[1. CONVENE]
[00:00:07]
>> GOOD EVENING, AND WELCOME TO THE SPECIAL SESSION OF THE FERNDALE SCHOOL BOARD.
THANK YOU FOR JOINING US WHETHER LIVE OR ONLINE.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS SPECIAL MEETING IS TO INTERVIEW OUR CANDIDATES FOR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE SCHOOL BOARD, AND TO SUBSEQUENTLY SELECT A STUDENT TO SERVE IN THAT CAPACITY FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS.
WE ARE PLEASED TO HAVE EIGHT APPLICANTS FOR THE POSITION, AND LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM EACH OF THEM THIS EVENING.
JUST A COUPLE OF REMINDERS FOR EVERYBODY, IF YOU DO NEED TO USE THE EXIT, THE DOORS THAT YOU CAME IN, AND IF YOU NEED THE RESTROOM, THEY'RE OUT THE HALL AND TO YOUR LEFT.
WITH THAT, WE'LL GO AHEAD AND GET STARTED,
[2. ADOPTION OF AGENDA]
AND THE FIRST ITEM OF BUSINESS TONIGHT IS TO ADOPT OUR AGENDA, SO THE CHAIR WOULD ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO DO SUCH.>> I'D LIKE TO MAKE A MOTION TO ADOPT THE AGENDA.
>> IT HAS BEEN MOVED TO ADOPT THE AGENDA, AND WITH THAT, WE'LL GO AHEAD AND VOTE.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
>> AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? THE AGENDA HAS BEEN ADOPTED, AND WE WILL PROCEED ONWARD.
FIRST ITEM ON THE AGENDA IS A SHORT EXECUTIVE SESSION,
[3. Executive Session]
THE BOARD WILL CONVENE INTO EXECUTIVE SESSION PER RCW 42.30.110 FOR FIVE MINUTES TO DISCUSS THE QUALIFICATIONS OF CANDIDATE FOR THE ELECTED OFFICE.WITH THAT, IF MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS WILL JOIN ME IN THE OTHER ROOM OR WE CAN HAVE A STANDING MEETING? [BACKGROUND]
>> I LOVE MY DADDY. BROUGHT HIM DINNER.
[00:08:44]
[BACKGROUND][4. MATTERS RESERVED FOR BOARD ACTION]
>> WELL, I WON'T LEAD YOU GUYS ON ANY LONGER.
WE'LL LET THE NERVOUSNESS GET OVER.
MANY YEARS AGO, I WAS SITTING IN A SIMILAR SEAT ANSWERING QUESTIONS WHEN I WAS LOOKING TO BE APPOINTED TO THE BOARD MYSELF SO I KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE.
BUT AS GABBY SAID SO ELOQUENTLY WHEN SHE CAME IN, YOU GUYS ARE ALL WELL QUALIFIED AND WE'RE LUCKY TO HAVE EIGHT APPLICANTS SUCH AS YOURSELF.
THIS ISN'T THE ONLY WAY THAT YOU CAN SERVE AS FAR AS INFLUENCING WHAT'S HAPPENING WITHIN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND IN YOUR SCHOOL.
TONIGHT, WHAT WE'D LIKE TO DO IS WE'D LIKE TO START OUT.
WE'RE GOING TO ASK A SERIES OF QUESTIONS.
EVERYONE WILL GET THE SAME QUESTIONS AND YOU'VE HAD THOSE BEFORE YOU.
THE ONE QUESTION YOU HAVEN'T HAD WHICH IS REALLY EASY.
I'M GOING TO ASK THAT WE'LL START OVER ON MY LEFT SIDE; YOUR RIGHT SIDE, AND WE'LL ASK EACH OF YOU JUST TO STAND UP, COME TO THE PODIUM AND GIVE US YOUR NAME.
THAT WAY, WE CAN GET ALL OF OUR PAPERWORK IN ORDER AND IDENTIFY YOU GUYS.
AFTER WE DO THAT, THEN WE'LL START AND PEGGY WILL BE ASKING THE FIRST QUESTION.
WHEN WE ASK THE QUESTIONS, WE'LL BE STARTING OVER ON THE LEFT WITH THE FIRST PERSON GETTING
[00:10:04]
THE FIRST QUESTION AND THEN EVERYBODY ANSWERING THAT SAME QUESTION.WHEN WE GET TO THE SECOND QUESTION, WE'LL START WITH THE SECOND STUDENT, AND THEN THIRD AND SUBSEQUENT AS WE GO ALONG.
ANY QUESTIONS AS WE START OUT? GREAT. THEN IF WE COULD START OVER HERE AND IF YOU COULD INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
>> HELLO, MY NAME IS EVELYN PEREZ.
>> HI THERE. MY NAME IS KIRA BERMAN.
>> HI. MY NAME IS [INAUDIBLE].
>> HELLO, MY NAME IS TYLER BULLIVANT.
>> THANK YOU, EVERYBODY. SO PEGGY, I'LL TURN IT OVER TO YOU.
>> I BEG YOUR PARDON. CHANEL, TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WANT TO BECOME A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER?
>> I DON'T KNOW. I WANT TO BE PART OF THE SCHOOL BOARD BECAUSE I WANT TO SPEAK UP FOR THOSE THAT CAN'T AND ARE TOO SCARED TO SPEAK UP BECAUSE I WAS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT WERE TOO SCARED TO SPEAK UP, AND I KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO NOT BE ABLE TO SPEAK UP TO ADULTS.
>> HI, MY NAME IS EVELYN PEREZ AS I SAID BEFORE.
SOME OF THE THINGS THAT I DO AT FERNDALE ARE TRACK AND I'M MANAGER FOR VOLLEYBALL.
I DO THEATER; I RUN LIGHTS AND TECH AND I'M IN LEADERSHIP.
CAN YOU REPEAT THE SECOND QUESTION PLEASE? SORRY.
>> I THINK YOU GUYS ARE ALL ANSWERING THE FIRST QUESTION SO MY APOLOGIES FOR NOT GETTING TO IT REALLY QUICKLY.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WANT TO BECOME A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER.
>> OKAY. MY MOTIVATION IS JUST EXPERIENCES I'VE HAD IN THE PAST ON NOT BEING ABLE TO GET MY VOICE OUT THERE AND KNOWING THAT MY FAMILY HASN'T.
I JUST THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR ME AND OTHERS JUST AROUND ME AND IN MY LIFE. THANK YOU.
>> I'M INVOLVED IN A LOT OF PLACES IN FERNDALE.
I'M A PART OF OUR TENNIS TEAM AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, I'M IN ASB; I'VE BEEN IN ASB SINCE MIDDLE SCHOOL, I'VE BEEN A PART OF LEADERSHIP SINCE MIDDLE SCHOOL, I'M THE SOUTH ASIAN CLUB PRESIDENT AT OUR SCHOOL, I LIKE TUTORING AFTER SCHOOL WITH SOME OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS.
I HELP OUT AT CASCADIA AFTER SCHOOL.
I'M REALLY ALL AROUND IN FERNDALE AND I'M REALLY INVOLVED IN SCHOOL.
THAT'S ONE OF MY BIGGEST PRIORITIES.
I TAKE A LOT OF AP CLASSES AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
BY BEING A PART OF SO MANY DIFFERENT GROUPS, I FEEL THE NEED TO REPRESENT THEM.
I'M A PART OF SO MANY PEOPLE AND I FEEL I SHOULD BE ABLE TO SPEAK UP FOR THEM.
I FEEL LIKE I WOULD HAVE A GREAT SAY ON WHAT ISSUES PEOPLE ARE FACING IN OUR COMMUNITY. THANK YOU.
>> CAN YOU REPEAT THE QUESTION?
>> I'VE CLOSED THE PAGE HERE WHICH IS NOT GOOD.
>> TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WANT TO BECOME A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER.
>> MY NAME IS OSHA MCPHERSON AND I LIKE READING, COOKING, AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
I PLAY ALL THE SAXOPHONES AND TROMBONE.
I'M A PART OF FFA; I DO PUBLIC SPEAKING THROUGH THAT, AND I DO LEADERSHIP AND I'M IN SOFTBALL.
WHAT REALLY MOTIVATED ME TO WANT TO
[00:15:01]
BE A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER IS OUR SCHOOL'S REPRESENTATIVES NOW.THEIR POSITION AT OUR SCHOOL EVEN WHEN THEY'RE NOT IN THIS ROOM DOING MEETINGS, IT REALLY IS PROMINENT EVEN AT OUR SCHOOL.
EVEN WHEN THEY'RE NOT HERE, THEY'RE ALWAYS DOING SOMETHING ELSE AND IT REALLY MOTIVATED ME SEEING THEM SPEAKING UP FOR OTHERS AND OUT FOR OTHERS TO MAKE ME WANT TO DO THAT, AND THOSE PEOPLE ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO ME ALSO. THANK YOU.
