTLE CONFUSING.
ON WHERE IT SAYS FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT DIPLOMA WILL SOLELY BE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE OPEN DOORS YOUTH RE-ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM, WILL REQUIRE 24 CREDITS AND WILL EARN A FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT DIPLOMA.
AND THAT. I DON'T KNOW, IT JUST SEEMED LIKE AN AWKWARD SENTENCE TO ME.
AND OKAY, SO THE ONLY WAY TO GET A FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT DIPLOMA WILL BE THROUGH OPEN DOORS.
THERE IS NO OTHER PATH TO GET ONE OF THOSE CORRECT.
[01:55:02]
IT'S PARTLY THE MODELING OFF THE POLICY AS WELL AS PERSONALIZING IT TO OUR NEW RE-ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM.THE STUDENTS THAT WOULD GET THE FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT DIPLOMA LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE WOULD BE THEY WOULD GO THROUGH THE OPEN DOORS OR THE YOUTH RE-ENGAGEMENT ROUTE FOR THAT.
BUT LIKE WE DID TALK ABOUT WE HAVE SOME STUDENTS WHO ARE STILL AGING OUT OF THE PREVIOUS REQUIREMENTS WHERE THEY WERE ALLOWED A 24 CREDIT SCHOOL DISTRICT DIPLOMA OR STATE DIPLOMA WITH THE 24 CREDITS.
BUT THOSE THOSE NUMBERS WILL GET SMALLER AND SMALLER.
AND. YEAH, I JUST WAS WONDERING IF THE WORDING COULD BE A LITTLE CLEARER, THAT'S ALL.
I MEAN, IF THERE IS A WAY TO REWORD IT SO THAT IT WAS.
I WILL SAY THIS WAS ONE OF THOSE, YOU KNOW, WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON THESE POLICIES FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW, GIVEN THE INCONSISTENCY IN OUR PROGRAMS. AND SO THIS WAS THIS HAS BEEN THROUGH MANY, MANY, MANY PEOPLE.
I THINK TRINA'S POINT IS WELL TAKEN THAT WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO ARE CURRENTLY IN A FORMER MODEL.
SO, YOU'RE GOING TO SEE A TRANSITION.
SO, I THINK EVEN IT'S A POLICY THAT WILL CONTINUE TO REVIEW YEARLY AND MAKING SURE THAT IT'S HITTING THE MARK AS WE DEVELOP THE OPEN DOORS RE-ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM ELEVATE THE NUMBER OF CREDITS THAT FVA HAS.
AND THEN JUST OUR HIGH SCHOOL OPTION, WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO HERE IS REALLY PROVIDE A MODEL THAT STUDENTS WHO NEED AN ALTERNATIVE TYPE OF PROGRAM DO NOT HAVE TO LEAVE FERNDALE TO FIND IT, THAT, YOU KNOW, THERE'S NOT ONE PATH TO GETTING TO THE FINISH LINE. THERE'S. BUT, YOU KNOW, SOME STUDENTS, THEY JUST WANT TO GET THEIR GED.
THESE ARE OUR KIDS, AND WE WANT TO WE WANT TO WALK ALONGSIDE THEM AND THEIR FAMILY ALL THE WAY.
I THINK I'M SEEING THE QUESTION OR WHERE IT SAYS THAT IT WILL SOLELY BE AVAILABLE.
IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYBODY HAS TO GO THROUGH THE OPEN DOORS.
I'M WONDERING IF THAT SOLELY SHOULD ALSO BE AVAILABLE.
IT SOLELY SHOULD BE REPLACED BY ALSO.
BUT ISN'T IT A DIFFERENT DIPLOMA BECAUSE IT SAYS FERNDALE HIGH SCHOOL OTHERWISE? AND THEN IT'S THAT SCHOOL ONE FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
OKAY. AND THAT MAY BE THE DIFFERENCE THERE.
SO THE THE FIRST DIPLOMA THAT IT'S TALKING ABOUT IS A FERNDALE HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA.
THE OTHER IS A FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
YES. A STUDENT WHO GOES THROUGH OPEN DOORS WILL GET A DISTRICT DIPLOMA.
STUDENTS WHO GO THROUGH OUR HIGH SCHOOL COURSEWORK WILL GET A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA.
AND THERE WAS ANOTHER SCHOOL IN THERE THAT I HAD NEVER HEARD OF.
WHAT WAS THAT ONE CLEAR VIEW? NO, ACTUALLY, WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY IS THE WAY YOU JUST WORDED THAT WAS PERFECTLY CLEAR.
I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT YOU SAID, SO.
I'LL LOOK AT IT WITH THE TEAM.
BUT WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS BE ABLE TO START ENROLLING STUDENTS IN THESE PROGRAMS. AND SO IF THE BOARD IS WILLING TO ADOPT THESE TONIGHT THEN I WILL ASK THE TEAM TO LOOK AT IT AGAIN, AND, AND WE CAN WORDSMITH IT.
OKAY. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THE REVISIONS? SEEING NONE. THE CHAIR WILL GO AHEAD AND PUT FORTH THAT WE ADOPT THE REVISIONS TO POLICY 2410 THE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS.
STUDENTS, ALL IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING I, I OPPOSED.
