[1. CONVENE]
[00:00:07]
HAPPY TO HAVE SOME MEMBERS OF THE NATION WITH US TONIGHT AND THEIR BOARD OF EDUCATION.
SO AT THIS POINT, I'M GOING TO GO AHEAD AND.
WOULD LIKE TO GET THINGS STARTED.
AND THE FIRST PART OF THAT WILL BE ADOPTING OUR AGENDA.
[2. ADOPTION OF AGENDA [GC-4.7]]
AND SO IF I COULD GET A MOTION TO SUCH THAT WOULD BE.I'LL MAKE A MOTION TO ADOPT THE AGENDA AS WRITTEN.
OKAY, SO NOW THE MOVE TO ADOPT THE AGENDA FOR THIS SPECIAL MEETING AS PRESENTED.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
ALL OPPOSED? SO OUR AGENDA HAS BEEN ADOPTED.
AND WITH THAT, WE'LL GO AHEAD AND MOVE INTO ITEM 3.01, WHICH IS A PRESENTATION BY THE DISTRICT
[3. GENERAL]
IN REGARDS TO HOW OUR STUDENTS ARE FARING IN FERNDALE SCHOOLS.AND FOR THIS I'LL TURN IT OVER TO [INAUDIBLE].
WELCOME. AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.
I'M GOING TO HAND MICROPHONE OVER TO [INAUDIBLE] WITH US TO SHARE A SONG AND THEY ARE JUST LEARNING.
AND SO THAT'S ONE THING THAT WE HAVE TO KEEP IN MIND AND.
I'M NOT TEACHING THEM HOW TO DO THIS.
THEY'RE THE ONES THAT HAVE TAKEN THE LEAD.
GETTING THE . JUST KNOW AND UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS FROM THEIR HEART.
ONE OF THE WAYS THAT WE LOOK OUR.
OUR PEOPLE. GET THEM TO UNDERSTAND.
AND. IT'S A WIDE VARIETY OF STUDENTS, SOME OF THEM SENIORS, SOME OF THEM JUNIORS.
[00:06:50]
. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO THE SONG THIS EVENING [INAUDIBLE].LIKE YOU GUYS LETTING US COME HERE AND SHARE OUR SONGS.
I FIGURE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE.
ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED LISTENING TO YOU.
WELL, IN THE MORNINGS WE JUST LIKE WE GATHER IN A CIRCLE EVERY MORNING.
SO IT'S LIKE A SORT OF LIKE A PRACTICE IN A WAY.
SORT OF LIKE IT'S A WAY TO START UP OUR DAY.
IT GENUINELY HELPS ME GET THROUGH MY DAY BECAUSE I JUST LIKE I MEAN, IT'S JUST LIKE IT'S A PLACE TO GO TO WHERE YOU JUST LIKE WHERE YOU FEEL LIKE IT'S PART.
THE MORNING GATHERING IS WHERE WE SHARE OUR SONGS AND WE PRAY FOR.
INTO OUR HEART. WE'RE LETTING YOU ALL GO.
[00:10:03]
AND EVEN THE BOYS LEARNING HOW TO SING.MOST OF THEM DON'T REALLY KNOW HOW TO SING.
MOST OF THEM EVEN TAKE BREAKS, EVEN I[INAUDIBLE] WE'RE PRAYING FOR EVERYONE TO STOP TAKING AWAY THIS SPOT.
REMARKABLE. WE'RE JUST REALLY HAPPY THAT THIS IS OUR PLACE.
AND WE STARTED THIS [INAUDIBLE] THE END OF LAST YEAR AND WE SEEN THE IMPROVEMENTS AT THE END OF OUR YEAR.
AMERICAN STUDENTS HERE REALLY, REALLY HELP THEM GET THEIR GRADES UP AND THEN THEY HAVE THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN IT COMES TO WHAT WE COULD DO, BECAUSE IT REALLY THIS BUSINESS OF PROSPERITY MAKES THEM FEEL GOOD.
BECAUSE MOST SCHOOL STUDENTS, THEY GET.
DEPRESSION, THAT THEY JUST DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE ON [INAUDIBLE].
AND AS SOON AS WE START DOING [INAUDIBLE] THEY'RE JUST HAPPY.
EVEN I WELCOME NON-NATIVE STUDENTS TO COME IN.
NON-NATIVE STUDENTS AND STAFF.
EVERY TIME I SEE ONE, I JUST SMILE.
JUST MAKES ME FEEL GOOD ABOUT HOW WE HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER IN THIS.
IT MADE ME FEEL COMFORTABLE OR.
AND WHEN I WAS A FRESHMAN, I TRULY DIDN'T FEEL WELCOME HERE.
AND I MADE IT THROUGH AND PROUD OF MYSELF THAT I GOT LONELY AND.
THIS ONE GUY WHO IS JUST LIKE, YES, [INAUDIBLE].
AND DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT ME WHEN YOU ENTER GENERATIONS OF [INAUDIBLE].
YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT.
IF IF IT WASN'T FOR THEM, IT WASN'T JUST TO GIVE ME A LITTLE PUSH.
I WANT TO HELP. GET TO WHERE I'M AT TODAY.
WE WANT TO HELP THEM TO FIGHT FOR.
SO. IF IT WASN'T FOR YOU, WE WOULDN'T BE DOING THIS TODAY. SO I WAS THINKING ABOUT NOT COMING TO THIS TODAY, BUT I'M ACTUALLY THANKFUL TO COME HERE TO SING WITH MY COUSINS AND FRIENDS.
IF I WASN'T HERE, MY DAY WOULD HAVE BEEN A LITTLE BIT WORSE.
BUT AS MY NATIVE SPIRIT ACTUALLY FEELS GREAT.