>> WITHIN THE FERNDALE COMMUNITY AND WITHIN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, I'M INVOLVED IN LEADERSHIP.
I WAS RECENTLY ELECTED AS OUR JUNIOR CLASS PRESIDENT.
I'M ALSO INVOLVED IN NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY.
I WAS RECENTLY ELECTED AS OUR VICE PRESIDENT.
I DO LEADERSHIP AND I'VE DONE THEATER SINCE I WAS ABOUT SEVEN SO I'VE QUITE INVOLVED IN THAT COMMUNITY.
I'VE DONE CHOIR SINCE THE BEGINNING OF FRESHMAN YEAR AND I'VE BEEN SECTION LEADER AND MORALE OFFICER.
OUTSIDE OF OUR COMMUNITY, I'M VERY INVOLVED WITH MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND JUST GETTING OUT OF NATURE AND TO OTHER COMMUNITIES.
I ALSO DO CHEER AT HIGH SCHOOL.
I'VE STARTED LAST YEAR AND IT WAS A GREAT DECISION TO GET INVOLVED WITH A BUNCH OF NEW KIND OF PEOPLE.
ONE OF MY BIG MOTIVATORS TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE STUDENT SCHOOL BOARD IS TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE FEELS LIKE THEY HAVE A PLACE WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY.
WE'RE ALL VERY INVOLVED IN OUR OWN LIVES IN TRYING TO GET SOMEWHERE AND JUST GET THINGS DONE, CHECK OFF OUR TO DO LIST, BUT I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE AND MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE FEELS VALUED AND EVERY EXPERIENCE THAT THEY EXPERIENCE MATTERS AND HOLDS A PLACE WITHIN OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES AS WELL.
IT'S A VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF MY PEERS AND THE PEOPLE THAT I SURROUND MYSELF WITH FEEL LIKE THEY'RE AN IMPORTANT PART OF MY LIFE AND THAT I CAN PUT FORTH THEIR NEEDS AND THEIR WANTS AND THEIR EXPERIENCES THAT THEY LONG FOR AT THE SAME STANDARD THAT I HOLD MY OWN EXPERIENCES.
THAT'S A VERY BIG MOTIVATOR I HAVE FOR THIS POSITION. THANK YOU.
>> WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO REPEAT THE QUESTION OR ARE YOU OKAY WITH IT?
I WANT TO BECOME A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER BECAUSE I FEEL IT'S A GREAT LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR ME.
I FEEL LIKE I CAN LEARN MANY VALUABLE THINGS THAT I COULD TAKE ON WITH ME TO THE FUTURE.
BEING PART OF THE SCHOOL BOARD, YOU ARE REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS OF FHS AND I WANT TO BE ABLE TO SHINE LIGHT ON PROBLEMS. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK UP FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T AND I THINK BEING PART OF THE SCHOOL BOARD IS A GREAT WAY TO DO THAT.
>> I'M INVOLVED IN A LOT OF THINGS AT FHS.
I PLAY TENNIS, I'M INVOLVED IN THE ORCHESTRA AND THE CHOIR, I WAS JUST ELECTED SECRETARY OF NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY, AND I DO THEATER.
THE REASON THAT I WOULD LIKE TO BECOME A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER IS I WANT TO GIVE MY FELLOW STUDENTS A VOICE.
I KNOW THAT'S PRETTY GENERIC, BUT I FEEL LIKE GIVING THE STUDENTS A VOICE IS ONE OF THE BIG REASONS SCHOOL BOARDS EXIST.
THEY ARE TO REALLY HELP US GET WHAT WE THINK WE NEED OUT OF OUR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES AND JUST DO THE BEST WE CAN FOR OURSELVES AND PREPARE OURSELVES FOR THE FUTURE.
THAT'S WHY I'D LIKE TO BECOME A SCHOOL BOARD REPRESENTATIVE.
>> THANKS. WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO REPEAT THE QUESTION OR ARE YOU GOOD?
>> I'M OKAY. THANK YOU. I AM THE OLDEST CHILD OF FIVE, AND I'M GETTING INVOLVED IN THE HIGH SCHOOL WITH BEING A PART OF NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY.
I RAN FOR PRESIDENT, I DID NOT MAKE IT, BUT I'LL RUN AGAIN NEXT YEAR.
WHEN IT COMES TO WANTING TO BE A PART OF THE SCHOOL BOARD, WHAT REALLY MOTIVATES ME IS SEEING HOW MANY PEOPLE WE HAVE IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, ALL THE WAY FROM THE SENIORS WHO ARE GRADUATING TO THE PRESCHOOLERS WHO ARE GETTING USED TO HAVING TO DO STUFF WITH THEIR DAY.
I WANT TO GO AND MAKE SURE THAT EACH PERSON THERE HAS THEIR NEEDS MET AND IS ABLE TO FEEL WELCOME AND THOUGHT ABOUT.
I'VE GOT A SIBLING ALL THE WAY DOWN IN FIRST GRADE AND SHE IS ADORABLE.
[00:20:05]
I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT EVEN SOMEONE AS YOUNG AS HER, 7, 6, ALL OF THEM ARE ABLE TO GO AND NOT BE IGNORED BECAUSE THEY'RE SO YOUNG, AND MAKE SURE THAT EVERY DECISION IS GOING TO BENEFIT BECAUSE I ALSO HIGHLY VALUE MY ACADEMICS.I DO WHAT I CAN TO PUSH MYSELF AND I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT NOT EVERYBODY STANDS BY THOSE VIEWS, AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT NOT ONLY THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO PUSH, BUT ALSO THOSE WHO ARE SATISFIED WITH HOW THEY WANT TO LEARN OR THOSE WHO NEED EXTRA ASSISTANCE, EACH PERSON, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE THOUGHT ABOUT AND MAKE SURE THAT NOBODY FEELS LIKE THERE IS NO PLACE FOR THEM, THAT THEY'RE BEING EXCLUDED BECAUSE OF DIFFERENT NEEDS OR DIFFERENT THEOLOGY, COLOR OF SKIN, ALL OF THESE THINGS, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO BIAS OR ANY SORT OF EXCLUSION BASED ON.
I WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE HAS A VOICE, IS HEARD, AND FEELS WELCOME.
>> I BELIEVE I HAVE THE SECOND QUESTION, BUT I THINK WE'RE GOING TO GO IN A DIFFERENT ORDER.
>> WE'LL START WITH EVELYN FOR THIS QUESTION.
>> THANK YOU. EVELYN, WHAT PARTICULAR SKILLS OR EXPERIENCES DO YOU HAVE THAT YOU COULD BRING TO THE POSITION OF STUDENT SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER?
>> WELL, SOME SKILLS THAT I HAVE, I THINK I WORK VERY WELL WITH OTHERS AND I'M VERY OPTIMISTIC AND I THINK I CAN BE ENTHUSIASTIC, BUT I ALSO HAVE MY OWN FEELINGS.
SOME EXPERIENCES I HAVE REALLY JUST LIKE WHAT I SAID BEFORE, BEING IN TRACK AND LEADERSHIP, THOSE HELP A LOT.
THERE'S KIDS THAT ARE YOUNGER THAN YOU AND THERE ARE KIDS THAT ARE OLDER THAN YOU, THERE'S PEOPLE THAT ARE DIFFERENT THAN YOU, SO THEY ALL HAVE THEIR OWN OPINIONS AND YOU GET TO LISTEN TO ALL OF THEM.
>> SKILLS WISE, I WOULD SAY I'M VERY HARD WORKING AND VERY DEDICATED TO EVERYTHING THAT I DO.
LIKE I MENTIONED, I'M A PART OF SO MANY THINGS IN FERNDALE, AND I ALWAYS GIVE 100% TO EVERYTHING THAT I DO.
I ALWAYS TAKE PRIDE IN EVERYTHING THAT I DO BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO DO JUST A HALF JOB OF IT.
BY ME BEING IN SO MANY LEADERSHIP POSITIONS, I'M NEXT YEAR'S EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE ENTIRE SCHOOL.
I'M CURRENTLY OUR SOPHOMORE CLASS PRESIDENT.
I HAVE BEEN IN THE POSITION OF TALKING WITH OTHERS AND BEING A GOOD COMMUNICATOR, WHETHER THAT BE WITH STAFF, ADMIN, OTHER STUDENTS.
I THINK ALL THESE EXPERIENCES OF ME BEING IN LEADERSHIP MAKE ME A GREAT CANDIDATE FOR THE STUDENT SCHOOL BOARD BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH SO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF PEOPLE AND YOU HAVE TO TALK WITH THEM AND COLLABORATING WITH OTHERS, NOT JUST LIKE PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY, BUT THE PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD.
