THANK YOU FOR JOINING US WHETHER LIVE OR ONLINE.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS SPECIAL MEETING IS TO INTERVIEW OUR CANDIDATES FOR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE SCHOOL BOARD, AND TO SUBSEQUENTLY SELECT A STUDENT TO SERVE IN THAT CAPACITY FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS.

WE ARE PLEASED TO HAVE EIGHT APPLICANTS FOR THE POSITION, AND LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM EACH OF THEM THIS EVENING.

JUST A COUPLE OF REMINDERS FOR EVERYBODY, IF YOU DO NEED TO USE THE EXIT, THE DOORS THAT YOU CAME IN, AND IF YOU NEED THE RESTROOM, THEY'RE OUT THE HALL AND TO YOUR LEFT.

MANY YEARS AGO, I WAS SITTING IN A SIMILAR SEAT ANSWERING QUESTIONS WHEN I WAS LOOKING TO BE APPOINTED TO THE BOARD MYSELF SO I KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE.

BUT AS GABBY SAID SO ELOQUENTLY WHEN SHE CAME IN, YOU GUYS ARE ALL WELL QUALIFIED AND WE'RE LUCKY TO HAVE EIGHT APPLICANTS SUCH AS YOURSELF.

THIS ISN'T THE ONLY WAY THAT YOU CAN SERVE AS FAR AS INFLUENCING WHAT'S HAPPENING WITHIN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND IN YOUR SCHOOL.

TONIGHT, WHAT WE'D LIKE TO DO IS WE'D LIKE TO START OUT.

WE'RE GOING TO ASK A SERIES OF QUESTIONS.

EVERYONE WILL GET THE SAME QUESTIONS AND YOU'VE HAD THOSE BEFORE YOU.

THE ONE QUESTION YOU HAVEN'T HAD WHICH IS REALLY EASY.

>> I DON'T KNOW. I WANT TO BE PART OF THE SCHOOL BOARD BECAUSE I WANT TO SPEAK UP FOR THOSE THAT CAN'T AND ARE TOO SCARED TO SPEAK UP BECAUSE I WAS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT WERE TOO SCARED TO SPEAK UP, AND I KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO NOT BE ABLE TO SPEAK UP TO ADULTS.

>> OKAY. MY MOTIVATION IS JUST EXPERIENCES I'VE HAD IN THE PAST ON NOT BEING ABLE TO GET MY VOICE OUT THERE AND KNOWING THAT MY FAMILY HASN'T.

I JUST THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR ME AND OTHERS JUST AROUND ME AND IN MY LIFE. THANK YOU.

I'M A PART OF OUR TENNIS TEAM AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, I'M IN ASB; I'VE BEEN IN ASB SINCE MIDDLE SCHOOL, I'VE BEEN A PART OF LEADERSHIP SINCE MIDDLE SCHOOL, I'M THE SOUTH ASIAN CLUB PRESIDENT AT OUR SCHOOL, I LIKE TUTORING AFTER SCHOOL WITH SOME OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS.

I HELP OUT AT CASCADIA AFTER SCHOOL.

I'M REALLY ALL AROUND IN FERNDALE AND I'M REALLY INVOLVED IN SCHOOL.

THAT'S ONE OF MY BIGGEST PRIORITIES.

I TAKE A LOT OF AP CLASSES AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.

BY BEING A PART OF SO MANY DIFFERENT GROUPS, I FEEL THE NEED TO REPRESENT THEM.

I'M A PART OF SO MANY PEOPLE AND I FEEL I SHOULD BE ABLE TO SPEAK UP FOR THEM.

I FEEL LIKE I WOULD HAVE A GREAT SAY ON WHAT ISSUES PEOPLE ARE FACING IN OUR COMMUNITY. THANK YOU.

WHAT REALLY MOTIVATED ME TO WANT TO

BE A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER IS OUR SCHOOL'S REPRESENTATIVES NOW.

THEIR POSITION AT OUR SCHOOL EVEN WHEN THEY'RE NOT IN THIS ROOM DOING MEETINGS, IT REALLY IS PROMINENT EVEN AT OUR SCHOOL.