SHE MADE ME KIND OF DO THIS, BUT IT'S REALLY FUN.
COME HERE AND LET MY DARK SPIRIT GO AND BE FREE A LITTLE BIT AND BE A LITTLE BIT STRONG.
I'M INCREDIBLY PROUD OF THE PROGRESS WE'RE MAKING.
THIS IS THEM TEACHING EACH OTHER THE SONGS, THE DANCES.
[00:15:02]
I WAS A GRADUATE FROM FERNDALE HIGH SCHOOL.WE DIDN'T HAVE A LOT OF SUPPORT FOR OUR NATIVE STUDENTS WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL.
THIS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULDN'T EVEN THINK OF 20 YEARS AGO WHEN I GRADUATED.
IT'S AMAZING AND WE'RE INCREDIBLY PROUD.
WE GRABBED THE POLES, THERE'S EIGHT POLES, AND THEN AT THE END OF THE MONTH, WE TAKE THEM DOWN, PICK EIGHT STUDENTS WHO THEY GIVE A STAFF MEMBER THAT HAS MADE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LIFE.
THAT'S OUR HIGHEST THANKING THEM EXTENDED TO THEM AND TO OUR NATIVE COMMUNITY.
WE'RE MAKING WE'RE MAKING STRIDES FROM 20 YEARS AGO.
AND I'M GLAD WE WASN'T LIKE THIS WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL.
WE HAD TO FIGHT AROUND AND, YOU KNOW, WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE THE PEACE AND MOVE FORWARD NOW.
I FEEL LIKE WE DO MORE AND THE KIDS ARE PROUD AND WE CAN APPRECIATE IT.
THANK YOU. IT'S BEEN AMAZING, EVEN THOUGH WHAT WE NEED AND WE HAVE JUST NOT IN MY HEAD BECAUSE I HAVE SOME IDEAS, BUT NOBODY IN POWER TO BACK US UP.
AND I MEAN, HE'S REALLY BEEN A BIG HELP TO US IN OUR NATIVE PROGRAM.
YOU MIGHT HAVE, YOU KNOW, GO UP TO HIM.
AND THEY SAID, YOUR KIDS NEED CULTURE IN THEIR SCHOOL.
AND JJ SAID, THE VERY NEXT DAY, LET'S START WORKING TOGETHER.
AND THE DATA SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.
WE DID IT FOR THE LAST TWO WEEKS OF SCHOOL AND ATTENDANCE WAS DOWN AND REFERRALS WERE DOWN.
SO I'M VERY FORTUNATE, VERY, VERY PROUD OF THESE KIDS FOR STEPPING UP.
IF IT'S ALL VOLUNTEER, WOULD YOU LIKE TO PICK ON WHEN [INAUDIBLE] BECAUSE EVERYBODY ELSE WAS ONE STEP UP I, AGAIN, WE WANT TO THANK YOU FOR SHARING, LISTENING TO THE WORDS THAT WE HAVE TO SAY AND THE DIFFERENCES FROM 20 YEARS AGO TO TODAY.
AND, YOU KNOW, THINKING BACK FIVE YEARS, WE WERE SLOWLY WALKING IN THIS DIRECTION.
THE ADMINISTRATION IN THE HIGH SCHOOL.
BUT, YOU KNOW, AS WE CONTINUE TO GROW AND CHANGE, THE ONLY WAY THAT WE PROGRESS AS A PEOPLE IS TO.
LET PEOPLE COME IN AND SEE WHAT WE'RE DOING.
GOOD MORNING. IT'S ALWAYS GOOD.
SAY, HEY, COME ON, COME JOIN THE CIRCLE.
AND THAT'S THE CHANGE THAT REALLY NEEDS TO HAPPEN FOR PEOPLE TO SEE US, FOR WHO WE ARE, FOR THEM TO SEE SOME OF THE SONGS, LISTEN TO SOME OF THE SONGS, SING AND DANCE, AND IT'S REALLY EXCITING.
WE'VE HAD POSITIVE RESPONSE FROM.
THOSE THAT HAVE COME IN AND VISITED.
FOR A WHILE. YOU KNOW, WE KIND.
GOT A LITTLE FLAK FROM SOME OF THE TEACHERS BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WE WERE DOING.
BECAUSE THE QUESTION, WHAT DO YOU DO? HOW CAN YOU STOP ENGAGING AND TAKING SO LONG AND TALKING AND ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS? SO OVER THE, SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, WE STOPPED AND WE TALKED TO STAFF MEMBERS, TEACHERS AND EXPLAIN WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO HERE.
[00:20:05]
AND THE ABSOLUTE BEST THING THAT WE COULD DO FOR OUR PEOPLE IS TO ALLOW.TO GET THEMSELVES. I MEAN, SHARE THEIR SONGS WITH EACH OTHER.
SHARE THE DANCE AND IT'S SO UPLIFTING.
CHANGES OUR PERSON, PERSONALITIES FROM ONE DAY TO THE NEXT.
AND IF WE DID NOT HAVE THIS, THERE'S ALL SORTS OF TROUBLE THAT WE CAN GET INTO.
AND MAKING THAT CHOICE TO CONTINUE WITH THIS EVERY SINGLE DAY, IT IS OPTIONAL.
I THINK THE LAST LIST THAT I LOOKED AT THERE'S PROBABLY AT LEAST 40 STUDENTS THAT COME.
ON AVERAGE, WE GET ABOUT 40 STUDENTS EVERY MORNING AND I TELL THEM EVERY MORNING MY EXPECTATIONS.
WE'RE GLAD YOU GOT 4 MINUTES TO TALK.
AND THEY HAVE TO BE VERY RESPECTFUL UPON RETURN.
AND IF THEY'RE IN MY CLASS, THEY HAVE TO BE IN THE CLASS.