I THINK THAT THOSE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES MAKE A VERY GOOD PART OF ME. THANK YOU.
>> SOME OF MY SKILLS ARE THAT I'M REALLY RESOURCEFUL.
I'VE DONE PUBLIC SPEAKING TO THE FFA AND I HAVE VERY GOOD INTERPERSONAL CONNECTION SKILLS, AND I'M GOOD WITH TIME MANAGEMENT, AND I THINK I'M PRETTY WELL SPOKEN, AND I'M PRETTY OPTIMISTIC TOO.
>> EXCUSE MY VOICE. I THINK THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILLS THAT I CAN BRING TO THE SCHOOL BOARD POSITION WOULD BE MY WILLINGNESS TO WORK WITH DIFFERENT KIND OF PEOPLE AND MY ABILITY TO TRY NEW THINGS.
I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK THAT WHEN YOU'RE COMING INTO A NEW POSITION OR A NEW EXPERIENCE, YOU'RE GOING TO WALK IN AND BE LIKE, I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I'M DOING AND I'M GOING TO DO IT SO PERFECT ON THE FIRST TRY, BUT I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THE TENACITY AND DETERMINATION THAT IT TAKES TO BE ABLE TO WORK THROUGH THE IMPERFECTIONS.
THE IMPERFECTIONS AND THE OBSTACLES THAT ARE GOING TO COME ALONG WITH TRYING A NEW POSITION OR A NEW SKILL OR A NEW LEADERSHIP ROLE, WHATEVER THAT MAY BE, THE DETERMINATION AND TENACITY THAT YOU HAVE TO HAVE IS WHAT'S GOING TO SPEAK VOLUMES OVER YOUR INITIAL ENTRANCE SKILL.
[00:25:05]
WHEN YOU'RE COMING INTO A NEW POSITION SUCH AS THIS ONE, YOU'RE GOING TO BE WORKING WITH ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS, DIFFERENT AGES, DIFFERENT SKILL SETS.I THINK YOUR ABILITY TO WORK WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE THAT DIFFER FROM YOUR OWN IS A VERY IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE SKILL THAT YOU NEED TO HAVE.
YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO WORK WITH A BUNCH OF LITTLE KIDS, WHICH I'VE HAD TO DO BEFORE THROUGH CHEER, THE AMOUNT OF YOUTH SKILLS CAMPS THAT WE'VE HAD TO DO, AND THE AMOUNT OF LITTLE KINDERGARTNERS THAT I'VE GOTTEN TO PLAY WITH HAS BEEN A VERY GREAT EXPERIENCE, BUT ALSO A VERY BIG LEARNING EXPERIENCE THAT I'VE HAD TO NAVIGATE.
WITH MY PARENTS, I'VE HELPED MY PARENTS WITH THEIR OWN JOBS, SO I'VE GOTTEN TO WORK WITH A BUNCH OF OLDER ADULTS AND I'VE GOTTEN TO BE INTRODUCED TO A BUNCH OF NEW PERSPECTIVES AND NEW WAYS OF WORK THAT HAVE OPENED MY MIND TO NEW WAYS OF THINKING THAT I THINK COULD BE USEFUL FOR POSITIONS SUCH AS THIS ONE. THANK YOU.
>> AS FOR EXPERIENCES, I USED TO BE PART OF A PROGRAM CALLED CIVIL AIR PATROL AND IT'S BASICALLY LINKED WITH THE AIR FORCE.
I WENT TO TONS OF DIFFERENT CAMPS ABOUT LEADERSHIP, AND I WAS PROMOTED TO STAFF SERGEANT.
I WAS LEADING A BUNCH OF PEOPLE AT ONCE AND IT TAUGHT ME LOTS ABOUT LEADERSHIP AND DISCIPLINE.
I WENT TO AN ENCAMPMENT FOR EIGHT DAYS AND IT WAS BRUTAL, BUT IT TAUGHT ME SO MUCH.
SOME THINGS THAT I COULD BRING TO THE TABLE IS OBVIOUSLY MY STUDENT PERSPECTIVE.
I'VE BEEN INVOLVED IN A LOT OF THINGS AT SCHOOL, HONOR SOCIETY, PIT ORCHESTRA, COLOR GUARD, MARCHING BAND, AND I MADE A LOT OF FRIENDS THROUGH THAT PROCESS.
I GOT TO KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE.
I KNOW IF I WERE TO EVER NEED FEEDBACK, I KNOW I COULD ALWAYS RELY ON THEM AND BRING THE BOARD FEEDBACK.
>> SOMETHING THAT I COULD BRING TO BEING THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SCHOOL BOARD IS BEING ABLE TO LISTEN WITH AN OPEN MIND.
I'VE GROWN UP WITH A LOT OF FAMILY WITH A LOT OF DIFFERENT VIEWS ON THE WORLD, A LOT OF DIFFERENT OPINIONS, AND I'VE REALLY LEARNED TO TAKE IN EVERYONE'S OPINION TO THE SAME AMOUNT OF VALIDITY.
JUST LISTEN TO EVERYONE'S OPINION AND NEVER SHUT SOMEONE ELSE BECAUSE THEIR VIEW IS DIFFERENT THAN WHAT YOU INITIALLY THINK.
YOU HAVE TO BE OPEN TO CHANGE, YOU HAVE TO BE OPEN TO JUST CHANGING YOUR MIND ABOUT ANYTHING.
I THINK THAT'S A REALLY IMPORTANT SKILL FOR A STUDENT BOARD REPRESENTATIVE TO HAVE IN THE SCHOOL BOARD.
I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I COULD BRING TO THE TABLE.
>> I BELIEVE THAT ONE OF MY BIGGEST CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SCHOOL BOARD IS MY ABILITY TO LISTEN AND TO ANALYZE BECAUSE I HAVE FOUR YOUNGER SIBLINGS AND THAT PUTS ME IN A POSITION WHERE I HAVE TO LISTEN A LOT BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL ADORABLE AND I PICK THEM UP FROM SCHOOL.
I GET TO LISTEN TO HOW THE SCHOOL DAY IS, BUT THAT IS A LITTLE IRRELEVANT, BUT IT TEACHES ME THAT I CAN PUT SOMEONE ELSE'S NEEDS AND OPINIONS FIRST BECAUSE I WANT TO HEAR ABOUT THEIR DAY AND I ALSO WANT TO HEAR WHAT EACH PERSON OF THE SCHOOL BOARD, THEIR THOUGHTS, OPINIONS.
I WILL GO AND I'LL LISTEN WITH AN OPEN MIND AND TAKE IN THEIR OPINIONS, THEIR THOUGHTS.
FOR ANALYZING, I'M VERY ANALYTICAL PERSON.
I USE IT A LOT WITHIN MY DIFFERENT CLASSES.
IT HELPS ME GROW WITHIN THEM AND IT HELPS MY PEOPLE SKILLS, WHICH I WILL ADMIT OCCASIONALLY WILL BE LACKING, BUT I WANT TO GO AND UNDERSTAND PEOPLE, AND I WANT TO BE ABLE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, AND BRING IT INTO MY OWN PERCEPTION.
>> I FORGOT TO MENTION THIS IN THE FIRST QUESTION.
I GOT THREE OLDER SIBLINGS AND THREE YOUNGER SIBLINGS.
I HAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE I HAVE TO LISTEN TO AND
[00:30:03]
I TRY MY BEST TO UNDERSTAND ALL THEIR POINTS OF VIEWS, WHICH IS HARD WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE HOUSEHOLD.BUT I TRY TO LISTEN TO THEM WITH AN OPEN MIND AND UNDERSTAND WHY THEY THINK LIKE THAT.
I THINK THIS WOULD BE A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO GROW THAT AND UNDERSTAND OTHER PEOPLE ASIDE FROM MY FAMILY.
I NEED THAT BECAUSE SOMETIMES I DON'T LISTEN TO OTHER PEOPLE.
I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO DO THAT WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND UNDERSTAND WHY THEY THINK LIKE THAT.
>> VERY GOOD. WELL, THANK YOU FOR YOUR ANSWER SO FAR.
I HAVE A GREAT QUESTION. IT REALLY IS.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EFFECTIVE STUDENT SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER, AND I WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT THE WORD EFFECTIVE.
>> SOME OF THE IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTICS THAT I THINK AN EFFECTIVE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER SHOULD HAVE IS DEFINITELY BEING ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WELL.
BEING ABLE TO BE CLEAR AND ARTICULATE AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, RESPECTFUL WHEN YOU'RE COMMUNICATING IS SO IMPORTANT WHEN YOU'RE DEALING WITH SO MANY DIFFERENT GROUPS OF PEOPLE, PEOPLE WHO ARE DIFFERENT THAN YOURSELF, WHETHER THEY BE YOUNG OR OLDER THAN YOU IT DOESN'T MATTER.