EVEN WHEN THEY'RE NOT HERE, THEY'RE ALWAYS DOING SOMETHING ELSE AND IT REALLY MOTIVATED ME SEEING THEM SPEAKING UP FOR OTHERS AND OUT FOR OTHERS TO MAKE ME WANT TO DO THAT, AND THOSE PEOPLE ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO ME ALSO. THANK YOU.

I'M ALSO INVOLVED IN ASB.

I WAS RECENTLY ELECTED AS OUR JUNIOR CLASS PRESIDENT.

I'M ALSO INVOLVED IN NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY.

I WAS RECENTLY ELECTED AS OUR VICE PRESIDENT.

I DO LEADERSHIP AND I'VE DONE THEATER SINCE I WAS ABOUT SEVEN SO I'VE QUITE INVOLVED IN THAT COMMUNITY.

I ALSO DO CHOIR.

I'VE DONE CHOIR SINCE THE BEGINNING OF FRESHMAN YEAR AND I'VE BEEN SECTION LEADER AND MORALE OFFICER.

OUTSIDE OF OUR COMMUNITY, I'M VERY INVOLVED WITH MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND JUST GETTING OUT OF NATURE AND TO OTHER COMMUNITIES.

I ALSO DO CHEER AT HIGH SCHOOL.

I'VE STARTED LAST YEAR AND IT WAS A GREAT DECISION TO GET INVOLVED WITH A BUNCH OF NEW KIND OF PEOPLE.

ONE OF MY BIG MOTIVATORS TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE STUDENT SCHOOL BOARD IS TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE FEELS LIKE THEY HAVE A PLACE WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY.

WE'RE ALL VERY INVOLVED IN OUR OWN LIVES IN TRYING TO GET SOMEWHERE AND JUST GET THINGS DONE, CHECK OFF OUR TO DO LIST, BUT I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE AND MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE FEELS VALUED AND EVERY EXPERIENCE THAT THEY EXPERIENCE MATTERS AND HOLDS A PLACE WITHIN OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES AS WELL.

IT'S A VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF MY PEERS AND THE PEOPLE THAT I SURROUND MYSELF WITH FEEL LIKE THEY'RE AN IMPORTANT PART OF MY LIFE AND THAT I CAN PUT FORTH THEIR NEEDS AND THEIR WANTS AND THEIR EXPERIENCES THAT THEY LONG FOR AT THE SAME STANDARD THAT I HOLD MY OWN EXPERIENCES.

THAT'S A VERY BIG MOTIVATOR I HAVE FOR THIS POSITION. THANK YOU.

I FEEL LIKE I CAN LEARN MANY VALUABLE THINGS THAT I COULD TAKE ON WITH ME TO THE FUTURE.

BEING PART OF THE SCHOOL BOARD, YOU ARE REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS OF FHS AND I WANT TO BE ABLE TO SHINE LIGHT ON PROBLEMS. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK UP FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T AND I THINK BEING PART OF THE SCHOOL BOARD IS A GREAT WAY TO DO THAT.

I PLAY TENNIS, I'M INVOLVED IN THE ORCHESTRA AND THE CHOIR, I WAS JUST ELECTED SECRETARY OF NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY, AND I DO THEATER.

THE REASON THAT I WOULD LIKE TO BECOME A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER IS I WANT TO GIVE MY FELLOW STUDENTS A VOICE.

I KNOW THAT'S PRETTY GENERIC, BUT I FEEL LIKE GIVING THE STUDENTS A VOICE IS ONE OF THE BIG REASONS SCHOOL BOARDS EXIST.

THEY ARE TO REALLY HELP US GET WHAT WE THINK WE NEED OUT OF OUR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES AND JUST DO THE BEST WE CAN FOR OURSELVES AND PREPARE OURSELVES FOR THE FUTURE.

THAT'S WHY I'D LIKE TO BECOME A SCHOOL BOARD REPRESENTATIVE.

I RAN FOR PRESIDENT, I DID NOT MAKE IT, BUT I'LL RUN AGAIN NEXT YEAR.

I AM IN THEATER, ORCHESTRA.