THIS IS JUST A PREVIEW OF WHAT WE DO, EACH WITH THREE OR FOUR COLUMNS EVERY MORNING.
AND, YOU KNOW, THAT IS ON THE RIGHT FOOT, GIVES IT TO US AND.
I SUPPOSE ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE WANT TO DO IS REALLY SHARE WITH YOU SOME OF OUR STUDENT VOICES.
WE HAVE QUITE A FEW OF OUR STAFF REPRESENTED, SO THANK YOU AGAIN STUDENTS, YOU'RE AMAZING, BUT JUST THINK THEIR STORIES AND THINGS SUPER POWERFUL.
I'M SURE THE LAST PERSON YOU'D EXPECT TO HEAR FROM TONIGHT IS YOUR NINTH GRADE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL.
BUT THAT IS JJ JENSEN FROM THE NAMI GLADSTONE FAMILY FROM SQUARE VILLAGE FIRST NATION.
IT'S A GREAT HONOR TO SERVE BELOVED PEOPLE, THE COAST SALISH PEOPLE AS WELL.
BUT YEAH, WELL, YOU BROUGHT ME HERE.
FAITH BROUGHT ME HERE, [INAUDIBLE] BROUGHT ME HERE.
BUT THAT WAS PART OF THE COMMON PART OF THE CONVERSATION.
WHEN I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO JOIN FERNDALE.
I CAME FROM DOWN IN MARYSVILLE WORKING WITH TULALIP AND THE WORK THAT WE DO, WE CALL IT.
WE CALL IT CHANGING AND CHANGING THE NARRATIVE.
YOU HEARD YOU HEARD ME TALK ABOUT IT 20 YEARS AGO WHEN WE WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL.
THINGS WERE A LOT DIFFERENT FOR OUR PARENTS, FOR OUR GRANDPARENTS, FOR NATIVE, NATIVE STUDENTS, 20, 40, 60, 100S OF YEARS AGO. YOU KNOW, IT HASN'T.
PUBLIC SCHOOL HASN'T ALWAYS BEEN AN EASY OR GREAT PLACE.
WHEN I CAME ON BOARD, I'M SURE THE BOARD'S AWARE OF SOME STATISTICS THAT WE'VE SEEN COMING OUT OF COVID WITH OUR STUDENT RESPONSES TO DO YOU LIKE TO COME TO SCHOOL? WHEN YOU GO TO SCHOOL, YOU FEEL LIKE YOU BELONG.
THE ANSWERS TO THOSE QUESTIONS FOR ALL STUDENTS IN FERNDALE WEREN'T GREAT, BUT FOR OUR NATIVE STUDENTS AND OUR STUDENTS OF COLOR, THEY WERE EVEN LESS GREAT. SO THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING HERE, RECLAIMING PRACTICES, YOU KNOW, THE DRUMMING, SINGING DANCES, RECLAIMING LANGUAGE.
NOW IT ALL VERY, ALL GRADE LEVELS AS WELL.
NATIVE AMERICAN FAMILY AND I HAD ABOUT 100 PLUS PEOPLE LAST MONTH, THE WEDNESDAY BEFORE THE LONG NOVEMBER BREAK.
[00:25:01]
IT'S AN HONOR. AND WE ENJOY TALKING ABOUT IT AND SHARING PRACTICES WITH OTHERS.ANYHOW, I THOUGHT ABOUT THIS ALL NIGHT.
SO I'M GOING TO PUT THIS MIKE DOWN.
YEAH, I REALLY DO LIKE THE THE IDEA OF THE JOINT BOARD MEETINGS.
HONESTLY, AS AN ADMINISTRATOR, I DO.
I APPRECIATE THE ACCOUNTABILITY.
I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE BEING RESPONSIVE TO OUR LOVELY, LOVELY TRIBE.
BUT YEAH, JUST TO START, YOU KNOW, WE WORK CLOSELY WITH OUR LATINX PEERS AT SCHOOL.
AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENT UNION PACIFIC ISLANDER WANT TO START START A CLUB.
BUT AGAIN, YOU KNOW, MAKING MAKING SCHOOL A PLACE WHERE WE BELONG.
JJ, THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE SHARED.
AND THEN OBADIAH UP IN THE BACK OVER THERE IS ONE OF OUR ELEMENTARY PRINCIPALS.
THAT'S WHY I SAY DON'T GO ANYWHERE YET.
ALONZO'S SPEECH PROJECT WHERE? THAT'S. GOOD AFTERNOON.
AND OUR MAIN GOAL IS TO SERVICE YOUTH, AGED STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES SUPPORTING THEIR MENTAL HEALTH, CULTURE AND ACADEMICS.
WE'VE PARTNERED WITH A LOT OF THE FERNDALE SCHOOLS, AS YOU KNOW.
I WORK MANY MORE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND WE KIND OF HELPED START JUMP START THE ELDER TALKS, BRINGING SPEAKERS AND THE ELDERS INTO THE SCHOOLS TO TALK WITH THE KIDS.
IT'S KIND OF DECOLONIZING EDUCATION, MIXING IT WITH BOTH.
WE ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE SERVICES.
AND AS FAR AS ONE ON ONE MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING, ONE ON ONE PEER COUNSELING.
WE SUPPORT A LOT OF THE CULTURAL REVITALIZATION AND SUPPORTING THE KIDS WITH WHATEVER THEY CAN AND ANY REQUEST THAT THEY HAVE FOR CULTURAL OR MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS.
WE DO OUR VERY BEST TO PROVIDE THEM WITH WHATEVER WE CAN.
SO THAT'S KIND OF MY PORTION OF SUPPORTING THE YOUTH IN THE SCHOOLS.
BUT IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONS OR ANYTHING THAT'S OPEN TO THEM.
GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS DAVID WEBER AND IT IS MY FIRST TO BE THE PRINCIPAL T SKYLINE COLLEGE.
I ALSO WAS ABLE TO SERVE FOR THREE YEARS AT [INAUDIBLE] SCHOOL.
SO I JUST HAVE A FEW MORE MEETINGS WITH OUR LEADERSHIP FRIENDS.
WE HAVE SOME REALLY EXCITING THINGS HAPPENING IN OUR SCHOOL.
AND WE ARE. WE WELCOME THE MUSLIM ACADEMY INTO OUR BUILDING ON MONDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS.
AND THEY PRESENT THE INFORMATION TO THE STUDENTS AND THEY CONNECT WITH THE STUDENTS.
IT HASN'T REALLY, REALLY HELPED.
WE ARE ALSO. WE DON'T HAVE AN AVAILABLE CLASSROOM FOR THEM TO BE IN.
[00:30:01]
SO WE HAVE AN ELEVATED COMMON AREA.JUST THINKING ABOUT THAT THEME EVERY MORNING AND MAKING SURE THAT ALL OF OUR STUDENTS, ALL OF OUR FAMILY MEMBERS, EVERYONE FEELS LIKE THIS IS THEIR SCHOOL, THIS IS THEIR DISTRICT, AND THEY BELONG HERE.
LAST MONTH WE WERE ABLE TO HAVE A LITTLE SILLY AND PART OF OUR ASSEMBLY.
WE TALKED ABOUT BEING INTERESTING AND WE ALSO MENTIONED NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH AND CYNTHIA AND KIANA HAVE OUR STUDENTS COME UP AND THEY MADE SOME PRESENTATIONS.
WE HAVE SOME SOME OF THE VISITORS.
FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS, KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SECOND GRADE.
AND THEN WE RECORDED IT AND THE OTHER STUDENTS THIRD THROUGH FIFTH GOT TO SEE THEIR CLASSROOMS. IT WAS JUST SO AMAZING TO WATCH THE STUDENTS AS THEY SAT IN THE GYMNASIUM.
AND WHILE THE OLDER STUDENTS WERE SAYING, WE HAVE A FIFTH GRADER WHO JUST CAME TO OUR SCHOOL THIS YEAR FROM THE [INAUDIBLE] SCHOOL AND HAS STRUGGLED QUITE A BIT TRYING TO FIND HIS WAY AND FEEL LIKE HE WAS HE HAD A HOME AND HE WAS OUT THERE DANCING IN THE AIR IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SECOND GRADE POPULATION.
AND THEN WE HAD OUR LITTLE STUDENTS THAT WERE RAISING THEIR HANDS AND REPEATING.
AND IT WAS JUST A REALLY WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE.
SO THOSE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING IN ELEMENTARY.
ANY QUESTIONS OR ANYTHING ELSE? I MEAN, IF THERE WAS ANY SKYLINE TODAY.
BUT EAGLE RIDGE ALSO ALSO HAS A LITTLE BIT OF A.
AND I WISH NOT. THANK YOU, OBADIAH.
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, BEEN INTRODUCED.
IN FACT, WE HAVE JUST OPENED A FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER IN ACTUALLY IN THIS BUILDING AT THE OTHER END IN THE WAY AND HAVE SOME EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES, PLANS.
AND THEN I'LL TRY TO KEEP IT SHORT AND [INAUDIBLE] HUNGRY.
I'M JUST THERE FROM THE [INAUDIBLE] NATION.
I'M NEW TO FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT THIS YEAR, AS THEY SAID, I'M PART OF THE FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER TEAM AND MY OFFICE INSPECTOR JUST GAVE THE KIDS A TOUR [INAUDIBLE].
GO VISIT THEM AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
SO NOW THEY KNOW WHERE MY HOME IS HERE.
IT'S A VERY NEW PART OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
IT JUST OPENED LIKE, YOU KNOW, MY POSITION IS STILL GROWING.
AND WE'RE GOING TO KEEP GROWING AND CHANGING UNTIL IT FITS FOR FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
[INAUDIBLE] AND I PRIMARILY WORK WITH THE NATIVE STUDENTS.
I DO WORK WITH ALL DISTRICT WIDE, BUT THE MAJORITY OF MY MY TIME HERE SO FAR HAS BEEN WORKING WITH NATIVE STUDENTS AND HELPING OUT AT ALL THE SCHOOLS.
I'VE BEEN OVER AT SKYLINE AND I THINK OAK RIDGE AND I VISITED BOTH.
AND RIGHT NOW I'M JUST GROWING RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE DISTRICT AND GETTING TO KNOW THE STUDENTS AND CHECKING TENDENCIES AND GRADES AND ALL THE STUDENTS WORKING ON OUTREACH FOR ALL OF OUR FAMILIES.
IT'S 631 STUDENTS IN FERNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT ARE IN OR THAT ARE IDENTIFIED IN THEIR ENROLLMENT FOR THE SCHOOL PAPERS.
IDENTIFIED AS NATIVE AMERICAN.
LASTLY, AND SO I TRIED TO GO THROUGH THE LIST.
REACHING OUT TO FAMILIES OR HOME VISITS JUST TO LET THEM KNOW THAT I'M HERE, THAT I CAN HELP WITH ANYTHING THAT I CAN TO HELP FAMILIES GET IN TOUCH WITH RESOURCES IF THEY NEEDED HELP, TRYING TO OVERCOME BARRIERS. IF IT'S SOMETHING THAT I CAN DO OR HELP POINT IN THE DIRECTION OF SOMEBODY THAT CAN.
[00:35:11]
WE'RE PLANNING ON DOING SOME EVENTS TO WELCOME FAMILIES TO DO CULTURAL ARTS SERIES IN THE SPRING.THAT'S STILL IN ROUGH PLANNING STAGES, BUT.