OKAY. AND ELECTED BOARD MEMBERS.
ALL IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
ALL OPPOSED? OKAY, SO THE REVISIONS TO POLICY 2410 HAVE BEEN ADOPTED.
[02:00:01]
THAT BRINGS US ON TO POLICY 2418 WAIVER OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION CREDITS.AND AGAIN THE FLOOR IS OPEN TO DISCUSSION.
THE FAMILY PARTNERS. HEY, WE HAD LOTS OF GROUPS IN THE DAY.
QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? OKAY, I MEAN, I READ IT EARLIER, IT LOOKS PRETTY SOLID.
SO SEEING NO COMMENTS COMING FORTH, I'LL GO AHEAD AGAIN AND PUT FORTH THAT WE ADOPT THE REVISIONS TO POLICY 2418, THE WAIVER OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION CREDITS.
SO STUDENTS ALL IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
ALL IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
SO WE HAVE ALSO ADOPTED THE REVISIONS TO POLICY 2418, THE WAIVER OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION CREDITS.
AND SO WE'LL MOVE ON TO TO ACTING ON THE REVISIONS TO POLICY.
2255 THE ALTERNATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE COURSES.
DEFINITELY SEEMS LIKE A THEME WITHIN ALL THESE REVISIONS.
AND SO FLOOR IS OPEN TO ANY DISCUSSION ON THIS, THESE POLICY REVISIONS.
AND AGAIN, WHILE YOU GUYS ARE THINKING A SHOUT OUT TO EVELYN FOR HER WORK ON PUTTING THESE IN A FORMAT THAT IS MUCH EASIER THAN THE LAST TIME THAT WE REVIEWED THESE.
OKAY. ANY COMMENTS? THEN SEEING NONE, I WILL AGAIN PUT FORTH THAT WE ADOPT A QUICK QUESTION.
SORRY, IT'S JUST A QUICK QUESTION.
YEAH. WHEN I WAS READING THIS EARLIER, WHEN DO WHEN DOES THE REPORT HAPPEN TO THE BOARD NORMALLY.
WHAT DOES THAT HAPPEN. SO IT DID SAY THAT THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICIALS.
RESPONSIBLE FOR OVERSEEING EACH COURSE WILL REPORT AT LEAST ANNUALLY TO THE BOARD.
SO I WAS JUST THINKING, WHEN DOES THAT HAPPEN? THAT MODEL HAS NOT BEEN PUT IN PLACE.
SO IT'S NOT NECESSARILY A FORMAL PROCESS.
I THINK WE ALSO DIDN'T HAVE A STRATEGIC PLAN.
AND SO THERE WASN'T NECESSARILY ALIGNMENT AMONGST SOME OF THE PROGRAMS. SO THAT'S ONE OF THE PIECES.
YOU'RE PART OF THE EVOLVING GETTING BETTER PLAN.
THANK YOU. CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT.
OKAY. ANY OTHER COMMENTS? MY APOLOGIES FOR JUMPING THE GUN THERE.
OKAY, SO SEEING NONE AGAIN, I'LL PUT FORTH THAT WE ADOPT THE REVISIONS TO POLICY.
2255 ALTERNATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE COURSES.
STUDENTS. ALL IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE, I OPPOSED OKAY.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING I, I, I OPPOSED.
OKAY, SO THAT BRINGS US DOWN TO THE DISCUSSION OF.
[02:05:04]
THE SUPERINTENDENT. SUPERINTENDENT CONTRACT WHICH WAS PULLED OFF OF THE CONSENT AGENDA.THE SUPERINTENDENT'S CONTRACT IS A WITHIN THE CONTRACT IT SAYS THAT IT WILL BE REVIEWED.
AND I DON'T HAVE THE LANGUAGE RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME, I APOLOGIZE.
BUT WE DO THAT WITHIN JUNE AND WE RATIFY IT BY THE END OF JUNE, SO WE HAVE IT UP FOR DISCUSSION.
THE FOR THOSE THAT ARE IN THE AUDIENCE OR WATCHING ONLINE, THE CONTRACT IS ON BOARD DOCS.
AND SO IT'S BEEN THERE FOR THE BOARD TO REVIEW AND TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT.
AND SO AT THIS POINT IT'S UP FOR DISCUSSION.
BUT IF ANYONE WANTS TO READ THE PARTICULARS OF IT, IT IS THERE AS WELL.
SO QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? YEAH, I DID HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS.
SO ONE ONE OF THE PARTS IN THIS WAS A CHANGE FROM THE, THE PREVIOUS CONTRACT TIES, THE INFLATIONARY INCREASE TO THE PRINCIPAL'S INCREASE.
WHY WHY THAT PARTICULAR CHOICE? AND AND YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT THAT INCREASE IS GOING TO BE FOR THIS FOR THIS YEAR.
THE THAT'S ACTUALLY BEEN PAST PRACTICE.
AND PREVIOUS SUPERINTENDENT HAD THAT IN THEIR CONTRACT.
SO OTHER ADMINISTRATORS KIND OF THE PRINCIPALS GROUP DRIVES THE, THE.
THE THE SUPERINTENDENT IS THE ADMINISTRATOR.