WHEN IT COMES TO WANTING TO BE A PART OF THE SCHOOL BOARD, WHAT REALLY MOTIVATES ME IS SEEING HOW MANY PEOPLE WE HAVE IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, ALL THE WAY FROM THE SENIORS WHO ARE GRADUATING TO THE PRESCHOOLERS WHO ARE GETTING USED TO HAVING TO DO STUFF WITH THEIR DAY.

I WANT TO GO AND MAKE SURE THAT EACH PERSON THERE HAS THEIR NEEDS MET AND IS ABLE TO FEEL WELCOME AND THOUGHT ABOUT.

I'VE GOT A SIBLING ALL THE WAY DOWN IN FIRST GRADE AND SHE IS ADORABLE.

I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT EVEN SOMEONE AS YOUNG AS HER, 7, 6, ALL OF THEM ARE ABLE TO GO AND NOT BE IGNORED BECAUSE THEY'RE SO YOUNG, AND MAKE SURE THAT EVERY DECISION IS GOING TO BENEFIT BECAUSE I ALSO HIGHLY VALUE MY ACADEMICS.

I DO WHAT I CAN TO PUSH MYSELF AND I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT NOT EVERYBODY STANDS BY THOSE VIEWS, AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT NOT ONLY THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO PUSH, BUT ALSO THOSE WHO ARE SATISFIED WITH HOW THEY WANT TO LEARN OR THOSE WHO NEED EXTRA ASSISTANCE, EACH PERSON, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE THOUGHT ABOUT AND MAKE SURE THAT NOBODY FEELS LIKE THERE IS NO PLACE FOR THEM, THAT THEY'RE BEING EXCLUDED BECAUSE OF DIFFERENT NEEDS OR DIFFERENT THEOLOGY, COLOR OF SKIN, ALL OF THESE THINGS, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO BIAS OR ANY SORT OF EXCLUSION BASED ON.

I WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE HAS A VOICE, IS HEARD, AND FEELS WELCOME.

>> WELL, SOME SKILLS THAT I HAVE, I THINK I WORK VERY WELL WITH OTHERS AND I'M VERY OPTIMISTIC AND I THINK I CAN BE ENTHUSIASTIC, BUT I ALSO HAVE MY OWN FEELINGS.

SOME EXPERIENCES I HAVE REALLY JUST LIKE WHAT I SAID BEFORE, BEING IN TRACK AND LEADERSHIP, THOSE HELP A LOT.

THERE'S KIDS THAT ARE YOUNGER THAN YOU AND THERE ARE KIDS THAT ARE OLDER THAN YOU, THERE'S PEOPLE THAT ARE DIFFERENT THAN YOU, SO THEY ALL HAVE THEIR OWN OPINIONS AND YOU GET TO LISTEN TO ALL OF THEM.

I THINK THAT'S NICE.

>> SKILLS WISE, I WOULD SAY I'M VERY HARD WORKING AND VERY DEDICATED TO EVERYTHING THAT I DO.

LIKE I MENTIONED, I'M A PART OF SO MANY THINGS IN FERNDALE, AND I ALWAYS GIVE 100% TO EVERYTHING THAT I DO.

I ALWAYS TAKE PRIDE IN EVERYTHING THAT I DO BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO DO JUST A HALF JOB OF IT.

BY ME BEING IN SO MANY LEADERSHIP POSITIONS, I'M NEXT YEAR'S EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE ENTIRE SCHOOL.

I'M CURRENTLY OUR SOPHOMORE CLASS PRESIDENT.

I HAVE BEEN IN THE POSITION OF TALKING WITH OTHERS AND BEING A GOOD COMMUNICATOR, WHETHER THAT BE WITH STAFF, ADMIN, OTHER STUDENTS.

I THINK ALL THESE EXPERIENCES OF ME BEING IN LEADERSHIP MAKE ME A GREAT CANDIDATE FOR THE STUDENT SCHOOL BOARD BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH SO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF PEOPLE AND YOU HAVE TO TALK WITH THEM AND COLLABORATING WITH OTHERS, NOT JUST LIKE PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY, BUT THE PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD.