WE'RE HOPING THAT WE'LL HAVE SIX WEEKS WHERE FAMILIES CAN COME IN AND DO DIFFERENT ART PROJECTS.
AND THEN AT THE END OF THE SERIES TO DISPLAY ALL OF THE ARTWORK AND HAVE AN ART GALLERY JUST TO HAVE SOMETHING FUN WHERE FAMILIES COME IN AND PARTICIPATE.
BUT. SO I'LL BE HERE FOR FAMILIES.
THAT'S MY MAIN OBJECTIVE SO FAR, IS JUST TO BE THERE.
SO THAT'S MY MOTTO IS I'M JUST GOING TO BE THERE.
WHERE? WHEREVER IT FEELS LIKE I'M NEEDED.
SO, WRAP UP MY POSITION A LITTLE TIGHTER.
SO, LIKE, YOU HEAR LIKE AFTER SCHOOL HOURS, I'M REALLY FUZZY ON THE WHOLE CLASS.
THE FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER IS OPEN FROM 8 TO 4 MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY.
AND THERE'S A GROUP OF FOUR OF US THAT ARE HERE.
CATALINA BOYLE AND PATRICIA CURTIS.
AND SO ONE OF US WILL BE HERE FROM 4 TO 8 ALL THE TIME.
WE ALL HAVE OUR DIFFERENT CASE LOADS, BUT IT'LL BE OPEN ALL THE TIME.
FROM THERE WE CAN HELP WITH WITH SCHOOL SUPPLIES.
OR. IF YOU NEED HELP WITH PAPERWORK, SCHOOL PAPERWORK.
AND I CAN BRING DOWN SOME REASSURANCE THAT SAYS MORE OF WHAT WE DO HERE.
AND YEAH, BUT SO MONDAY TO FRIDAY IT'S FOUR.
AND THEN I THINK WE HAVE AN EMAIL THAT SAID.
CAN YOU REMIND ME WHAT THE FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER AT FERNDALE DOES FOR.
AND THE OTHER THING IS, BEGINNING JANUARY, MOVING FROM 10 TO 6 ON TUESDAYS, [INAUDIBLE].
THANK YOU, JESSICA. THANK YOU.
APPRECIATE IT. THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY THAT SPOKE.
AND THEN WE'LL COME BACK IN A MINUTE.
SO, YOU KNOW, SOME OF THE THINGS.
YES. PASTA? YES. WE'VE HAD A LOT ABOUT STUDENT VOICE TONIGHT.
AND INTERESTINGLY, A SLIGHT INCREASE FROM 2019 PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC TO LAST POINT.
BUT LIKE I SAID, WE KNOW WE HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO.
WE SHARED INFORMATION FROM OUR TEAMS. LIKE I SAID, WE'RE JUMPING AROUND A LITTLE BIT.
HERE'S SOME OF THE INTERESTING PIECES FOR US, AND I WILL SHARE THIS OUT WITH JANICE.
SHARE IT WITH THE LAMINATION BOARD AND ALSO YOU HAVE A COPY OF IT AND OUR HOPE TO USE OUR DATA ON OUR STUDENT ENROLLMENT SINCE FALL 2021 HAS DEFINITELY INCREASED FROM OUR NUMBERS.
AND LOOKING AT SITTING AROUND WITH ALL STUDENTS, SITTING AROUND PERCENTAGES OF PEOPLE.
[00:40:01]
AGAIN. I'M NOT GONNA GO INTO TOO MUCH DETAIL.IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, PLEASE STOP AND ASK.
BUT JUST TO SHARE SOME OF THE THE DATA AND THEN THE TABLE HERE, WE CAN SEE THAT OUR STUDENTS, FACULTY STRUGGLING COMING BACK FROM COVID.
YOU SEE THE IF YOU LOOK AT THE LAST JUST TO THE LEFT AND THE STUDENTS TO THE RIGHT, WE DROPPED OFF PRETTY SIGNIFICANTLY AND THEY'RE STRUGGLING TO COME BACK POST COVID.
AND THEY WANT TO COME TO SCHOOL.
HERE WITH SOME OF OUR REFERRAL DATA.
THIS SHOWS OUR PERCENT OF THE POPULATION OF REFERRALS.
SO THERE ARE SOME AREAS WHERE WE HAVE SOME SIGNIFICANT WORK TO DO.
THERE ARE SOME AREAS WHERE WE DO WELL AND THEN OTHER AREAS WHERE WE NEED TO REALLY DIG DEEPER.
SO OF OUR DATA, THIS SHOWS ALL OF OUR STUDENTS GRADUATION RATE ALONG THE RED LINE AND THEN OUR GRADUATION RATE OF STUDENTS GOING NATIVE [INAUDIBLE].
WE DON'T HAVE IT RELEASED YET FOR OUR SPRING 2022 GRADUATION DATA.
BUT LOOKING AT THE POSITIVE, WE HAVE RISEN SLIGHTLY IN BOTH GROUPS.
BUT THAT'S SENSITIVE, SO I DON'T WANT TO PUBLISH A DOCUMENT FOR THIS CYCLE.
SO AGAIN, SOME WORK TO DO TO CATCH UP.
AND THEY'RE LOOKING AT OUR HISTORY.
SO IF YOU LOOK AT THIS 2019 TO 2018, AGAIN, YOU CAN DIG INTO THIS A LITTLE BIT MORE WHEN YOU HAVE IT IN SHARING AND GENERALLY BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO TALK WITH YOU, CHRISTI.