SO IT'S SAME AS ALL THE OTHER ADMINISTRATORS IN THE DISTRICT.
OKAY. AND NO, WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT THAT IS YET.
AND YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT IS YET.
OKAY. SO I HAD A QUESTION ABOUT THIS BECAUSE I TALKED TO KRISTI ABOUT IT EARLIER.
SO THAT KIND OF THAT MAKES IT FEEL AS THOUGH IT'S AT ODDS WITH.
SO IS THIS SOMETHING THAT WE NEED TO LOOK AT REMOVING FROM THE CONTRACT IN THE FUTURE SO THAT IT DOESN'T, YOU KNOW, PUT PUT US IN AN AWKWARD SITUATION REGARDING HAVING HER AT A MEETING WHERE WE'RE DISCUSSING, YOU KNOW, COMPENSATION OR OR PERFORMANCE.
SO I CAN SHARE WHAT I SHARE WITH PEGGY EARLIER.
BECAUSE WE'RE COHERENT GOVERNANCE EVERY MONTH I'M BEING EVALUATED.
THE OTHER PIECE TO THAT I FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT AND, YOU KNOW, IF IF THERE WERE CONCERNS WITH MY PERFORMANCE I WOULD HOPE YOU WOULD SHARE THOSE WITH ME OR SOMEONE WOULD COME DIRECTLY. BUT I ALSO I'M THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE PUBLIC.
AND SO I BELIEVE IT'S IMPORTANT THAT THE PUBLIC HEAR WHAT YOU FEEL.
I'M DOING WELL AS WELL AS AREAS I NEED TO GROW AND LEARN AND REPRESENT THIS DISTRICT.
AND WHEN I GOT HERE, ONE OF THE QUESTIONS I ASKED OF THE BOARD WAS, WHAT DID YOU WHAT WERE YOU LOOKING FOR IN A SUPERINTENDENT? AND I RECALL THE BOARD SAYING, SOMEONE WHO UNIFIES THE COMMUNITY BUT ALSO TRANSPARENT.
AND, YOU KNOW, I HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE.
I'M GOING TO OWN WHAT I DO WELL, BUT I'M GOING TO REALLY OWN WHAT I DON'T DO WELL, TOO.
AND SO I'M, I ACTUALLY WHEN KEVIN AND I MET, I ASKED HIM TO DO MY EVALUATION IN PUBLIC AND TO TALK ABOUT THE CONTRACT IN PUBLIC. IT'S A IT'S A, YOU KNOW, IT'S A IT'S THERE FOR ANYONE TO SEE.
SO HAVING NOT HAVING ME IN THE ROOM I DID HIRE LEGAL COUNSEL.
I DON'T USE THE DISTRICT LAWYER TO LOOK AT THE CONTRACT FOR MYSELF.
I AM PAID WELL THAT IT'S A STRONG CONTRACT.
AND SO I JUST WANTED TO PUT THAT OUT THERE.
THAT'S WHAT I HAD SHARED WITH PEGGY EARLIER.
SO I DO HAVE SOME OTHER QUESTIONS AND I'M SORRY TO BE BRINGING THESE HERE, BUT THIS HAS BEEN A REALLY HECTIC WEEK ACTUALLY LAST TWO WEEKS AND THERE WAS A LOT ON THIS AGENDA.
[02:10:03]
WELL, WHILE YOU'RE MOVING ON TO THAT NEXT, I I'LL JUST COMMENT TOO, BECAUSE MARK AND I ORIGINALLY LOOKED AT THE THE CHANGES THAT WERE SUGGESTED TO THE CONTRACT BY KRISTI AND HER LEGAL COUNSEL.AND THEN AFTER WE HAD EVALUATED THOSE RAN THOSE BY SAM, PART OF MY ASSESSMENT OF THAT LINE AND KIND OF MY BUSINESS DEALING WITH DIFFERENT CONTRACTS HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE CONTRACT BECOMES WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE TWO PARTIES AREN'T GETTING ALONG AND AND EVERYTHING HAS TO BE BY THE LETTER OF THE LAW.
ANY CONTRACT CAN BE AMENDED, ADJUSTED WHEN THE PARTIES ARE MUTUALLY AGREED UPON IT.
AND I LOOK AT, YOU KNOW, THERE'S POTENTIAL.
OKAY. WE COULD TAKE THAT STATEMENT OUT.
YOU KNOW. SO I THINK THAT THAT IS MY REASONING, YOU KNOW, FOR LEAVING IT IN THERE.
OKAY. SO ANOTHER, ANOTHER CHANGE THAT WAS MADE INVOLVED THE TRAVEL.
AND THEY INSERTED THE WORDS WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF THE NORTHWEST ISD.
YOU KNOW, 189 FOR, FOR CAR TRAVEL.
IS THAT SO? YOU CAN'T DRIVE ANYWHERE OUTSIDE OF THE ISD, AND B YOU'D HAVE TO GO THROUGH A DIFFERENT REIMBURSEMENT PROCESS.
I DON'T CURRENTLY GET THE, THE ALL THE TRAVEL I DO WITHIN ISD ONE.
ACTUALLY ALL THE TRAVEL I DO NOW IS I DON'T GET REIMBURSED FOR MILEAGE.