I THINK THAT THOSE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES MAKE A VERY GOOD PART OF ME. THANK YOU.

>> SOME OF MY SKILLS ARE THAT I'M REALLY RESOURCEFUL.

I'VE DONE PUBLIC SPEAKING TO THE FFA AND I HAVE VERY GOOD INTERPERSONAL CONNECTION SKILLS, AND I'M GOOD WITH TIME MANAGEMENT, AND I THINK I'M PRETTY WELL SPOKEN, AND I'M PRETTY OPTIMISTIC TOO.

>> EXCUSE MY VOICE. I THINK THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILLS THAT I CAN BRING TO THE SCHOOL BOARD POSITION WOULD BE MY WILLINGNESS TO WORK WITH DIFFERENT KIND OF PEOPLE AND MY ABILITY TO TRY NEW THINGS.

I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK THAT WHEN YOU'RE COMING INTO A NEW POSITION OR A NEW EXPERIENCE, YOU'RE GOING TO WALK IN AND BE LIKE, I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I'M DOING AND I'M GOING TO DO IT SO PERFECT ON THE FIRST TRY, BUT I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THE TENACITY AND DETERMINATION THAT IT TAKES TO BE ABLE TO WORK THROUGH THE IMPERFECTIONS.

OH, MY GOODNESS, EXCUSE ME.

THE IMPERFECTIONS AND THE OBSTACLES THAT ARE GOING TO COME ALONG WITH TRYING A NEW POSITION OR A NEW SKILL OR A NEW LEADERSHIP ROLE, WHATEVER THAT MAY BE, THE DETERMINATION AND TENACITY THAT YOU HAVE TO HAVE IS WHAT'S GOING TO SPEAK VOLUMES OVER YOUR INITIAL ENTRANCE SKILL.

WHEN YOU'RE COMING INTO A NEW POSITION SUCH AS THIS ONE, YOU'RE GOING TO BE WORKING WITH ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS, DIFFERENT AGES, DIFFERENT SKILL SETS.

I THINK YOUR ABILITY TO WORK WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE THAT DIFFER FROM YOUR OWN IS A VERY IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE SKILL THAT YOU NEED TO HAVE.

YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO WORK WITH A BUNCH OF LITTLE KIDS, WHICH I'VE HAD TO DO BEFORE THROUGH CHEER, THE AMOUNT OF YOUTH SKILLS CAMPS THAT WE'VE HAD TO DO, AND THE AMOUNT OF LITTLE KINDERGARTNERS THAT I'VE GOTTEN TO PLAY WITH HAS BEEN A VERY GREAT EXPERIENCE, BUT ALSO A VERY BIG LEARNING EXPERIENCE THAT I'VE HAD TO NAVIGATE.

I'VE ALSO HELPED A LOT.

WITH MY PARENTS, I'VE HELPED MY PARENTS WITH THEIR OWN JOBS, SO I'VE GOTTEN TO WORK WITH A BUNCH OF OLDER ADULTS AND I'VE GOTTEN TO BE INTRODUCED TO A BUNCH OF NEW PERSPECTIVES AND NEW WAYS OF WORK THAT HAVE OPENED MY MIND TO NEW WAYS OF THINKING THAT I THINK COULD BE USEFUL FOR POSITIONS SUCH AS THIS ONE. THANK YOU.

>> AS FOR EXPERIENCES, I USED TO BE PART OF A PROGRAM CALLED CIVIL AIR PATROL AND IT'S BASICALLY LINKED WITH THE AIR FORCE.

I WENT TO TONS OF DIFFERENT CAMPS ABOUT LEADERSHIP, AND I WAS PROMOTED TO STAFF SERGEANT.

I WAS LEADING A BUNCH OF PEOPLE AT ONCE AND IT TAUGHT ME LOTS ABOUT LEADERSHIP AND DISCIPLINE.

I WENT TO AN ENCAMPMENT FOR EIGHT DAYS AND IT WAS BRUTAL, BUT IT TAUGHT ME SO MUCH.

SOME THINGS THAT I COULD BRING TO THE TABLE IS OBVIOUSLY MY STUDENT PERSPECTIVE.