AND I'M HAPPY TO KIND OF BEGIN WITH DEEPER WITH YOU AS A TEAM, IF YOU LIKE, THE LOOK IN THE 19-20, 20-21, AND THEN LOOKING AT LAST YEAR AND AGAIN, WE HAVE SOME WORK TO DO TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE OUR STUDENTS SAY THAT LOUD AND CLEAR.
WE HAVE SOME WORK TO DO TO HELP THEM FILL A GAP.
THEY CAN SEE THEMSELVES IN THE CURRICULUM, THAT THEY CAN SEE THEMSELVES WITHIN THEIR COURSES, AND THAT WE HELP THEM TO FIND THAT PLACE AND MAKE SURE THAT THEY GET CREDIT AND LOSSES AND FOLLOW THE DATA.
THAT HELPS US TO SEE THAT AND HELPS US.
LOOK AT WHAT WE NEED TO DO AND CHANGE.
AND I WAS TALKING ABOUT LOOKING FOR PATHWAYS SO WE CAN SMACK YOU TO GET PATHWAYS THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL THAT MIGHT BE MORE APPEALING TO YOUR STUDENTS AND DESIGNING SOME OF THAT.
ONE OF THE CLASSES WE'RE ADDING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL IS A NATIVE AMERICAN[INAUDIBLE] AND COAST SALISH.
UM, SPECIAL EDUCATION FOCUS AGAIN.
I GUESS. LOOKING AT SPECIAL EDUCATION, RIGHT.
WE KNOW THAT WE HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS OVER.
FOUR OF THE QUALIFYING STUDENTS WHEN THEY.
SO THAT HAS BEEN A FOCUS OF OURS FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS AND CONTINUING TO.
IT'S WORKED WITH OUR EXPERTS, SOME TEAMS LOOKING AT HOW WE CAN MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE LOOKING AT IT FROM A LENS THAT'S NOT JUST FROM OUR PERSPECTIVE, BUT HOW CAN WE SUPPORT THROUGH? AND SHOWING OUR STUDENTS TAKING ON THE LANGUAGE OR LEARNING PROGRAMS. HORIZON ONLY HAS TWO PERIODS BECAUSE WE SPLIT TEACHERS.
THE TEACHER BETWEEN THE TWO MIDDLE SCHOOLS SO PROGRESSIVE HAS TWO PERIODS AND THIS HAS THREE PERIODS LOOKING AT OUR TRACK DATE OR HOW MANY STUDENTS WERE ENROLLED IN THOSE COURSES FROM 19-20 TO TODAY.
[00:45:01]
SO I'M HERE TO TALK ABOUT HOW WE HELP TO GROW, GROW AND LOOKING AT DIFFERENT PATHWAYS THROUGH SCHOOL.SO FOR EACH OF. LOOK INTO OUR PARTICIPATION OF OUR STUDENTS AND WHO IS PARTICIPATING.
AND AGAIN, WHAT CAN WE DO THERE TO SUPPORT THAT PARTICIPATION? WE HAVE ACTUALLY A PRETTY HIGH PERCENTAGE OF OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE NATIVE THAT ARE PARTICIPATING IN DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES.
YOU HEARD THAT FROM OUR STUDENTS TODAY.
THEY'RE FEELING LIKE THEY WANT TO ENGAGE AND JOIN IN.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT'S KIND OF TIES IN WITH US AS PART OF A MEMORIAL CURRICULUM, WE INVEST IN LOOKING AT HOW DO WE SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL, GO INTO RECOGNIZING EVENTS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO OUR NATIVE AMERICAN FOLK? SO WE'VE BEEN LOOKING AT HOW DO WE TELL US ABOUT THE SEASONS AND HOW THINGS HAPPEN AS A SEASON.
HOW DO WE KIND OF TIE IN THINGS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THAT ARE RELEVANT FOR STUDENTS? AND THEN IT JUST BECOMES PART OF WHAT WE DO EVERY YEAR.
SO I'M EXCITED TO CONTINUE DEVELOPING THAT.
WE HAVE DONE A LOT OF WORK AROUND READING AND A LOT OF WORK AROUND THE LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND THE IMPORTANCE OF WORDS AND HOW WHAT THAT MEANS TO OUR LUMMI NATION COLLEAGUES AND NEIGHBORS.
SO TYING IN THOSE TWO BIG PROJECTS AND THEN HOW DO WE EXPAND THAT INTO TO TO OTHER AREAS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR? IT'S NOT JUST NOVEMBER AND AGAIN IN JANUARY.
WE CAN TIE THIS THROUGH WHEN IT BECOMES JUST WHAT WE DO.
AND, YOU KNOW, THIS IS A TOPIC ON EVERYBODY'S MIND.
AND YOU CAN SEE THAT WE SPEND APPROXIMATELY 135,000 ON PROGRAMS. AND THEN WHEN THE ALLOCATION FOR THAT FUNDING COMES FROM.
SO WE RECEIVE THIS YEAR ABOUT 167,000 FROM IMPACT AID.
AND THEN WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE GRANTED THE TRIBAL LANGUAGE GRANT, THE DIALOG MODEL THAT'S REALLY BEEN PREDOMINANTLY USED AT ELEMENTARY LEVELS AND THEN OUTSIDE OF SIX FUNDING.
EXPEND MORE THAN OUR FUNDING FOR OUR NATIVE PROGRAMS IS ALLOCATED SO THAT WE SUPPLEMENTED THROUGH BASIC EDUCATION TO MAKE UP FOR THE PROGRAMING.
AND WE HAVE SHARED ON BOTH DIETS WITH OUR [INAUDIBLE] AND CHRISTINE.
I SHARED THE NOMINATION OF EDUCATION BOARDS MEETING LAST MONTH, OUR JOINT POLICIES AND PROCEDURES.
LAST YEAR, A GROUP OF US WORKED FOR THOSE THAT DON'T KNOW.