I GET THIS. SO IF I DRIVE TO SPOKANE FOR THE WASEDA CONFERENCE, I COULD NOT GAIN REIMBURSEMENT.
AND SO THAT'S JUST ALL IN MY CONTRACT.
IT'S IT'S THE IT'S JUST A CERTAIN AMOUNT PER MONTH.
YEAH. YEAH. NO, I JUST WAS WONDERING WHY THEY PUT THAT IN THERE.
BECAUSE IT WASN'T IN THERE BEFORE I MEAN OKAY.
YEAH. AND THAT WE FELT IN, IN LOOKING AT THE OPTIONS SEEMED LIKE A REASONABLE COMPROMISE AS OPPOSED TO PUTTING EVERYTHING ON MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT.
AND SO WITHIN THE DISTRICT OR WITHIN ESD 189, IT'S COVERED BY THE MONTHLY STIPEND.
OUTSIDE OF THAT, THEN THERE'S REIMBURSEMENT.
OKAY. AND THEN LET'S SEE ON ITEM F IT SAYS THAT WE WILL PAY FOR SUPERINTENDENT DUES TO BE, YOU KNOW, PART OF WARSAW AND THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AND IT SAYS AND OTHER APPROPRIATE PROFESSIONAL ADMINISTRATIVE ORGANIZATIONS AS AGREED BY THE PARTIES.
SO DOES THAT MEAN IF SHE WANTS TO JOIN SOME OTHER PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION, SHE'D HAVE TO COME TO US AND SAY, HEY, YOU KNOW, I WANT TO JOIN THIS AND WOULD YOU PAY THE DUES? OKAY.
THERE WAS THE THE SECTION THAT WAS REMOVED ON WHERE WAS IT? THERE RENUMBERED SOME STUFF.
THERE WAS A PART IN THE PREVIOUS ONE ON ETHICAL REQUIREMENTS AND THAT WAS REMOVED.
OR WHAT'S THE EXPLANATION FOR REMOVING THAT PIECE? I MEAN, WHY WAS IT THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE AND THEN WHY WAS IT REMOVED? WHICH. LIKE NUMBER 12 WAS A CHANGE TO NUMBER 12.
YEAH, IT WAS 13 THAT THAT WHOLE BIG SECTION ON.
YOU SEE WHICH ONE I'M TALKING ABOUT? YEAH, THE THE PART OF THAT SECTION.
I DON'T REMEMBER, AND I APOLOGIZE.
I DON'T REMEMBER ALL OF WHAT SAM HAD TO SAY, BUT SAM'S INPUT AS FAR AS TAKING THAT OUT.
AND I DON'T KNOW IF YOU REMEMBER MARK.
[02:15:01]
BUT IT HE DIDN'T FEEL THAT THAT WAS ANYTHING THAT WAS OF CONCERN BECAUSE IT WAS BASICALLY DUPLICATION OF LANGUAGE ELSEWHERE IN THE CONTRACT THAT THE THE SUPERINTENDENT WAS GOING TO FULFILLING THE THE CONTRACT AND THE ETHICS WERE COVERED, THAT IF THERE WERE VIOLATIONS, IT WAS GOING TO BE HIT ELSEWHERE.I JUST, YOU KNOW, THOSE WERE THE THOSE ARE THE QUESTIONS THAT I HAD.
SO THANK YOU FOR ANSWERING THEM.
THAT IS PART OF WHY WE HAVE IT AND WE HAVE THE REVIEW OF IT.
IF NOT, THEN I WILL PUT FORTH THAT WE VOTE TO APPROVE THE CONTRACT FOR SUPERINTENDENT DOMINGUEZ.
AND THIS ONE YOU GUYS DON'T VOTE ON.
SO. OKAY, SO ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
AYE AYE. ALL OPPOSED? OKAY. SO THE CONTRACT IS APPROVED.
OKAY, THAT BRINGS US ON TO THE CONSENT AGENDAS, BOTH THE SUPERINTENDENT AND THE BOARD.
[9. SUPERINTENDENT CONSENT AGENDA [GC-2.4]]
[10. BOARD CONSENT AGENDA [GC-2.4]]
CONSENT AGENDAS.THESE ARE A GROUP OF ROUTINE ITEMS THAT ARE PRESENTED TO THE BOARD AHEAD OF TIME FOR THEIR REVIEW.
IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONS THAT THEY CAN LOOK AT THOSE AND ASK QUESTIONS GET CLARIFICATION.
THE OPMA ALLOWS US TO VOTE ON THESE ITEMS AS IN ONE MOTION, AS OPPOSED TO SEPARATELY ON EACH INDIVIDUAL ITEM AS A TIME SAVINGS AND EXPEDIENCE PROCESS.
IT'S PART OF TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA.
THE BOARD WILL BE RECEIVING THE MONITORING REPORT FOR RESULTS POLICY 2.6 TO 2.9.
THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS ARTS, HEALTH AND PE ELECTIVES AND WORLD LANGUAGE.
THERE ARE ALSO TWO POLICY REVISIONS ON THE CONSENT AGENDA.