I THINK RESPECT GOES A LONG WAY AND BEING ABLE TO DO THAT SO CLEARLY IS JUST SO HELPFUL TO OVERCOME ANY CHALLENGES OF MISUNDERSTANDINGS.
I ALSO THINK THAT ANOTHER IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC IS BEING ABLE TO LISTEN.
LISTENING TO THE PEOPLE THAT WE ARE SERVING.
I THINK THAT WE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER'S PERSPECTIVES, AND NOT ONLY IS THAT FOR THE PEOPLE THAT WE'RE SERVING, BUT THE PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD.
WE HAVE TO LISTEN TO EACH OTHER AND UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER'S PERSPECTIVES, AND I THINK THAT'S SO IMPORTANT WHEN YOU WANT TO BE AN EFFECTIVE LEADER AND AN EFFECTIVE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER. THANK YOU.
>> I THINK ONE OF THE EFFECTIVE THINGS A STUDENT BOARD MEMBER COULD BE IS, ADVOCATING FOR OTHERS.
IT'S A REALLY BIG POINT AND I FEEL LIKE IT WASN'T STATED ENOUGH, BUT SPEAKING FOR OTHERS AND BEING OPEN MINDED ENOUGH TO SPEAK FOR THEM IS A REALLY BIG POINT AND GOOD COMMUNICATION AND JUST BEING EMPATHETIC TOWARDS OTHER PEOPLE AND THAT'S WHAT I THINK WOULD MAKE A REALLY EFFECTIVE STUDENT BOARD MEMBER. THANK YOU.
>> I REALLY LIKED THIS QUESTION BECAUSE I LIKED BEING ABLE TO DIFFERENTIATE BEING AN EFFECTIVE LEADER FROM BEING JUST A GENERIC LEADER.
I THINK TO BE AN EFFECTIVE LEADER, YOU NEED TO HAVE THE CHARACTERISTIC OF BEING ABLE TO LISTEN AND TO COMMUNICATE WITH PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS.
I VERY MUCH STAND FOR WHEN YOU TAKE A NEW POSITION IN A NEW ROLE AND A NEW EXPERIENCE, YOU WILL BE FULLY SERVING FOR OTHERS AND YOU'LL BE PUTTING THEIR NEEDS NOT ABOVE YOUR OWN BUT TO THE SAME STANDARD OF YOUR OWN.
NO MATTER WHAT THEIR THOUGHT PROCESS IS, AND IF IT'S DIFFERENT FROM YOURS, YOU FULLY TAKE THIS POSITION KNOWING THAT YOU STAND FOR THEM AND YOU STAND TO ADVOCATE FOR THEM AND FOR WHAT THEY NEED.
AN IMPORTANT PART OF THAT IS BEING ABLE TO LISTEN TO THEM.
BEING ABLE TO LISTEN TO THEIR EXPERIENCES AND WHAT THEY NEED AND WHAT THEY WANT IS A VERY IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC TO HAVE AND TO BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY IF ALL AGES.
WHEN YOU'RE TALKING TO SOMEONE THAT'S IN A HIGHER RANK THAN YOU OR A DIFFERENT AGE, IT CAN BE VERY INTIMIDATING.
I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE MY AGE SPECIFICALLY ARE VERY AFRAID OR NERVOUS TO TALK TO ADULTS AND WORRY OF BEING JUDGED OR LOOKED DOWN UPON.
I THINK IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT, NO MATTER WHERE YOU STAND, YOU STAND IN FRONT OF OTHER PEOPLE WITH KNOWING THAT YOU WILL BE SERVING THEM AND THAT YOU CAN WORK WITH PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND RESPECT GOES ACROSS THE BOARD BOTH WAYS.
I THINK THAT'S A VERY IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC FOR AN EFFECTIVE LEADER TO HAVE. THANK YOU.
>> I ALSO BELIEVE GOOD COMMUNICATION IS A REALLY IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC.
I ALSO BELIEVE STRONG LEADERSHIP IS IMPORTANT FOR BEING ON THE SCHOOL BOARD.
[00:35:04]
BEING A MEMBER ON THE SCHOOL BOARD WOULD MEAN THAT YOU'D HAVE TO GO OUT AND COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS, ASKING AROUND, WHAT ARE SOME ISSUES THAT YOU SEE IN OUR DISTRICT IN OUR SCHOOL, AND THAT REQUIRES YOU TO ACTUALLY GO AND COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS.SORRY, I JUST LOST MY TRAIN OF THOUGHT.
YOU NEED TO BE PROACTIVE, YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO TAKE INITIATIVE.
>> I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT THING AN EFFECTIVE STUDENT BOARD REPRESENTATIVE COULD BE IS JUST A GOOD LISTENER.
THIS JOB ENTAILS SITTING IN THESE MEETINGS AND LISTENING AND LISTENING TO YOUR PEERS AND JUST TAKING IN EVERYTHING WITH AN OPEN MIND, TAKING IN EVERYONE'S OPINION, TAKING IN EVERYONE'S WORLD VIEWS AND PUTTING THEM AGAINST YOUR OWN.
THE BEST THING YOU COULD BE AS ONE OF THESE REPRESENTATIVES IS JUST OPEN MINDED, I THINK.
>> I BELIEVE THAT ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO HAVE AS A STUDENT SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER IS RESPECT.
RESPECT FOR YOU WHO ARE ACTIVE ON THE PANEL AND RESPECT FOR THOSE WHO I WILL BE SERVING AND REPRESENTING.
GOING AND NOT ASSUMING, BUT GOING TO THOSE WHO I'M REPRESENTING, THOSE WHO ANY ISSUE MAY IMPACT IN FINDING WHAT THEY THINK NOT CREATING THESE LARGE IMAGES AND LEAVING THEM TO WONDER.
IS THIS WHO I WANT REPRESENTING? I ALSO BELIEVE THAT BEING A GOOD LISTENER IS VERY IMPORTANT TO BE ON A PANEL FOR BOTH FOR THOSE WHO ARE HERE AND MAKING SURE THAT WE ARE NOT MIXING UP COMMUNICATION, AND FOR THOSE WHO WE ARE REPRESENTING AS REPRESENTATIVES.
THEN ONE FINAL THING IS BEING ABLE TO BE HUMBLE ENOUGH TO ADMIT THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW EVERYTHING THAT SOMEONE ELSE MAY BE CORRECT, BUT NOT HUMBLE TO THE POINT WHERE YOU PREVENT YOURSELF FROM BEING RIGHT AND YOUR OPINIONS FROM BEING HEARD.
>> I THINK THAT WE NEED SOMEONE THAT WILL SPEAK UP ABOUT ISSUES, EVEN IF THEY'RE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH TALKING ABOUT IT BECAUSE THERE ARE CERTAIN TOPICS THAT PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT.
THEY JUST PUT THEMSELVES OUT THERE AND THEY'RE WELL, I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT THIS BECAUSE IT'S MAKING AN ISSUE FOR OTHER PEOPLE.
PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY TAKE THE TIME TO BE HERE AND LISTEN TO OTHER OPINIONS AND JUST LISTEN AND TALK ABOUT ISSUES.
>> WHAT I THINK WOULD MAKE AN EFFECTIVE REPRESENTATIVE, I KNOW THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN SAID BEFORE, ALL OF THE THINGS I'M ABOUT TO STATE BY EVERYBODY ELSE HERE.
BUT BEING OPEN MINDED AND LISTENING AND COMMUNICATING WITH PEOPLE, IT'S REALLY KEY TO EVEN JUST FRIENDSHIPS OR HAVING FAMILY MEMBERS THAT YOU TRUST.
BEING A STUDENT BOARD REP AND HAVING THOSE SKILLS, I THINK WOULD BE AMAZING. THANK YOU.
>> THE NEXT QUESTION IS, WHAT SHOULD OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT BE DOING TO ENSURE SAFETY OF STUDENTS AND STAFF?
>> I THOUGHT THIS IS ACTUALLY REALLY INTERESTING QUESTION BECAUSE WHEN I WATCHED THE VIDEOS OF GABBY BEING VOTED IN TO BE REPRESENTATIVE, I DEFINITELY THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING TO ASK A QUESTION ABOUT WHAT PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES DO WE FACE IN THE FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
I WONDER WHY I'M ASKING ALL OF MY FRIENDS, WHAT PROBLEMS DO YOU THINK WE HAVE HERE AT FERNDALE.