WE CHOSE TO REMAIN IN THE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES.
NATIVE AMERICAN POLICIES AND PROCEDURES.
AND WHAT WE EXPECT TO DO AS A AS A JOINT TEAM.
AND THEN THE NAPS, ALL THE FEDERAL EXPECTATIONS AND THAT'S SIGNED OFF ON BY OUR SCHOOL BOARD AND GOES THROUGH WITH THAT IMPACT AID APPLICATION.
SO IF YOU THINK ABOUT THE GPA, KIND OF LIKE OUR PROCEDURES AND THEN THE NAPS LIKE OUR POLICIES.
THAT'S THE WAY I WOULD THINK ABOUT IT, IS HOW DO WE DO BUSINESS AND THEN WHAT DO WE DO TO DO BUSINESS? SO WE OUTLINED LAST YEAR A GROUP OF US.
I REALLY TOOK THE THE JBS AND THE NAPS AND THE LIGHTNING BECAUSE THEY USED TO BE EIGHT AND THE JBS HAD EIGHT, AND THEN THE NAPPS CHANGED TO SIX. SO WE REALIGNED IT.
OKAY. AND THEN FOR HOW WE WORK TOGETHER, WE'RE REALLY FOCUSED TAKING.
[00:50:04]
AND THEN WE REALLY HAVE TWO MEETINGS A YEAR WHERE WE DEDICATE GETTING TOGETHER, AND ONE OF THEM IS RIGHT AROUND JUNE, WHERE WE SHARE OUT HOW WE'RE PLANNING ON SPENDING OUR TITLE, OUR NATION'S FEDERAL FUNDING.AND THEN THIS MEETING WHERE WE COME BACK AND SHARE HOW WE'RE DOING AND WHAT THAT FUNDING HAS DONE TO HELP SUPPORT OUR PROGRAMS AND OUR KIDS AND WE HOW WE COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER IS REALLY DEPENDING ON WHAT ALL OF YOU WANT.
SO JANNA AND I AND THE STEERING AND COMMUNICATION AND THEN WITH DR.
TOM AS WELL, IT'S KIND OF KEEPING THAT LINE OF COMMUNICATION OPEN AS TO HOW WE CAN MEET YOUR NEEDS.
BUT AGAIN, IF THERE'S SOMETHING WE CAN DO BETTER, PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO LET US.
JUST SOME OF OUR FUTURE WORKS.
I MENTIONED WE WANT TO EXPAND OUR SDI CURRICULUM AND CONTINUE TO LOOK AT BEING CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE AND MAKING SURE THAT OUR IS PROBLEM FOR OUR STUDENTS. EXPLORING HIGH SCHOOL PATHWAYS CAN HELP CREATE THAT SENSE OF BELONGING AND FOCUSING ON THOSE OUTCOMES THAT INCLUDE ALL OF THE CHILD.
SO AS FAR AS IF THERE AREN'T ANY QUESTIONS AND THEY DIDN'T DO ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION ON THE POINT, I JUST DID THINK THE QUESTION WITH THE SUCCESS OF THE MORNING GATHERING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL IS THE THOUGHT OF BRINGING MORE GATHERINGS TO THE ELEMENTARY OR LEVEL SCHOOLS. GREAT QUESTION.
AND WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO IS OUR NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENT LIAISON AT THE MANY SCHOOLS, HEATHER HAD THE GOOD AS WELL. SO I DON'T KNOW THAT WE CAN MAYBE USE OUR STUDENTS TO DO THAT.
WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO HEAR FROM LOVING PARENTS ABOUT HOW THEY FEEL OR PROGRAMED TO GO INTO SPORTS? WHERE DO WE HEAR THEIR VOICES? ASIDE FROM JUST REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING, KNOW, ARE THERE OTHER VENUES WHERE YOU CAN HEAR PARENTS AND FAMILIES TALKING ABOUT HOW THEIR KIDS ARE DOING IN SCHOOL, WHAT THEY LIKE, WHAT THEY DON'T LIKE? ARE YOU ASKING ME? AND I CAN ANSWER A LITTLE BIT JUST FROM MY EXPERIENCE SINCE JULY AND JUDY AND I'VE TALKED ABOUT IT AND TALKED ABOUT IT WITH HEATHER AND JESSICA AND I HAVE A MEETING WITH SOME FAMILIES.
I'VE BEEN MEETING WITH SOME OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
I'VE BEEN MEETING WITH OUR PRINCIPALS WHO THAT'S ONE PIECE IS ASKING THEM, WHAT DOES OUTREACH LOOK LIKE? IT IS ONE AREA THAT I THINK IN REGARDS TO OUR NATIVE AMERICAN FAMILIES, DEFINITELY, BUT ALL FAMILIES, HOW ARE WE CREATING SPACE SO THEY CAN COME? AND I THINK PART OF IT IS, IS WE HAVE A SYSTEM CURRENTLY SET UP WHERE WE ASK PEOPLE TO COME TO US AND WE NEED TO FIND A WAY TO CREATE SPACE THAT WE GO TO THEM.
AND SO THAT HASN'T ALWAYS BEEN THE CULTURE.
I THINK OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IS CURRENTLY SET UP CONFERENCES.
THAT'S PART OF THE WORK OF THE FRC THAT AS THEY GO OUT AND THEY LISTEN AND LEARN.
I THINK OFTENTIMES WE MAKE IT SO FORMAL THAT IT'S NOT COMFORTABLE.
SO THAT'S THAT'S RISEN TO AN AREA OF FOCUS IN MY ENTRY POINT DATA THAT WE'LL TALK ABOUT LATER.
AND I DO WONDER TO OUR PRINCIPALS IF THEY WOULD HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD ON THAT.