ANY POLICY THAT HAS SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IMPACTING THE DISTRICT ARE BEING PRESENTED TO THE BOARD AT A REGULAR MEETING AND SCHEDULED FOR DISCUSSION AND ACTION AT THE NEXT REGULAR BOARD MEETING. THIS ALLOWS THE BOARD AND PUBLIC TIME TO REVIEW THE PROPOSED POLICY CHANGES.
WE INVITE THE PUBLIC TO REVIEW THESE POLICY CHANGES AND LET US KNOW HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT THE PROPOSED CHANGES, EITHER PRIOR TO THE NEXT MEETING OR DURING THE PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD. THOSE POLICIES WITH MINOR CHANGES TYPICALLY UPDATING LEGAL REFERENCES OR MINOR LANGUAGE CHANGES WITHIN THE DOCUMENTS THAT DO NOT AFFECT THE INTENT OR IMPACT OF THE POLICY WILL BE ADDRESSED AND ADOPTED VIA THE CONSENT AGENDA.
OH, AND I'LL ALSO MENTION THAT ITEMS ON THE CONSENT AGENDA.
THAT DOES NOT PRECLUDE DISCUSSING THEM.
IT JUST IS A MATTER OF THEY'RE VOTED ON AS A GROUP OF ITEMS. SO IS THERE ANY QUESTIONS OR DISCUSSION IN REGARDS TO ANYTHING ON EITHER OF THE CONSENT AGENDAS? SORRY. I HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS.
OKAY, SO FOR THE TRAVEL REQUEST, THERE WASN'T AN ATTACHMENT FOR THE FIRST ONE.
SO IS THERE MORE INFORMATION ON THAT IN TERMS OF, LIKE, THE OTHERS CONTAINED, YOU KNOW? DETAILS. HEY, PEGGY.
THIS GROUP OF TRAVEL REQUESTS, FOUR OF THEM CAME IN THE FORM OF A MEMO LIKE THEY USED TO COME.
AND I THOUGHT YOU WANTED THAT INFORMATION, SO I INCLUDED IT.
THEY ALSO DO THE NEW INFORMED K 12 TRAVEL FIELD TRIP REQUEST FORM AS WELL.
SO THAT ONE JUST DID THE NEW PROCESS.
DID THE NEW. SO THAT'S WHAT THE NEW PROCESS LOOKS LIKE.
I WASN'T SURE I HADN'T SEEN IT.
THANK YOU. AND THEN THERE WAS THE RENEW THE MEMBERSHIP WITH WIAA. I HAD A QUESTION.
[02:20:03]
WHY WAS VISTA MIDDLE SCHOOL NOT INCLUDED IN THE PAST? WHY IS IT NOW? THAT WOULD BE ONE OF THOSE QUESTIONS IF I DON'T PUT THAT FORWARD.SO IF I HAD HAD THAT EARLIER, I COULD HAVE CONTACTED SOMEBODY TO GET THAT INFORMATION.
SO I'LL HAVE TO DO THAT AT ANOTHER TIME.
HAVE ANOTHER ANOTHER QUESTION.
AND THEN THE OTHER, OTHER THING IS, I'VE LEARNED THAT APPARENTLY WE CAN HAVE REPRESENTATION AT WIAA AND AND, AND WEIGH IN ON THEIR POLICIES AND BASED ON, YOU KNOW, THE WHAT'S THE WORD I'M LOOKING FOR? KEVIN, HELP ME OUT. WHAT'S THE WORD? I'M LOOKING FOR THE LEAGUE.
THANK YOU. YOU KNOW, IT'S A WEIGHTED VOTING KIND OF SITUATION, AND SO I WAS JUST WONDERING, WHAT IS OUR OUR STATUS AS FAR AS HAVING ANY REPRESENTATION THERE? WE HAVE OUR, OUR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, ERIC TRIPP, WHO ATTENDS THAT AND THEN HE COMES BACK AND GETS STAKEHOLDER INPUT IF THERE'S A VOTE, FOR EXAMPLE, THIS YEAR THERE WAS CONVERSATION ABOUT WHAT LEVEL WE SHOULD BE IN.
SO HE WAS COMING BACK AND ASKING US THOSE QUESTIONS.
I THINK I'VE NEVER WORKED IN A DISTRICT WHERE THEY'VE HAD A BOARD REP ON THAT.
SO I THINK THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING I WOULD SUGGEST YOU DO MORE LEARNING ABOUT WHAT THAT COMMITMENT LOOKS LIKE, AND THEN PUT IT FORWARD AS AN AGENDA ITEM TO VOTE ON IF YOU WANT TO APPOINT SOMEBODY FOR THAT.
OKAY. SO CAN WE PUT THAT ON THE AGENDA FOR NEXT MONTH AS A DISCUSSION ITEM? I'LL HAVE CHRIS PUT THAT IN THE NOTES.
THANK YOU. SO ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS IN REGARDS TO ITEMS ON THE CONSENT AGENDAS? OKAY. LET'S SEE IS THE, THE SO THE THE CAPABLE, THE HIGHLY CAPABLE PROGRAM PLAN. I HAD A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS ON THAT.