ACTUALLY, I DID GET ANSWERS FROM THEM,
[00:40:01]
AND IT WAS ABOUT BULLYING MOSTLY.I THINK CREATING A SAFE SPACE AT FERNDALE AND A CLEAR LINE OF COMMUNICATION THAT WILL GET SOMETHING TO ACTUALLY HAPPEN AND CHANGE IS REALLY IMPORTANT, AND I THINK WE JUST NEED TO CREATE A MORE POSITIVE SPACE. THANK YOU.
>> FOR THIS QUESTION, I ACTUALLY INTERPRETED IT IN TWO DIFFERENT WAYS.
WHEN I READ THROUGH IT THE FIRST TIME AND ANSWERED IT TO MYSELF THE FIRST TIME, I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT OF MORE EMOTIONAL SAFETY IN A WAY RATHER THAN PHYSICAL SAFETY.
WHILE THEY'RE BOTH OBVIOUSLY, EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.
MY MIND IMMEDIATELY WENT TO WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE EMOTIONALLY SAFE IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO FEEL SECURE AND ENSURE THAT NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO, YOU FEEL SAFE? I CAME UP WITH MAKING SURE THAT COMMUNICATION IS DESTIGMATIZED.
THERE'S SO MANY TOPICS, OF COURSE, WITHIN SCHOOL DISTRICTS, BUT JUST IN GENERAL WITHIN SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS THAT CAN BE VERY TABOO OR CAN BE VERY SCARY TO TALK ABOUT AND I THINK IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO ENSURE PEOPLE FEEL SAFE TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS KNOW THAT THEY CAN GO TO ANY STAFF OR PEERS, OR ANY ADULT WITHIN THE SCHOOL THAT THEY FEEL VERY SAFE AND THEY TRUST.
THEY CAN TALK ABOUT ANY PERSONAL OBSTACLES THAT THEY MAY BE FACING OR ANY OBSTACLES WITHIN THE SCHOOL.
I THINK ALLEVIATING THOSE JUDGMENT FACTORS CAN VERY MUCH ENSURE THAT STUDENTS FEEL VERY EMOTIONALLY SAFE WITHIN OUR SCHOOL AND AS FAR AS PHYSICAL SAFETY, THERE'S JUST MAKING SURE THAT THINGS AREN'T BEING SO MUCH AS WATCHED OVER, BUT MONITORED AND MAKING SURE THAT ALL AREAS OF OUR SCHOOL NOT BEING WATCHED, BUT JUST LOOKED AT AS AN AREA WHERE STUDENTS CAN COLLABORATE BUT NOT OPEN AS AN UNSAFE SPACE.
JUST MAKING SURE EVERYTHING IS BEING MONITORED AND IS ENSURED TO BE SAFE. THANK YOU.
>> I INTERPRETED THIS QUESTION AS PHYSICAL SAFETY, SO FIRES AND LOCKDOWNS AND EARTHQUAKES.
THAT'S HOW I'LL BE ANSWERING IT.
BUT I FEEL THAT OUR SCHOOL HAS DONE A PRETTY GREAT JOB MAKING SURE STAFF AND STUDENTS ARE SAFE SINCE WE'VE GOTTEN OUR NEW SCHOOL.
I WOULD SAY REGULARLY REVIEWING SAFETY PROTOCOLS.
AND I FEEL LIKE WE ALSO HAVEN'T DONE AS MANY FIRE DRILLS OR LOCKDOWN DRILLS THIS YEAR, SO I FEEL LIKE THAT SHOULD BE HAPPENING A BIT MORE FREQUENTLY.
>> I ALSO INTERPRETED THIS QUESTION AS PHYSICAL SAFETY RATHER THAN EMOTIONAL.
I THINK LIKE [INAUDIBLE] SAID, WITH OUR NEW SCHOOL, IT'S PRETTY WELL DESIGNED AGAINST ALL THESE NEW THINGS AS THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY IN ALL THOSE FIELDS.
THE THINGS THAT ARE MORE DANGEROUS TO STUDENTS NOWADAYS, I THINK ARE MORE SELF-INFLICTED THINGS LIKE MAINLY DRUG USE AND SOCIAL MEDIA, AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
THE BEST THING THAT WE CAN DO IS RAISE A LOT MORE AWARENESS OF THE RISKS THAT THESE THINGS BRING AND HOW THEY CAN AFFECT YOUR FUTURE.
BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE A LOT OF STUDENTS AT A SCHOOL AREN'T REALLY AWARE OF THAT.
THEY JUST DO IT BECAUSE IT'S COOL.
IT'S WHAT EVERY ELSE IS DOING AND WE REALLY NEED TO BRING A LOT MORE AWARENESS OF THE PROBLEMS THAT THOSE BRING.
>> I BELIEVE THAT IN TERMS OF SAFETY, ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS FOR BOTH STUDENTS AND STAFF IS COMMUNICATION.
BECAUSE IF ALL THE STAFF AND ALL THE STUDENTS KNOW WHAT'S UP, THE GOING ON AND THE PLAN, THEN IT IS VERY EASY TO SEE ANY DEVIATION FROM THAT AND IDENTIFY IT, AND IF IT'S A RISK OF ANY MATTER TO GO AND TAKE THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION AGAINST IT.
IT IS ALSO VERY EFFECTIVE FOR THE EMOTIONAL SIDE OF THINGS AS IT PROVIDES OPPORTUNITY FOR PEOPLE WHO MAY NEED AN OUTREACH TO LEARN ABOUT DIFFERENT PLACES IN PROGRAMS THAT THEY CAN GO TO REACH OUT TO OR JUST FINE FOR MANY DIFFERENT NEEDS FOR THEIR SAFETY.
[00:45:16]
>> I THINK WE NEED MORE LOCKDOWN DRILLS AS SOMEONE HAS ALREADY SAID.
BUT FOR MENTAL SAFETY FOR STUDENTS, I FEEL LIKE THERE'S A LOT OF STUFF THAT'S JUST SHOVED UNDER THE RUG BECAUSE I'VE HAD PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH THEN AND THERE.
BUT THEN THEY DELAYED IT AND I FELT I WASN'T SAFE AT SCHOOL.
I'VE ACTUALLY TALKED TO SOME OTHER STUDENTS AND THEY'VE DEALT WITH THE SAME THING.
THE PRINCIPAL WOULD TALK TO THAT STUDENT AND SHE WOULD BE LIKE, WELL, I'LL MAKE SURE THAT STUDENT DON'T GO AROUND YOU NO MORE.
BUT THAT STUDENT IS HARASSING OTHER STUDENTS.
IT'S NOT JUST THAT ONE STUDENT.
BECAUSE I WAS TALKING TO MY FRIEND TODAY AND SHE TOLD ME ABOUT THIS GUY HARASSING HER AND SHE TOLD THE PRINCIPAL, BUT THE PRINCIPAL WAS LIKE, OH, WELL, JUST MAKE SURE HE DON'T TALK TO YOU ANY MORE, THINK.
WHEN THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SOMETHING IN PLACE TO THE POINT WHERE THEY CAN'T COME WITHIN A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF FEET OR WHATEVER OF EACH OTHER BECAUSE IT FELT UNSAFE FOR HER.
I WAS IN THAT POSITION TOO, AND I KNOW HOW IT FEELS AND IT'S VERY SCARY.
>> HI. I TOOK THIS QUESTION IN TWO WAYS ALSO, AS KIRA.
I TOOK IT AS PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY SLASH MENTALLY.
I THINK PHYSICALLY, WE SHOULD KEEP DOING DRILLS, KEEP DOING ALL THIS STUFF TO PROTECT US FROM NATURAL STUFF.
I ACTUALLY HAD GOTTEN A STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE, AND HE SAID THAT AT HIS OLD SCHOOL, THEY HAD SAFETY BOXES FOR THIS TYPE OF STUFF AND I KNOW WHEN I WAS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, WE ALSO DID BECAUSE I WENT TO AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN CALIFORNIA.
BUT I THINK THAT IS A GOOD IDEA JUST SAYING SAFETY BOXES IN THE SCHOOL, THIRD FLOOR, SECOND FLOOR.
I KNOW THEY'RE VERY UNSAFE UP THERE AND MENTALLY, I THINK WE SHOULD JUST TRY AND PROMOTE THE RESOURCES THAT WE HAVE FOR COUNSELORS AND ADULTS AROUND THAT CAN HELP WITH MENTAL PROBLEMS LIKE ADDICTION AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
I THINK WE SHOULD ALSO ADVOCATE MORE AND EXPLAIN TO YOUNGER KIDS HOW SOME OF THIS STUFF WORKS AND HOW THEY CAN DEAL WITH IT AT HOME BECAUSE I KNOW PERSONALLY THAT MY FAMILY HAS DEALT WITH THAT AND THEY NEEDED HELP WHEN THEY DIDN'T HAVE IT. THANK YOU.