[00:55:05]
AND THAT IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ANY STEP OR ANY PARENT TO COME AND SHARE SUCCESSES OR CHALLENGES OR CONCERNS AND THOSE TYPES OF THINGS.SO THAT IS THAT IS ALSO A MONTHLY OPPORTUNITY FOR FOLKS.
AND AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, THE STAFF AND I, WE FED SOME PRETTY GOOD SUCCESS IN THE SPRING AND THEN AGAIN IN THE FALL WITH THE FAMILY NIGHTS THAT WE THAT WE HOST, THAT WE REALLY NEED TO COMMUNICATE COMMUNICATE THE AGENDA FOR THEM FOR THE NIGHT, THE ACTIVITIES THAT ARE GOING TO BE THERE FOR THE NIGHT.
WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S IT'S GOING TO BRING IT'S GOING TO BRING PEOPLE IN.
OUR MOST RECENT, MOST RECENT FAMILY NIGHT, WE WERE REALLY, REALLY UPFRONT IS WE WANT WE WANT YOU TO COME AND COME AND JAM OUT IF YOUR FAMILY HAS A SONG THAT YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE.
THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO.
WE HAVE MEETING FOR THE YOUNG, FOR THE YOUNG KIDS.
WE'RE GOING TO MAKE EARRINGS AND NECKLACES AND GIVE A BINGO.
BUT IT'S BEEN JUST MAKING MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE OFFERING A NIGHT THAT IS GOING TO HAVE A LITTLE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT WHAT WE'RE DOING ACADEMICALLY.
BUT IT'S ALSO A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO JUST ENJOY BRINGING THE BAND TOGETHER.
AND I THINK WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HOW DO WE REACH OUT TO FAMILIES AND HOW DO WE CREATE A PLATFORM OR AN AVENUE IN WHICH FAMILIES HAVE A HAVE THAT PATHWAY TO CREATE THAT TWO WAY DIALOG.
WE NEED TO BE MINDFUL AND OPEN TO WAYS THOSE GROUPS AND CULTURAL.
HOW DO WE COMMUNICATE AS A CULTURE? RIGHT. SO IF YOU THINK ABOUT WHAT THAT MIGHT LOOK LIKE FOR ELIMINATION, WE COME FROM AN ORAL TRADITION.
AND SO THOSE ARE VERY MUCH FACE TO FACE CONVERSATIONS.
AND I THINK THE OTHER PART OF THAT, TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, IS HOW DO WE GET LUMBEE FAMILIES TO TALK TO US ABOUT HOW THEIR KIDS ARE DOING IN SCHOOL? WE ALSO HAVE TO BE MINDFUL OF THE HISTORY AND DOING THINGS THAT ARE INTENTIONALLY CREATING WAYS TO HELP MEN THAT RELATIONSHIPS.
SO THAT THAT THAT FEELS COMFORTABLE.
AND THAT WHEN WE ARE IN SETTINGS LIKE THIS OR WE'RE IN SETTINGS WITH ELIMINATION OR WE'RE JUST WORKING DAY TO DAY IN A CASE BY CASE WITH OUR KIDS THAT WERE HERE TODAY, THAT OUR ADMINISTRATORS AND OUR TEACHERS ARE BEING MINDFUL THAT WE'RE DOING THINGS TO INTENTIONALLY, INTENTIONALLY REBUILD THAT RELATIONSHIP.
AND AS WE DO THOSE THINGS, PEOPLE WILL COME TO US.
THEY WILL WANT TO SHARE THEIR INFORMATION.
THEY WILL WANT TO COME AND TALK TO THEIR KIDS.
BUT I THINK WE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THE CULTURES OF ALL OF OUR STUDENTS IN OUR SCHOOL, NOT JUST THE STUDENTS, NOT JUST THE NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENTS OR HISPANIC FAMILIES HAVE A CERTAIN WAY OF COMMUNICATING.
OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN FAMILIES HAVE A CERTAIN WAY OF COMMUNICATING.
JUST KNOWING THAT WHATEVER PLATFORM YOURS OR YOURS OR YOURS WORKS FOR YOU MIGHT NOT WORK FOR ME.
DO WE HAVE ANY CONVERSATION WE NEED TO HAVE IN REGARDS TO THE APPS OR THE APPS OR HAS THAT ALL BEEN UNDER YOUR SIGN? YOUR SIGN OFF IS IN OUR VIDEO SCHOOL.
OKAY. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE EVERYTHING WE NEED YOU TO HEAR.
OUR STUDENTS, I THINK, ARE STILL MASERATI, WHICH IS GOOD.
THIS IS GOOD. I JUST I WANT TO THANK OUR STAFF AND OUR STUDENTS FOR COMING TONIGHT.
AND I HAD THE HONOR OF GOING AND GETTING TO PARTICIPATE IN MORNING GATHERING.
AND IF YOU HAVE NOT, I WOULD HIGHLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
IT'S A GIFT TO WATCH OUR STUDENTS SHINE.
IT'S A PRIVILEGE AND AN HONOR TO WATCH THAT TAKE PLACE.
[01:00:03]
AND I WILL ECHO WHAT I'VE SEEN EVEN IN MY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.THE LEADERSHIP CONTINUES TO GROW, AND SO I JUST WANT TO HONOR THAT.
OUR STAFF IS CREATING A SPACE FOR OUR STUDENTS TO FIND THEIR OWN VOICE.
AND LIKE HEATHER SAID, WE'RE I THINK WE'RE DOING A BETTER JOB WITH OUR STUDENTS LISTENING.
AND IT'S IT'S AN AREA THAT WE HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO.
WE'RE GOING TO GET THERE. BUT AT LEAST IT'S THE CONVERSATION WE'RE BEGINNING TO HAVE.