IS THERE ARE THERE HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE CURRENTLY INVOLVED, DO YOU KNOW, AND IS THERE A LIMIT ON HOW MANY STUDENTS CAN BE IDENTIFIED AND SERVED AS HIGHLY CAPABLE? BECAUSE THERE'S NOT A LIMIT.
BUT I CANNOT ANSWER THAT QUESTION.
IT'S I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO ALL OF THAT.
ONE, ONE POINT OF CONTACT WITH THE HIGHLY CAPABLE PROGRAM.
THIS WAS ALSO A CONVERSATION I HAD WITH OUR TWO STUDENTS, AS PREVIOUS STUDENTS IN THE PROGRAM.
THAT IS AN AREA THAT WE NEED TO EXPLORE AND DO AN AUDIT ON NEXT YEAR AND AN ADVISORY.
SO THEY'RE GOING TO BE A FULL PROCESS.
SO RIGHT NOW I COULD ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS AS TO WHAT THE PROGRAM LOOKS LIKE TODAY.
BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN REVIEWED IN A VERY LONG TIME.
I WOULDN'T SAY THAT WE ARE IN THE MOST COMPLIANT PLACE.
AND SO WE NEED TO DO A DEEP DIVE INTO THE HIGHLY CAPABLE PROGRAM NEXT YEAR.
DON CHRISTIANA, PRINCIPAL AT CASCADIA ELEMENTARY, WILL BE HELPING LEAD THAT WORK.
AND THEN SO THERE'LL BE THERE'LL BE APPLICATIONS TO BE INVOLVED.
I'LL BE ASKING OUR TWO STUDENTS HERE TO BE TO TAKE A LEADERSHIP ROLE IN THAT PROCESS.
BUT WE HAVE SOME WORK TO DO ON THAT.
BY NEXT YEAR, YOU MEAN THIS COMING SCHOOL YEAR, RIGHT? YEAH. I'M STILL ON LAST YEAR.
IT TAKES A WHILE. IT'S SORT OF LIKE WHEN YOU'RE WRITING CHECKS IN THE NEW YEAR.
I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE IT WOULDN'T BE WITHOUT ME.
IT'S WITH YOU. YOUR SENIOR YEAR.
WE ARE GOING TO BE EVALUATING IT.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? OKAY. IT'S NOT MY FAULT.
OKAY. THE I WAS WONDERING, WITH THE CTE DUAL CREDIT AGREEMENT THING. I WAS BECAUSE WHEN I SEE THESE, SINCE THEY'RE, YOU KNOW, THEY'RE RENEWED ANNUALLY, I GO AND FIND THE PREVIOUS ONE AND COMPARE AND SEE WHAT'S CHANGED.
[02:25:09]
RIGHT. AND BUT I COULDN'T FIND 2023, 2024 FOR THIS ONE.AND SO AND IT SAYS HERE THIS AGREEMENT WILL BE REVIEWED REGULARLY AND APPROVED ANNUALLY.
WHERE MIGHT I FIND IT? AND BELIEVE ME, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO GET THAT FOR YOU.
I THINK IT'S IT'S GOOD EVEN FOR OUR PUBLIC TO KNOW THAT THE CONSENT AGENDA ITEMS. CHRIS AND YOU, YOU GOT THIS EMAIL.
CHRIS SENDS OUT AN EMAIL TO THE ENTIRE DISTRICT AND SAYS, WHAT DO YOU NEED TO GO ON THE AGENDA TO GET APPROVED BY THE BOARD? BECAUSE ALL OF THESE THINGS ARE PART OF POLICIES.
AND SO I, I'M LOOKING AT THE CONSENT AGENDA, AND I CAN TELL YOU ABOUT TEN INDIVIDUALS I WOULD NEED TO TALK TO IN ORDER TO GET THE ANSWERS TO ALL OF THESE THINGS. AND SO I'M HAPPY TO DO THAT.
SO AS SOON AS CHRIS GETS THOSE ITEMS, THEY'RE GOING ON THERE.
SO IF YOU GO INTO THE DRAFT AGENDA, YOU CAN SEE IT THE WHOLE TIME.
SO PLEASE KNOW THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL IT GOES PUBLIC.
SO, A LOT OF THESE ITEMS GO IN THERE.
SO, I'M HAPPY TO GET ANY OF THOSE QUESTIONS TO YOU.
UNLESS ANYONE ON MY TEAM I DON'T THINK ANY OF THEM HAVE THAT FROM LAST YEAR.
WELL, I JUST FIGURED I COULD, YOU KNOW, DO THE SEARCH AT BOARDDOCS.
AND THAT DIDN'T WORK, I MEAN THAT.
OKAY. NOT HEARING ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, OR THAT THEN THE CHAIR WILL MOVE THAT.
WE ADOPT BOTH THE SUPERINTENDENT AND BOARD CONSENT AGENDAS AS PRESENTED.
THE ELECTED BOARD MEMBERS SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
[11. SHARING [GC-7.E}]
THAT THEN BRINGS US ON TO ITEM 11.01, WHICH IS BOARD MEMBER SHARING, AND I WILL GO AHEAD AND START.PEGGY. WELL, I DID WANT TO EXPLAIN WHY I PUT THE COMMITTEE THING ON THE ON THE BOARD CONSENT AGENDA. I JUST FELT LIKE, OKAY, SINCE THE AUDIT COMMITTEE WAS CREATED AND THERE IS NOTHING IN THERE THAT THAT DESIGNATES, YOU KNOW, A COMMITTEE THAT CONSISTS OF JUST BOARD MEMBERS, I FELT LIKE IT NEEDED TO HAVE THAT CATEGORY IN THERE.