>> I THINK OUR DISTRICT SHOULD CONTINUE WHAT IT'S BEEN DOING LATELY, WHICH HAS BEEN DOUBLE SECURING OUR CAMPUSES.
I THINK THAT MAKES OUR STUDENTS AND OUR STAFF FEEL SO SAFE WHEN WE HAVE SUCH A LOVELY NEW BUILDING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH HAS SO MANY GATES AND THOSE ONE WAY EXITS.
I THINK THAT'S SO IMPORTANT THAT WE UPKEEP THAT NEW THING THAT WE'VE BEEN INTRODUCING INTO ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS.
BUT I THINK THAT THIS GOES BEYOND JUST THE CAMPUS INSIDE THE WALLS OF OUR SCHOOLS, I THINK IT BOILS DOWN TO THE CLIMATE AND THE CULTURE, AND I THINK THAT WE SHOULD MAKE IT CLEAR THAT WE DON'T TOLERATE THE BEHAVIORS THAT WE'VE BEEN SEEING LATELY THAT HAVE BEEN CREATING SUCH A BIG ISSUE IN OUR COMMUNITY, WHICH IS VIOLENCE BETWEEN STUDENTS, WHETHER THAT BE VERBALLY OR PHYSICALLY, OR ONLINE IRREGARDLESS OF ALL OF THAT.
I THINK IT SHOULD BE CLEAR THAT WE DON'T TOLERATE THAT ANYMORE, AND JUST HAVING SAFE PEOPLE TO CONFIDE IN FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS BECAUSE WHEN YOU FEEL SAFE AND YOU HAVE SOMEONE TO TALK TO, YOU CAN LEARN. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU, STUDENTS. AS I MENTIONED AT THE ONSET OF THIS DEPENDING ON HOW LONG YOUR ANSWERS TOOK, WE WOULD DETERMINE HOW MANY QUESTIONS WE HAD BASED ON OUR TIME.
IT DOES LOOK LIKE WE'VE COME TO A POINT WHERE WE WERE GOING TO HAVE TO LEAVE THE REST OF THE QUESTIONS UNANSWERED.
BUT I DID WANT TO GIVE EACH OF YOU THE CHANCE AND WE'LL START WITH KIRA IF THERE'S SOMETHING THAT YOU WEREN'T ABLE TO TELL US IF YOU'D LIKE TO TELL US THAT STATEMENT, THAT'D BE GREAT.
[00:50:01]
I GUESS TO JUST ROUND THIS OFF REAL QUICK, I WANTED TO WRAP UP SOME OF MY FINAL THOUGHTS.ONE THING THAT I REALLY HOPED TO GET TO SHARE TODAY WAS SOME IDEAS THAT I HAD TO MAKE.
I REALLY LIKED THE QUESTION THAT ASKED HOW WE CAN MAKE SURE SOME STUDENTS AND FAMILIES THAT MAY NOT FEEL INCLUDED OR WOULD WANT TO BE INCLUDED MORE.
I THOUGHT A REALLY GOOD WAY TO DO THAT WAS TO NOT ONLY PROMOTE MORE VARIOUS CULTURAL EVENTS.
I REALLY LOVE ALL OUR MULTICULTURAL NIGHTS.
I THINK IT'S A VERY GOOD WAY TO JUST BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER BY GETTING TO SHARE SOMETHING THAT I KNOW SO MANY PEOPLE ARE VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT.
I THINK DIFFERENT CULTURES, IT'S VERY BEAUTIFUL TO SEE EVERYONE GET TO SHOW OFF SOMETHING THAT THEY'RE SO PROUD OF, AND TO BE PROUD OF WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY STAND FOR IN THEIR BACKGROUNDS.
I THINK, GETTING TO DO MORE OF THAT AND GETTING TO PROMOTE DIFFERENT CULTURES AND BACKGROUNDS, CAN HELP PEOPLE FEEL EMPOWERED AND BROUGHT TOGETHER BY SOMETHING THAT I KNOW DIVIDES A LOT OF PEOPLE.
I THINK TAKING SOMETHING THAT CAN BE SO DIVIDING AND MAKING IT SOMETHING THAT CAN UNIFY OTHERS TOGETHER IS A REALLY BEAUTIFUL THING.
I THINK, ESPECIALLY WITHIN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, THAT'D BE REALLY BEAUTIFUL TO SEE.
ALSO SOME MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS, WHETHER THAT BE TUTORING OR JUST OTHER WAYS THAT LEADERSHIP CAN ENCOURAGE SOME OF ITS STUDENTS TO HELP NEW STUDENTS OR STUDENTS WHO MIGHT BE LEARNING ANOTHER LANGUAGE OR WHATEVER THAT MAY BE.
I THINK A LOT OF MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS WOULD BE REALLY NICE TO SEE, AND I THINK THAT WE COULD DO A LOT OF FUN THINGS WITH THAT.
I THINK AS TO WRAP UP, AGAIN, SOMETHING THAT REALLY MOTIVATED ME TO COME HERE TODAY AND APPLY FOR THIS POSITION WAS GIVING A VOICE TO THOSE WHO DON'T FEEL AS THEY CAN FOR THEMSELVES.
WHETHER THAT'D BE AN INTERNAL CONFLICT OR AN EXTERNAL CONFLICT, I THINK IF YOU HAVE THE MEANS TO GO FOR SOMETHING, AND TRY SOMETHING, THEN YOU, BY ALL MEANS, SHOULD DO THAT.
I FEEL AS THOUGH AS MUCH AS I'M INVOLVED WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY, I HAVE ACCESS TO A LOT OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE OF ALL DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AND ALL DIFFERENT CULTURES.
I SHOULD USE WHAT I CAN TO GET DIFFERENT INSIGHTS TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR DISTRICT CAN BE A SAFE SPACE AND A PLACE THAT PEOPLE ARE EXCITED TO BE, THAT THEY'RE EXCITED TO COME TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY, AND THEY'RE EXCITED TO GET TO TALK TO ALL DIFFERENT PEOPLE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME.
>> I JUST REALLY WANTED TO ADDRESS QUESTION 5, STUDENTS AND FAMILIES WHO HAVEN'T ALWAYS FELT COMPLETELY WELCOMED.
FHS HAS A VERY DIVERSE COMMUNITY, AND I FEEL THAT MAYBE SOME REASONS FAMILIES DON'T REALLY WANT TO COME TO EVENTS IS LANGUAGE BARRIER.
I KNOW SOME FAMILIES MYSELF WHO DON'T LIKE TO COME TO EVENTS SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE EVENT IS OR THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH.
I DIDN'T REALLY COME UP WITH A SOLUTION FOR THAT, BUT I JUST WANTED TO PUT IT OUT THERE.
ANOTHER ISSUE MAY BE TRUST AND COMMUNICATION.
FOR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, WE COULD HAVE SOMETHING LIKE LISTENING SESSIONS WHERE FAMILIES CAN COME AND VOICE THEIR OPINIONS AND VOICE THEIR CONCERNS, AND WE COULD HOPEFULLY GIVE THEM ANSWERS, AND GIVE THEM SOME COMFORT.
>> A REALLY IMPORTANT TOPIC THAT I WANTED TO ADDRESS TODAY WAS ALSO QUESTION 5.
I THINK THAT THE BEST WAY TO MAKE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES FEEL WELCOMED BY A COMMUNITY IS TO REALLY PUSH MORE FOR EXTRACURRICULARS.
MOST OF MY BEST FRIENDS IN THE WORLD I'VE GOTTEN FROM EXTRACURRICULAR, SPORTS, CLUBS, THINGS LIKE THAT.
I FEEL LIKE A BIG REASON THAT A LOT OF FAMILIES WHO MOVE IN OR JUST HAVE LIVED HERE FOREVER BUT HAVEN'T REALLY FOUND THEIR PLACE, MAYBE, THE REASON THAT THEY HAVEN'T FOUND THAT IS, THEY HAVEN'T LOOKED AROUND FOR EXTRACURRICULARS.
A REASON FOR THAT IS, WE DON'T RAISE A LOT OF AWARENESS ABOUT SOME OF THEM.
FOR EXAMPLE, LAST YEAR, I DID NOT KNOW WE HAD A GOLF TEAM UNTIL THEY WON STATE.
IF I HAD WANTED TO DO GOLF, I WOULD HAVE BEEN PRETTY BUMMED ABOUT THAT.
I DON'T PERSONALLY HAVE A SOLUTION FOR THAT, BUT I THINK THAT THAT'S THE BEST WAY THAT WE CAN BRING FAMILIES INTO THE FIELD MORE.
[00:55:03]
AS A LITTLE CHERRY ON TOP, STUDENTS THAT ARE IN NO EXTRACURRICULARS, HAVE A 70% CHANCE OF GRADUATING.THAT LEAVES ABOUT 350 KIDS OUT OF OUR 1,300 CLASS, NOT GRADUATING.