AND TO DISTINGUISH IT FROM OTHER, OTHER TYPES OF BOARDS THAT WE MIGHT, MIGHT HAVE.
THE IDEA BEING THAT YOU KNOW, IF WE'RE REQUIRED TO HAVE THAT FOR THE AUDIT COMMITTEE, THIS IS A [INAUDIBLE], SAY THEN YOU KNOW, IF WE WANTED TO CREATE ANY OTHER SIMILAR ONES FOR LIMITED TIME OR WHATEVER, YOU KNOW, JUST TO SEND 1 OR 2 BOARD MEMBERS SEARCHING FOR INFORMATION ON SOMETHING, THEN IT MIGHT BE A, YOU KNOW, AN EASY WAY TO CREATE A TEMPORARY COMMITTEE THAT, YOU KNOW, WOULDN'T TIE UP ANY STAFF TIME, BUT COULD STILL GO AND FIND INFORMATION THAT MIGHT, MIGHT BE USEFUL TO THE BOARD.
SO THAT'S WHY I PUT IT TOGETHER THE WAY THAT I DID.
WELL, I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME HARLEEN TO THE BOARD.
WELCOME. THANKS FOR BEING HERE.
OTHER THAN THAT. THERE'S NOT A WHOLE LOT TO SAY.
I APPRECIATED THE LITTLE DEMONSTRATION THAT JAMIE HAD PUT ON EARLIER TO GIVE THE PUBLIC SOME INSIGHT ON KIND OF WHAT'S GOING ON BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM.
I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THE NEW SOFTWARE THEY CHOOSE.
I DID MENTION TO JAMIE, AND I DON'T KNOW, I'M SURE IT GOT FORWARDED ABOUT WORKING ON A LONG-TERM BUSINESS PLAN AS FAR AS PULLING OUT THE INFORMATION AND PRIORITIZING THE WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IN THE
[02:30:09]
FUTURE SO THAT WE HAVE REASONABLE NUMBERS TO WORK WITH IN THE FUTURE.AS FAR AS YOU KNOW, MONEY'S AVAILABLE AND MONEY THAT WE CAN BUDGET FOR THE FUTURE.
I THINK EVERYBODY AGREES, YOU KNOW, IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN OVERNIGHT.
IT'S GOING TO BE OVER A COURSE OF TIME BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT.
SO ANYWAY YEAH, IT WAS A GOOD MEETING WITH JAMIE.
I APPRECIATED THAT AND BEING INVITED AND APPRECIATED THE OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE SOME INPUT ON THAT.
AND JUST TO THE BOARD, IF ANYBODY HAS ANY QUESTIONS, I'D BE MORE THAN OPEN TO TRY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE.
THAT WAS NICE TO SEE THAT PRESENTATION.
IT'S A DAUNTING LOOKING THING.
YEAH. THREE QUICK ITEMS. FIRST. HARLEEN, WELCOME.
I'M SO EXCITED FOR GABBY AND HARLEEN.
AND LOOKING FORWARD TO WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE TABLE AND HOW YOU CAN INFLUENCE AND BE AN ADVOCATE FOR, FOR THOSE THAT YOU REPRESENT. SO REALLY EXCITED FOR VERY STRONG TO YOUNG LADIES AND THEN I SAY IT IN THE MOST POSITIVE WAY.
SO, I'M REALLY, REALLY EXCITED.
I'M APPRECIATIVE OF THE CELL PHONE DISCUSSION THAT WE HAD.
THIS IS A LONG PROCESS, I THINK, BUT IT IS A PROCESS THAT I WANT TO SUPPORT AND WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT WE DO A THOROUGH REVIEW AND EXERCISE FOR THE BENEFIT OF THOSE THAT WE THAT WE WORK FOR, RIGHT.
THE KIDS AND I, AS WE WERE TALKING ABOUT REVIEWING THE CONTRACT, AND I WOULD BE SILLY IF I DON'T RECOGNIZE THAT WE DO HAVE A GREAT LEADER. AND I'M SO GRATEFUL FOR KRISTI FOR HER EFFORTS FOR HER ABILITY TO INTERACT WITH, WITH THOSE AROUND HER.
I'M VERY APPRECIATIVE OF HAVING HER IN OUR DISTRICT.
I THINK WE'RE FULLY WE'RE VERY BLESSED TO HAVE KRISTI.
SO, I JUST WANTED TO MAKE THAT PUBLIC THAT I APPRECIATE YOUR TONE, YOUR MESSAGING AND AS A BOARD, I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING TOGETHER SO THAT WE CAN HELP THOSE KIDS IN THEIR FORMATIVE YEARS.
SO NOTHING BIG FOR ME TO SHARE.
JUST A COUPLE OF IMPORTANT ITEMS. ONE, PLEASE REMEMBER THAT OUR JULY MEETING IS TRADITIONALLY HAWAIIAN THEMED.
IF WE CAN'T BE IN HAWAII, WE'LL.
YEAH. SO HAWAIIAN T SHIRTS, LEIS, YOU NAME IT.
YOU KNOW, ANY WELL, WITHIN REASON, ANYTHING GOES.
ANYWAY, THE OTHER IS JUST A REMINDER OF AUGUST 3RD FOR OUR RETREAT.
THERE WILL BE MORE DETAILS COMING OUT ON THAT AS WE GET CLOSER, PLEASE.
AS ALWAYS, IF THERE ARE ITEMS THAT YOU WANT ON OUR UPCOMING JULY MEETING AGENDA OR ITEMS FOR THAT AUGUST 3RD RETREAT, PLEASE LET ME KNOW SO THAT WE CAN START PLANNING THAT.
I JUST MY SUSPICION IS WE'RE GOING TO HAVE MORE ITEMS THAN WE HAVE.
RETREAT. BUT THAT JUST MEANS WE NEED TO HAVE ANOTHER ONE.
SO WITH THAT SAID, I WILL TURN THINGS OVER TO STEVE, WHO IS IN CHARGE OF TONIGHT'S MEETING
[12. MEETING EVALUATION SURVEY]
EVALUATION. WONDERFUL.SO, I'LL TELL YOU HOW I'M GOING TO DO THIS IS I FEEL LIKE.
ANYTIME YOU EVALUATE ANYTHING, THERE'S ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.
SO, I'M GOING TO TELL EVERYBODY HONESTLY THAT YOU'RE NOT GETTING FORCED TODAY OKAY.
IF YOU WANT ME TO ITEMIZE AND GO THROUGH THE AGENDA ON HERE, I CAN DO THAT.
[02:35:01]
THE AGENDA WAS WELL PLANNED, AND THE BOARD WAS WELL PREPARED.THREE BOARD MEMBERS DID NOT INTERRUPT EACH OTHER.
I FELT THEY DID A GOOD JOB OF THAT.
BOARD MEMBERS DID NOT ENGAGE IN SIDE CONVERSATIONS.
ACTUALLY, SOME OF THESE ARE FOURS, BUT LIKE I SAID, I ALREADY CONFESSED.
BOARD MEMBERS DID NOT PLAY WITH THE.
AND SO, THE BOARD MEMBERS SUPPORTED THE PRESIDENT'S EFFORTS TO FACILITATE AN ORDERLY MEETING.
YEAH. ALL BOARD MEMBERS CONTRIBUTED TO THE MEETING.
YEP, I FELT THAT WAS EVERYBODY CONTRIBUTED.
BOARD MEMBERS PRACTICE RESPECTFUL BODY LANGUAGE.
SO, MY OVERALL MARKS FOR THE DAY IS A THREE.
MAY I MAKE ONE MORE REMARK? BECAUSE I FORGOT TO SAY IT.
A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, I GOT A CHANCE TO GO TO THE WOMEN IN TIMBER TOUR, WHICH WAS WONDERFUL.
I'VE NEVER BEEN ON THAT BEFORE.
AND SO, IF ANY OF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN ON THAT BEFORE, THE NEXT TIME IT ROLLS AROUND, TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY BECAUSE YOU GET TO GO OUT AND SEE WHAT YOU KNOW, WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE TO, TO ACTUALLY GO OUT AND CUT DOWN TREES AND STRIP THE BRANCHES AND BARK OFF.
AND, YOU KNOW, AND THEN THEY TEACH YOU ABOUT SILVICULTURE AND FIRE MANAGEMENT AND OTHER FUN THINGS.
SO AND PLUS THEY GIVE YOU A NICE SANDWICH AND WONDERFUL SCENERY.
SO IT WAS IT WAS A GREAT TIME AND I'M GRATEFUL THAT I GOT TO HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE.
COOL. AND THANK YOU FOR THAT ENDORSEMENT.
AND STEVE, I CAN RELATE BECAUSE THERE'S ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.
I'M ONE OF THOSE THAT ALWAYS HAS TROUBLE WITH THE HIGH NUMBER, SO I'M ALL THERE WITH YOU TO DO IT.
NEXT, I'M GOING TO GET ALL FOURS.
THERE'RE ALWAYS THOSE PEOPLE THAT INFLATE THE GRADING SCALE.
OH GREAT. WE'RE GOING TO SPEND HALF OUR RETREAT DISCUSSING THREES VERSUS FOURS.
OKAY. WELL THAT DOES BRING US TO THE END OF THE AGENDA.
CHRIS AND I HAD AN INTERESTING CONVERSATION EMAIL CONVERSATION EARLIER BECAUSE AS I WAS READING THE MINUTES, IT SAID THAT I THERE WAS A MOTION TO ADJOURN THE MEETING. AND I'M LIKE, DO I NEED TO ADJOURN THE MEETING OR HAVE A MOTION OR WE'RE AT THE END OF THE AGENDA? WHAT IF NO ONE MAKES A MOTION? SO, UNLESS THERE'S ANYONE THAT HAS ANY OBJECTIONS, I'M JUST GOING TO GO AHEAD AND ADJOURN THE MEETING.
AND THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING AND SEE YOU NEXT MONTH.