STUDENTS INVOLVED IN EXTRACURRICULARS, HAVE AN 87% CHANCE OF GRADUATING.
THAT'S 169 KIDS NOT GRADUATING.
THAT'S A PRETTY HUGE DIFFERENCE.
IF STUDENTS AND STAFF TAKE A LOT MORE INITIATIVE AND TRYING TO GET KIDS TO JOIN EXTRACURRICULARS OR RAISING AWARENESS FOR THEM, I THINK WE COULD REALLY BETTER THE EDUCATION EXPERIENCE HERE AT FERNDALE. THANK YOU.
>> ONE THING THAT I WANTED TO MENTION BEFORE THE TIME WAS UP, IS THAT, I, AS I SAID BEFORE, PLACE A LOT OF EMPHASIS ON MY ACADEMICS, BUT ALSO BELIEVE THAT IT IS GOOD FOR EVERYBODY ON THE SPECTRUM TO HAVE AVAILABILITY, BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE LIKE ME AND A COUPLE OTHERS WHO ARE HERE TODAY WHO WANT TO PUSH THEMSELVES, WHO WANT TO FIND THESE EXTRA OPPORTUNITIES TO GO FURTHER.
THIS IS WHY I'M TAKING FIVE AP CLASSES NEXT YEAR.
YES, I'M CRAZY, BUT YES, I LIKE A CHALLENGE.
THAT IS MY BIG THING, GOING IN PROMOTING THE HIGHS, BUT ALSO PROMOTING THE LOWS, BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW THE EXACT NUMBER, BUT I KNOW WE'VE GOT QUITE A FEW STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, WHETHER IT'S LEARNING DISABILITIES OR PHYSICAL, BUT I WANT TO GO AND MAKE SURE THAT NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE, WHETHER THEY'RE A SEVEN YEAR OLD WITH A LEARNING DISABILITY OR A SENIOR ABOUT TO GRADUATE, GOING ON THE HONOR ROLL, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY ALL HAVE WHAT THEY WANT AND WHAT THEY NEED TO FEEL SUCCESSFUL, NOT JUST WITHIN THEIR GRADES, BUT FOR THEMSELVES.
>> I WANTED TO ANSWER QUESTION 7, AND TRY TO HAVE THE CLUBS KNOWN AND WHAT THEY DO IN THOSE CLUBS, BECAUSE THERE ARE A LOT OF CLUBS AT FERNDALE, AND I FEEL WELCOMED IN THE CHESS QUEEN CLUB AND CHECK UP ON THE CLUBS, BECAUSE THERE ARE SOME DRAMA WITHIN THE CLUBS THAT YOU GUYS DON'T KNOW ABOUT, AND MAKE THEM FEEL LIKE THEIR VOICES ARE HEARD, AND THEY CAN SPEAK UP TO THOSE ADULTS THAT ARE IN CHARGE OF THOSE CLUBS.
BECAUSE I'VE BEEN PUSHED AWAY FROM CHEST QUEEN FOR A WHILE BECAUSE OF THE DRAMA, WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT.
BUT I'VE BEEN TRYING TO KEEP COMING BACK, BUT THE STUDENTS MAKE IT HARD FOR ME TO WANT TO COME BACK, AND THE ADULTS DON'T WANT TO LISTEN.
THEY'RE LIKE, WELL, YOU GUYS ARE TEENAGERS, THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN.
WELL, YOU'RE MAKING ME FEEL NOT WELCOME IN A CLUB THAT I'M SUPPOSED TO FEEL WELCOME IN.
IT'S HARD BECAUSE THEY JUST WON'T LISTEN AND THEY DON'T WANT TO HEAR ANYONE ELSE'S OPINION.
WE NEED TO GET THOSE ADULTS TO UNDERSTAND THAT IT'S NOT JUST THEIR OPINION, IT'S OUR OPINION TOO BECAUSE THAT'S THE WHOLE REASON FOR THE CLUBS, ISN'T IT? BECAUSE I POINTED THAT OUT, AND THEY'RE LIKE, WELL, YOU SELL YOUR OPINION, NO.
IT'S HARD TO SPEAK UP TO THOSE ADULTS. THANK YOU.
>> HI. I'M GOING TO JUST PULL UP WHAT I HAD REALLY QUICK.
I DIDN'T WANT TO BE ON MY PHONE BECAUSE I FELT LIKE THAT WOULD BE RUDE, BUT ALL MY STUFF IS ON HERE.
I THINK WITH THE FIRST QUESTION, I KNOW WE WENT OVER THAT ALREADY.
BUT I WANTED TO GO A LITTLE DEEPER INTO THAT BECAUSE WHAT MOTIVATED ME TO GO ON TO TRY OUT GET VOTED ONTO, WHATEVER.
THE STUDENT BOARD IS ACTUALLY MY MOM BECAUSE I KNOW THIS MIGHT BE A LITTLE CORNY, BUT IT'S OKAY.
SHE HAD LOST HER SISTER TO ADDICTION, AND I REALLY WANT TO ADVOCATE FOR YOUNGER KIDS AND STUFF LIKE THAT, GET THEM MORE AWARE WITH MENTAL ISSUES IN THEIR HOUSE, OUTSIDE OF THEIR HOUSE, IN THE SCHOOL, WHEREVER THEY ARE, AND LET THEM KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH THAT STUFF BECAUSE LIKE I SAID MANY TIMES ALREADY, I HAVE GONE THROUGH THAT AND MY FAMILY HAS GONE THROUGH THAT AND IT'S AFFECTED A LOT OF IT.
[01:00:01]
I'M REALLY DEEP INTO ADVOCATING FOR LGBTQ AND JUST IMMIGRANTS AND LANGUAGE BARRIERS AND LEARNING NEW LANGUAGES AND NEW CULTURES.THAT IS A THING THAT I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO ADD.
I THINK WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH LANGUAGES AT OUR SCHOOL BECAUSE IT TEACHES US A LOT, EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE A COUPLE, I THINK WE SHOULD GET MORE.
[LAUGHTER] BUT THAT WAS REALLY ALL THAT I WANTED TO SAY.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.
>> I REALLY WANTED TO TOUCH ON THE LAST FEW QUESTIONS, ESPECIALLY QUESTION NUMBER SEVEN, WHICH IS WHAT IS ONE SUGGESTION YOU HAVE FOR IMPROVING THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE OF STUDENTS IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT.
THIS WAS MY FAVORITE QUESTION BECAUSE IT REALLY MADE ME REFLECT ON MY OWN EXPERIENCE AS SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN IN THE FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT MY ENTIRE LIFE.
I LOVE SCHOOL AND MY EXPERIENCE WITH SCHOOL HAS BEEN SO GREAT BECAUSE I'VE BEEN SO INVOLVED IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT.
I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME IS KEEPING KIDS INVOLVED IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT.
BECAUSE WHEN YOU HAVE A REASON TO COME TO SCHOOL, WHETHER THAT BE THAT ONE CLUB THAT YOU LOVE OR THAT ONE CLASS THAT YOU LIKE OR THAT ONE TEACHER YOU GET TO SEE, IT MAKES IT FEEL ALL WORTH IT.
PEOPLE ALWAYS ASK ME, WHY DO YOU LOVE SCHOOLS BECAUSE I LOVE SCHOOL BECAUSE I LOVE ENGLISH CLASS OR MATH CLASS, WHICH I DO, BUT WHATEVER.
THAT'S BESIDES THE POINT. BUT IT'S BECAUSE I GET TO GO TO SCHOOL AND SEE MY FRIENDS AND I GET TO SEE MY FAVORITE TEACHERS AND GET TO TALK TO OTHER PEOPLE AND GO TO TENNIS PRACTICE AFTER SCHOOL.
I THINK THAT IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE START GETTING STUDENTS MORE INVOLVED AND FINDING THINGS THAT THEY LOVE THAT THEY FLOURISH AND BECAUSE SOMETIMES IT'S NOT ALWAYS ACADEMICS.
I THINK WE SHOULD TRULY FIND A WAY FOR STUDENTS TO ALL FEEL LIKE THEY MATTER IN OUR COMMUNITY.
AND WHEN THEY FEEL LIKE THEY MATTER IN OUR COMMUNITY THAT THEY HAVE AN IMPACT ON SOMETHING THAT THEY DO HERE AT FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT, THEN THEY FEEL PRIDE, A SENSE OF PRIDE FOR FERNDALE, BECAUSE WE ARE ONE COMMUNITY, WE ARE ONE FAMILY.
I FEEL LIKE WITH OUR NEW BUILDING, I FEEL A SENSE OF WE SHOULD HAVE ALL THIS PRIDE FOR FERNDALE, AND I'VE DONE A GREAT JOB MYSELF OF BEING INVOLVED AND ENCOURAGING OTHERS AND I'VE TAKEN INITIATIVES IN SO MANY DIFFERENT FACTIONS, THROUGH LEADERSHIP, I HOSTED OUR WINTER FESTIVAL THAT WE HAD EARLIER THIS YEAR TO KICK OFF THE WINTER BREAK.
I'M ALSO PLANNING THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL FIELD DAY, WHICH WE'RE HAVING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
WITH ME BEING SO INVOLVED AND DOING ALL THESE GREAT THINGS, I FEEL THIS NEED TO BE A VOICE FOR ALL THESE PEOPLE THAT I'M A PART OF.
SO I REALLY THINK THAT IT'S TIME THAT WE GET CONNECTED HERE IN THIS DISTRICT. THANK YOU.
>> I JUST WANTED TO TALK ABOUT QUESTION FIVE, AND PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T FELT INCLUDED OR WELCOME IN OUR COMMUNITY.
IS THE FIRST THING TO DO IS ACKNOWLEDGE THE PEOPLE WHO FEEL MARGINALIZED IN THE COMMUNITY AND IDENTIFY THE BARRIER THAT THEY'RE FACING? I THINK THAT'S JUST SO IMPORTANT BECAUSE ONCE YOU FIND OUT THE PROBLEM AND WHAT'S GOING ON, YOU CAN MAKE A SOLUTION FOR IT.
THERE'S SO MANY PROBLEMS WITHIN THE FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND IT'S GOOD THAT WE HAVE GOOD THINGS GOING ON, BUT THERE'S ALSO PROBLEMS THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED, AND IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE ADDRESS THEM SOON. THANK YOU.
.>> WELL, THANK YOU, STUDENTS.
I'M NOT RELISHING THE THOUGHT OF GOING IN AND HAVING A DISCUSSION ABOUT WHO WE'RE GOING TO VOTE FOR BECAUSE I HAVE A FEELING IT MIGHT BE A CHALLENGE.
FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE JUST JOINING US, WE ARE RUNNING A LITTLE BIT BEHIND DUE TO THE GOOD ANSWERS THAT WE RECEIVED FROM OUR STUDENTS AS THEY'VE GRACED US WITH THEIR OPINIONS AS WE'VE ASKED THEM QUESTIONS IN AN INTERVIEW PROCESS FOR APPOINTING OUR NEW SCHOOL BOARD REPRESENTATIVE.
AT THIS TIME, THE BOARD IS GOING TO RECESS
[5. EXECUTIVE SESSION]
INTO AN EXECUTIVE SESSION FOR THE PURPOSE OF DISCUSSING THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE CANDIDATES.AND AFTER THAT 15 MINUTE PERIOD, WE WILL BE BACK OUT HERE TO APPOINT A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE.
SO AND THEN OUR REGULAR MEETING WILL COMMENCE RIGHT AFTER THAT.
IF THE BOARD WILL PLEASE JOIN ME.
WE'RE GOING TO RECONVENE OUR SPECIAL MEETING.
FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE HERE FOR THE REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING.
IT WILL BEGIN SHORTLY AFTER WE CONCLUDE THIS ONE.
[01:05:03]
WE'VE COME OUT OF EXECUTIVE SESSION.WE'VE JUST HAD A GREAT DISCUSSION ABOUT EIGHT GREAT YOUNG INDIVIDUALS.
WE WANT TO THANK YOU ALL FOR APPLYING.
ANY ONE OF YOU WOULD SERVE US WELL ON THIS BOARD.
WE WISH WE COULD TAKE YOU ALL, BUT THERE'S NOT ENOUGH SEATS.
HAVE ISSUES, BUT I DO WANT TO LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT AFTER WE DO MAKE OUR DECISION, KRISTI HAS INFORMED ME THAT THOSE THAT ARE NOT PUT ONTO THE BOARD, WE'LL BE INVITED TO BE PART OF HER SUPERINTENDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE, AND WE WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU ALL TO TAKE UP THAT INVITATION BECAUSE YOU'VE GOT LOTS OF GOOD THINGS TO SHARE.
WITH THAT, I WILL OPEN IT UP TO THE BOARD FOR DISCUSSION
[6. MATTERS RESERVED FOR BOARD ACTION]
AND SUBSEQUENTLY THEN A MOTION TO APPOINT A SCHOOL BOARD STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE.>> I JUST WANT TO ADD TO DR ERIKSON'S REMARKS THAT THIS WAS JUST A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR FROM EACH OF YOU AND YOUR PERSPECTIVES THAT YOU HAVE FROM OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND I KNOW THAT WE CAN'T GO WRONG WITH ANY ONE OF YOU THAT GETS SELECTED.
I'M REALLY IMPRESSED WITH THE CALIBER OF INDIVIDUALS THAT YOU ARE AND THE WAY THAT YOU PRESENTED YOURSELVES, IT'S NOT GOING TO BE EASY AT ALL.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING YOURSELVES OUT THERE.
>> I WOULD LIKE TO ECHO WHAT NANCY SAID.
WHAT A GREAT DISPLAY OF OUR FERNDALE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS.
SO IT MAKES US FEEL VERY GOOD.
AND JUST A QUICK REMINDER, WHOEVER YOU ALL REPRESENT THE HIGH SCHOOL, BUT YOU ALSO REPRESENT THE DISTRICT.
AND AS, WHOEVER IS SELECTED, I HOPE THAT YOU REMEMBER THAT IS THE WHOLE SCHOOL DISTRICT, EVERYONE IN FERNDALE.
SO HAPPY TO HAVE HEARD YOU, I APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENTS, THEY WERE REALLY GREAT, AND WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A GREAT TIME HERE. SO THANK YOU.
>> I WOULD LIKE TO SAY ALSO THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING WITH US AND PUSHING FORWARD AND MAKING THE EFFORT BECAUSE THAT SAYS A LOT ABOUT OUR STUDENTS IN THIS SCHOOL.
AND I LIKE ALL OF US UP HERE, ARE VERY OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU FOR STEPPING FORWARD. THANKS AGAIN.
I'D LIKE TO TAKE ON ALL OF YOU, IF I COULD.
UNFORTUNATELY, THAT CAN HAPPEN.
ANYWAY, THANKS AGAIN FOR BEING HERE AND YOU'RE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.
>> I SUGGESTED THAT WE JUST ROTATE YOU ALL THROUGH, [LAUGHTER] AT A TIME SO THAT WE CAN HAVE THE BENEFITS OF ALL OF YOUR TALENTS.
I'D LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR STEPPING UP BECAUSE YOU'RE ALL LEADERSHIP KIDS, YOU'RE ALL INVOLVED.
YOU HAVE A LOT ON YOUR PLATES AND IT'S OBVIOUS THAT YOU CARE ABOUT THE SCHOOL AND THAT YOU CARE ABOUT THE YOUNGER KIDS AS WELL AS THE HIGH SCHOOL.
I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO GO WITH A ROTATION SYSTEM, BUT SINCE WE CAN'T, I'D LIKE TO SAY AGAIN, THANK YOU SO MUCH BECAUSE IT IS AN EXTRA JOB THAT YOU'RE TAKING ON AND I APPRECIATE YOUR WILLINGNESS TO STEP UP AND VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME.
>> WE'D LIKE TO MAKE A MOTION SO THAT WE CAN VOTE. GO AHEAD.
I MAKE A MOTION THAT WE HOW DO YOU SAY THAT? A POINT. I KNOW YOU ALL BY FIRST NAME.
HARLEN MALLEY BE THE STUDENT BOARD MEMBER.
>> SO IT HAS BEEN PUT FORTH THAT WE APPOINT HARLEN MALLEY AS THE NEW STUDENT REP FOR THE FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING HI.
>> ALL OPPOSED. CONGRATULATIONS, HARLEN AND WELCOME TO THE BOARD.
JUST AS A MATTER OF REFERENCE, YOU WILL BE SWORN IN AT OUR NEXT MEETING, AND WE'LL BE IN CONTACT WITH YOU WITH INFORMATION AND SUCH ABOUT THAT.
[01:10:01]
AGAIN, THANK YOU TO ALL THE CANDIDATES FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION.WE HEARD SOME THINGS WE'VE DEFINITELY TAKEN NOTES ON THAT WE WANT TO FOLLOW UP.
WE'VE TALKED TO RISKY ABOUT FOLLOWING UP ON AND TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO JOIN HER SUPERINTENDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE. THANK YOU AGAIN.
WITH THAT, I WILL DECLARE THIS SPECIAL MEETING ADJOURNED AND WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A FIVE MINUTE RECESS AND THEN WE'LL START OUR REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING.
THANK YOU, EVERYONE. [APPLAUSE]
